Evo V 4g > Triumph?

Banished Angel

Android Enthusiast
I currently have a Motorola Triumph running CM7.2 and i'm considering upgrading to the Evo V 4g due to the obvious advantages of a dual core and the fact that it's 20% off ($240) on the Virgin website right now. Before I pull the trigger i'd just like some feedback from people who own the phone. Especially anyone who came from a Triumph, but all feedback is appreciated. What issues, if any, come with this phone? I plan on rooting it and throwing a custom ROM on, so what ROM is recommended? I'd also get an aftermarket battery if I get this phone, so any recommendations there?

the first thing youll notice, is that the phone actually works.

  • touch screen isnt shoddy so you can actually play games
  • camera doesnt have a green blob
  • back cover doesnt randomly come off
  • screen does not get dust under it within 48 hours of owning it
  • capacitive buttons dont become unresponsive
  • speaker doesnt sound terrible, neither does the mic or ear piece
  • it doesnt suck.

i used the triumph when it came out i got lucky and got a good one. i love the 3vo the triumph could not compare. there are plenty roms to run if you downgrade h boot. the phone does have a radio problem that annoys some while dormant to others

i love my evo, except for 2 main reasons:

The radio interface resource shortage error, which is when i hate it. basically you have to text yourself constantly to make sure your phone calls and text messaging are still working. Else, the phone is pretty much a wifi device. there's plenty of discussion on this error. i'm pretty sure virgin mobile is never going to address this issue. flashing a new radio kinda helps but it still occurs.

Also if you use the camera often, then you should avoid the cyanogenmod9 rom. the stock ICS camera cannot compare to HTC's stock camera app; photos are noticeably blurry on cm9, but crsip and sharp on stock htc camera, despite any changes to camera settings. Otherwise, cm9 is probably a quick beast and you will love it.

Okay i'm liking everything except this radio problem.. How common is it? Does it occur daily? And are there any known workarounds?

there is a a couple workarounds if you are s-on still and dont plan to s-off try this http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-v-4g/577024-radio-interface-resource-shortage-fix.html#post4616429
this phone works better if u s-off too :D so if you do end up doing s-off look at this thread for radios http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-a...ng-turning-your-phone-into-evo-3d-thread.html
and i also have a thread for radios from the 3D you can use if you are s-off
http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/604546-link-radios-s-off.html

So noob question time. What's s-on and s-off? Assuming I choose s-off due to your recommendation and do the Evo 3d fix, does the radio problem still occur?

S-On prohibits flashing anything to the boot partition or firmware.
S-Off unlocks everything.

The "fix everything" sticky fixes the radio issues but requires S-off, which is not nearly as scary as it sounds and allows a wider range of roms.

So with S-Off, the fix everything "fixes", and a custom ROM this phone is 100% solid then? I'm very familiar with rooting and such so I don't imagine i'll have much trouble modding this phone. From a quick glance at the All Things Root section Mobster Rom looks promising. Unless someone can recommend a better ROM? And thank you for all the replies. I'm officially sold on this phone and will be joining this community soon.

Side note: Still looking for advice on an aftermarket battery

EDIT: Ordered from Radioshack ($229 + S&H). Will have phone by the end of the week. Thanks for all the feedback!

It's a VERY solid phone once you do that.
It's what you would expect from a nice, high end phone.

I hate the idea that you have to root, rom and flash to make it work right, I bitch about the Triumph for that very thing. However there is a big difference, not only do we expect a fix from HTC any time (because it IS a software issue), the fixes we have are not workarounds, they are proper fixes.

As for solid roms... Mobster, Midnight, and Harmonia seem to be the big three. I would try all three and see what you like.

One great thing about this phone is accessories, and the fact that they are CHEAP.

Batteries:
Personally, I love Anker. Get a 10-20% without a thicker phone for under $20. This gives you a little extra juice for daily use and a spare battery for when you need it. They also sell higher capacity ones, but Seido may be a better option as they make docks that are compatible with their extended battery and case if you want one. OEM docks cannot handle cases or extended batteries, Seido stuff can. Personally, I only run a cheap screen protector (Ebay generics).

One other thing I recommend, get a dock (I have the OEM), just drop it in, and it charges. No fiddling with cords (who needs a Powermat?) and it gives you a nice bedside alarm clock. This is the second phone I have had with a dock and I will probably never own another phone without one, I ordered this dock almost as soon as I got the phone because they are just so convenient. I even went so far as to buy my mom a dock for her One V for the same reasons. You can get them for about $10 on Ebay, you won't regret it.

There is also car docks, I haven't tried other quality ones like Seido, but
the OEM is VERY nice and I would guess the others are too. The generics stink as always. OEM's can be had for about $12 and come with a nice quality car charging kit. Another thing you will want.

Ha ha ha you have never experienced true rooting till you have had an HTC (it's a bit*h and a half (but I've done it to more than one HTC) so no more one click like the triumph and s-off didn't give you a 100% solid rom but it will get you around a 95 because so far no cm9 or cm10 rom has 3d (my favorite feature that needs to be there so you don't look stupid with two cameras on the back of your phone) and some time have problems with mms

Yeah I skimmed the root process for this phone and it sounds like i'll have a fun old time.. I found this kit on ebay and figured it's a good all in one:

for. HTC EVO 3D /EVO V 4G BLACK* GEL CASE+Battery+USB CORD+CHARGER | eBay

The only thing that annoys me is that my phone will get here Friday, but the case, screen protector, and extra batteries won't get here until a week from Friday. That's what I get for ordering from China lol. Oh well, I'll just have to make sure to not drop or scratch my phone for a week.

From what I gather Mobstergunz ROM is know for being Senseless, Midnight is known for being overclocked and fast, and Harmonia is known for stability? Are there any Cyanogenmod ROMs being actively developed? I've grown quite fond of Cyanogenmod on my Triumph.

CM9 is being developed. Same with CM10. only thing is, you need s off for both. We should see a CM10 build on these forums soon.
XDA already has a AOKP CM10 that is as functional as CM9 was for the triumph (No camera, missing some features but still good).

You should expect the 3D feature to be like HDMI was on the triumph, you won't see it on ROMs that aren't based off the stock ROM.

MMS also doesn't work on ROMs that aren't stock based.

Jmz is actively developing cm9 and is looking into cm10.

As for the s-off procedure, it seems like a scary process but it's not as dangerous as it sounds. You basically brick the phone to get s-off, but it's a soft brick which means even if the process fails its recoverable.
I'm pretty sure nobody has actually bricked this phone permenantly.

I did the hboot downgrade that is in Leslie Anne s sticky thread and the phone is solid now. I live it

That was the worst part , not knowing if the phones working , but that signal notification app helps that, as long as its not reading -120 the phones working
I make sure i take a glance thats lts not locked at -120 when I set it down, easier than texting and calling yourself

The lack of 3D doesn't bother me. I may be wowed by it once I get the phone, but it kind of seems like a gimmick to me. I wasn't impressed by the 3DS and i've read it's the same technology. I'm positive Mobster Rom will hold me until CM10 gets the camera and MMS sorted out. Now I just hope rooting and getting S-Off doesn't give me too much of a headache.

seemed like more work than it is. dive in on night when youre bored, and youll have your phone unlocked, rooted, s-off, with a new rom and radio issues fixed.

as for the 3d. i have found a couple uses, but over all just a gimmick yeah.

GoPro 3D: Highlight Reel 2011 - YouTube

that is the best video ive seen that i can pull out and show off the feature to others though lol.

I've got 2 extra batteries, a battery charger, the HTC dock, a screen protector, an awesome looking case, and a 32GB Micro SD card on the way with the phone. If ever there was an accessory missing it is not here. Root process from hell and radio problem? Bring it!

dont use the 32gb card during the s-off process

Newb question.

You guys keep referencing "docks" and not having to mess with cables, wont any doc still require you to mate the mini_USB port to the port on the doc? In other words you still have to plug in to charge but as its a dock, you wont have the flexibility of a cable to allow an easier plug into.

Or am I missing something?

Thanks all.

Using a dock just requires that you basically drop the phone right into it, that's why my dock has a removable insert for when you use a case. No alignment required. As to the sd card issue, yes definitely use a spare card while performing the wire trick, if you time it incorrectly you can wipe the card.

Thank you. I thought for a second the EVO could do the 'passive' charging thing where no connection is needed :)
