Root EVO slow tether

Thanks for the quick replies! I got Ad Free, reverted, then reported and it made a major difference! Instead of taking 4-5 minutes to load this page, it took about a minute, which is still slower than before, but I can live with it.

I will try to find the resyncing option and post my results.

I am also going to try tendering on 4G as soon as I get back into 4G coverage.

Thanks!
Dusty

Make sure you reboot after you revert your hosts too, im sure you did but just to be safe. And yeah let us know how it goes with the 4g later, hopefully you see an improvement!

Edit: that option you are looking for is under settings>system updates>update profile

OK, after installing Myn's, Ad Free and reverting, my download speeds to my EVO are significantally slower than before. I am running about 1.5Mbps down and 700K up, even in strong 4G coverage.

When tethering to my iPad, I am getting 340K down and 1.1M up. I have rebooted both devices multiple timrs, with no difference.

I have tried the stock Sprint WiFi app, and as you probably know, it reverts the phone to 3G.

Is there anything else that you guys can think of that I can try? I am open for any suggestions.

Thanks for all of your help.

Dusty

Edit: I have done the update profile option as well.

Awesome!! What was it that you figured out?

Overclocking varies from phone to phone actually, its an interesting little thing.
There is an app called set cpu, and you pretty much have to do a trial and error to see what speed you can over clock at. Most phones can only get to about 115xxx... anything over that (or that itself) will cause a reboot.
Underneath that slider bar is an option that says "set on boot" which causes your phone to start up on the overclocking you choose every time you start it up, so it you choose something that causes your phone to be unstable, then you will get stuck in aboot loop. So do not check that button until you get comfortable with what your phone can handle, or you will be screwed into a bootloop.

Here is a guide on how to set up SetCPU. Also, if you download the apk from this thread on xda, you can get if free. Or, go to the market and pay for it to donate to the developer.
(i have version 2.10 and it works good, i cant speak for 2.11 but im sure it is fine)

That reminds me I need to fix the images in that SetCPU guide. Will take care of that soon. Hopefully get it stickied.

OK, so Myn's was giving me a hard time, so I decided to switch to Koni's Elite II, and so far so good. It is blazing fast compared to Stock and Myn's (in my experience, anyways) I am impressed! I also purchased SetCPU from the app market, and although I don't know what I am doing, it says it is maxed out at 998400. Is that good? I performed a "stress test" for four minutes and it found zero errors.

Again...hopefully I can test the tether in a 4G area tomorrow with this new ROM. I'm crossing my fingers!

Is there any kernels or anything that you guys suggest using with Koni's Elite II?

Thanks!

Dusty

Great. Im not a huge pro on setcpu, but mine was maxed out at 998 when i was on the stock kernel. A custom kernel will give you options to overclock more.

To be honest, i use either the kernel that came with the rom, or netarchys kernels. Netarchy seemed to be the best for me when i first started, so i continue to use them. Give his page a read over so you know a little more. His page is here:
[GPL][Kernel]netarchy-toastmod, Stable: 4.3.1 Beta: 4.3.2 - xda-developers

4.3.1 is the stable version available, and 4.3.2 is the newest beta.
Then you have to choose between CFS and BFS versions. CFS usually gives better overall battery life. But it varies for people.

Then lastly, you have HAVS and noHAVS. More info on BFS vs. CFS and HAVS can be found here:

Ok, first off I wanted to say that I REALLY like Koni's Elite!

But...I am having a problem with it losing it's internet connection. Nothing will solve the problem except for a RoM reload. At first I thought that it was the ToastMod that I installed, so I didnt install it the last two times I reloaded Koni's.

It only happens every 2-3 days. What will happen is that it just won't load any webpages or Android market or anything, no matter if iI am in 3G, 4G or WiFi.

I have rebooted, performed a battery pull, cleared cache, updated profile, andeverything else that I could think of.

Again, this only happens every few days. More of an annoyance than anything, as it only takes ten minutes to teload the ROM including wiping delvikdelvik, etc.

Any help wwould be appreciated.

Yes I have. Koni's Elite comes with AdFree. It does help with browser speed but the problem that I am experiencing now is that the phone is totally losing it's internet connection.

Unfortunatelyi haven't figured anything out yet. I've tried different ROMs, different WiFi tether versions, etc. But it seems like its is metered at around 512kbps. Kind of disappointing.

That is really odd.
Have you tried to tether a laptop on the 4g and do a speed test?
I just wonder if there is something between the evo and ipad that is causing a hiccup.

Its kinda hard to talk to sprint about this problem since you arent paying for it...lol but we have done everything i can imagine to try and fix it.

If you get a chance to run a speedtest from a computer while hooked up to 4g, let me know

I have tried it with my laptop and I got the same results. Do you have this problem as well? Unfortunately, a lot of the people that I have discussed this with do not have 4G coverage. I guess I could try another ROM, although it is the same with Myn's and Koni's Elite

Dusty

Yeah, if you dont get it on stock, Myns, Konis, you probably wont get it on any rom..

And when i use tethering on 4g, i get the 4g speed on my laptop. Ive never had a problem.

The only other thing i would try if i were you is to unroot, and completely go back to stock, and then pay for a day or two of sprints wireless tethering (i think they prorate it for you so you only pay for it until you cancel it)
See if you can get 4g speeds through the paid tethering app that day.
If not, its a problem on the phones end, so take it into sprint and see what they can do.

If 4g works, then something just isnt working right, then you can root it, and start fresh with a new rom, like Konis, and see what happens.

Its a bit of work and will take some time, but it will help rule out what the problem is.

Sprint's tether automatically turns the 4G antenna off. If I revert it back to stock, will they be able to tell that I rooted it? I don't even know if It's still under warranty. I think I purchased it in early Feb.

Thanks!

Dusty

I know the hacked version of sprints tethering usually wont work on 4g, but if you pay for it i think it does. Might need to double check on that though. (ive never paid and tried it :p )

If you unroot it, and it is back to stock, and you have S-OFF, (and they dont look through your sd card) then no, they will have no idea it was rooted.

If you bought it from sprint, did you put insurance on it? There is the loss/stolen insurance, but do you have the equipment protection insurance? (i think thats what it is, it covers everything when you bring it in for repairs, instead of sprint charging you to work on/replace it) Just also double check you have that, or itll be about 35 bucks for them to fix the problem, if thats what needs to be done.

I'm also having this issue and have tried all of the same steps as the OP and still haven't had any luck. I get about 4-5Mbps on 4G on the phone but the second I tether to my laptop or iPad I only get about .75Mbps.

Really hoping for a solution soon!

The only thing that I can think of is to try a different ROM, although I don't really know what to look for in a ROM. Surfologist suggested Myn's Warm two-point-two and Koni's Elite 2 and they work well, and I like them a lot, but the tether is still slow.

Does anyone think that maybe the newer phones are only able to tether at 3G speeds? My phone isn't REALLY new, but its only about two months old.

I'm currently running Myn's and Wireless Tether 2.0.7 and even with the fixroute.sh it deosn't work correctly. I tried other versions of Wireless Tether as well...no dice. My EVO is a launch model...HW Rev. 002.

I also made a topic about this at XDA - hoping to get some responses. [Q] 4G Wireless Tethering Slow - xda-developers

For those of you who are experiencing slow 4g tethering, you may or may not have discovered a solution. But I was in the same boat as you and found something that worked for me. Not sure if it will work with iPad because of the internet tools that need to be altered but I don't know how ipads works, so check this out. 4G Tethering over WiFi Speed Issues? - xda-developers I hope you have the same success I did.
