Help Evo won't charge or turn on

OK The same thing just happened to me .
I'm at work on a friday alone on phone duty listing to streaming music on my evo that is pluged into my computers usb. Suddenly the music stops. I thought it was a data issue with the stream. I was going to change the channel an saw my phone was off. My charge light was not lit but I was still plugged into the computers USB. several attemps to turn it on with little more than a failed attempt to start up led me to this forum. Having read about the battery being suspect I pulled it out and it was warm. I sprayed it with instant chill and tried again still with failed attemps. I pulled the battery and tested it with a voltage tester. There are 4 contacts on the battery. the outside one closest to the edge is a positive and the other 3 are negative. I tested 2.6 volts offthe positive to each of the 3 negatives. I pulled the test leads out of the tester and used alligator clips to connect them to a 12 vold alarm battery . Holding the positive lead to the positive connection on the battery , I quickly tapped each of the negative contacts a few times with the negative lead from the 12 volt battery. ONLY FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND TAP EACH TIME. After repeating this a few times I rechecked the battery voltage again and fount the battery had come back up to 2.9 volts!!! I repeated this procedure again and rechecked my battery at 3.1 volts. Not wanting to press my luck further , I placed the battery back into the phone and it started to charge right away. I turned it on after about 3 minutes without issue. 10 minutes later I am at 18% no that's 19% and climbing. Hope this helps others with this issue. Glad I found this forum, otherwise I would not have had any idea where to start. Warning!!! DO NOT HOLD LEADS TO THE BATTERY! , ONLY A QUICK TAP TO THE CONTACTS TO BUMP IT. OTHERWISE YOU MIGHT CAUSE THE BATTERY TO GASS OUT AND POP!! DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING AS I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR BATTERY OR PHONE ! Those with an understanding of how batteries and chargers work , or anyone who has properly jumpstarted a car will understand exactly what I just did.
Oh BTW 28% and climbing!

As a follow up to my last post.
Even plugged in and charging, you can have an app that drains your battery if your using power faster than your putting it in ! Check your battery when running apps every so often to see if it's holding it's charge or loosing ground. especially new apps that you have no way of knowing what they use power wise. I don't know if my phone did not give me a notification about the battery because it was already plugged in,or If I just did not hear it over the music. :-)

seeing as there wasn't an answer, posted...i'll say this, my phone had this problem yesterday, and i took it down to the sprint store. they wiped the phone clean, all contacts were backed up automatically using the gmail account on my phone. sooooooo-
you'll need to take this to your sprint store, and they will wipe it clean. it IS NOT your battery.

I have had my Evo 4G for nearly a year now and I've never had battery issues until tonight, other than when plugged into my laptop rather than a wall-charger. The thing about using the USB on your laptop is basically you're using a lot of battery power from it, its already drained and then you plug your phone in in an attempt to obtain more power from the laptop; Sometimes there isnt ENOUGH power and the phone simply cannot charge. Especially if you have something running on both devices.

Tonight, My phone woouldnt even charge by wall. I did the freezer trick and IT WORKED. I was SO excited :)

i used the reboot (power and volume down) and it turned back on but wont charge now

that just takes you to the bootloader. so can you boot up from there? if so all you really did was a soft reboot by powering off. the bootloader will not really do anything unless you select clear storage which will do a factory reset for you.

Fixed my EVO blinking amber/orange light by changing the charging cable; I saw this suggestion on another post. My Evo would not turn on or charge whether plugged into my computer via USB or into a wall outlet. After plugging in with an extra charging cable I had, the amber/orange light blinked a few times and then became solid. At this point my Evo was able to be powered on.

Same exact thing happened to me, it was at about 5% battery, except for me i saw a message, and all i saw was 'battery' in the message, then i got a text, i tried to close it but my battery died. Won't turn on, dosen't charge either, no notification.

I really wish i saw what that message said, it was pretty long too.

i had a notification a battery pop up too it was at like 7% it said that the charger was not supplying enough power to charge the battery, and to switch to a different charger

I think I've figured it out!! I was ready to give up the phone :(, but now I feel a little more hopeful :). I have been having this problem off and on for weeks and completely frustrated!! So after reading several threads on many sites on this subject, I decided to really check out my phone. I tried several different ways of charging it, using different ports.....thinking it wasn't charging. Switched out batteries....thinking it was the battery. So I took off the back cover just the one over the battery and just starting looking to see if anything looked off. I'm not super techno savvy, but learning and have to admit this phone is pretty intimidating when it comes to that. I assumed it had to be a software problem. I am however a bit electronic savvy...so, I decided to look at the basics first....with my phone it seems to have come down to a simple power button sticking. I noticed that there was an ever so slight gap where the outer casing comes together on the end where the headphone and power button is. It looks as if the screw just needs to be tightened. It's a big enough gap that dust particals and skin oils can get in there. I then took my fingernail and gave the power button a deep hard push....tadah!...my phone popped on. It's been two days and is still doing okay....It's still sticking, however it is apparent it is the button, you can tell because it isn't out as much....this phone is so sleek, you can hardly notice it. I'm sure once I take the back case off and clean it, it's going to work fine. You do need a very, very small star tool for the screws....I think I have one around here from my blackberry, when the ball would stick and get dirty. For now I'm keeping my rubber/plastic otterbox protective case off, because that prevents the button from working all together. Anyhow, my assumption as to why it appears to be a battery/charging lssue is because....if you are like me I have my screen set to shut down after a couple of minutes to save on battery life, so as you know when you pick it up to use it, you hit the power button to bring up the screen. Well when it doesn't come up, you assume it's dead, so you plug it in, which will make the screen pop on and off without using the power button...so that gives the impression it's a power issue. The problem with switching out the battery or popping out the battery to reboot is this....if your battery is to low and switch out the battery, you have to use your power button to turn it back on and/or you don't have enough battery to reboot fast enough so the screen powers off before it's done, giving the impression again that it is a battery problem. When you reboot with a fully charged battery it will pop back on quickly, again giving the impression it's a battery problem. Also, having said all this, when I did first get my phone the charging cord that came with it was crap and quit making connection within the first month, they replaced it with a more durable cord. That was apparent though, because it showed it wasn't charging. I hope this helps someone!

Day 1: Noticed phone wasn't charging all the way to full. Charge light on, charge symbol flashing on phone, but when unplugged, no charge added.

Day 2: Woke up and phone was dead. Would not turn on. Took it to Sprint. They could not find the problem. They thought maybe it was a bad battery. Just bought a new one, and the same thing is happening.

It's not day 3 yet, but my assumption is that it will end up like day 2.

Can someone from Android pull their head out and give us a real answer..we know it's not the battery or the port...need a real answer here.

HTCEVOEDDIE,

I am having the exact same problem and have an extra battery so have determined it is not the battery. Did you recently update the new HTC software from Sprint? I did the other day and started having this problem so think they may be connected. This is miserable so if anyone has a fix for this please let me know. Thanks for your assistance.

My Evo just quit. It won't charge and no lights come on indicating that the phone is charging. I tried the boot(volume down and power button) to no avail. I realize that the phone was nearly totally discharged and it was rather warm this morning. Seems like the other problems that are in this thread.

i did that too..mine quit about 2 hours ago...i took it apart and cleaned it all with a tooth brush...that worked last time..buit this time it aint doin nothing...i tried 2 other batteries that i have but that didnt work either..i tried the boot loader but it wont even bring that up either...but the difference is my phone said it had about 25% battery left...i set it in my car came bact 2 minutes later and it was off...and wouldnt recgonise a charger or anything

EXACT SAME thing happened with mine. did you get it to work?

My EVO issue is similar in that it won't charge from anywhere except the USB from my computer. I have tried 3 wall chargers, including the USB wall adapter that came with the phone, to no avail. The phone wouldn't power up at all. This morning I plugged it into my laptop and it went from 0 charge to 100% in about 5 minutes and is now working except for the wall charge issue. Pretty frustrating.

This is the same exact thing mines is doing! I've tried every charger, and nothing! The only one that works is the USB for my pc. But the phone doesn't pick it up easily I have to hold the plug in tight for a few seconds for it to pick it up.

This is very frustrating... It all started this week too, and I've not dropped the phone or anything!

From what I can tell HTC just makes cheap stuff then they swindle everyone into buying their stuff. If not for that, they'd not have a company. If I wanted crud I'd buy Samsung. At least then I'd have a pretty name on it!

Seriously though, my HTC Evo 4G wasn't even 3 months old when it went bonkers. I had tried to root it, but it didn't take and I successfully did a Factory Reset. So it's not the Software what so ever. At least not the normal stuff. Here is the problem that arose: I would plug it in to charge, it would flash as if it were a really low battery for about 5 to 20 minutes and then it would stop attempting to charge.

I did what the other guy did and used another device to charge the battery. The problem I now have is that while I can use other devices (In this case my *much* older HTC Hero.) to charge the battery, the phone itself won't charge the original battery or the HTC Hero battery which I put it. The light will turn orange is if it's charging it, but when I check the charge level it's either the same or went down depending upon use. So essentially, it's telling a lie to me. It will claim it's charging it while not actually doing so.

I've been very careful with the phone. It's even had an Otter Box since I first got it. I've never let the battery get too low, never Bump Charged it, or anything else like that. It's quite ironic that I treated the HTC Evo 4G like gold and it died on me; meanwhile, my HTC Hero is finicky at best but I've treated it like crap and it still works. For the most part. The data sucks on it, but it's a First Gen that I've literally (In an Otter Box.) thrown across the room when angry. Go figures, right?!

So my questions are these: Is it a broken pathway, faulty basic programming, or what? Is this something I can fix myself, have to get Sprint to replace it, or will HTC replace it? (I only say replace because they seem to just give you one they've already fixed so you don't have to wait for your exact phone.)

P.S. If you ask me, it's a lot like the Xbox 360 solder problems. It's cheap and weak, so it falls apart easily. The problems I've seen with the HTC Evo seem to all be about the solder failing for the Power Button, and (So it would at least appear.) the charging port. I think maybe where it gets hot it's just enough for the solder to come undone. Then that causes other problems that arise. We (the consumer) shouldn't have to fix something as soon as we get it because the original company makes poor decisions. At least not at this price point...

Welcome to the Forums! :D:D

Personally, I think HTC has great build quality. These EVO's just keep going.

What do you mean when you say you tried to root the phone but it didnt take?

Do you have insurance?

I love my Evo but it has caused a ton of problems it crashed once and was repeating the 4g turn on non stop. I had to factory reset the phone, lost everything but what was saved on the card. now it wont charge. the red light comes on and it recognizes the charger but the batter doesn't hold the charge. and it keeps turning off randomly and not turning back on at all. I love evry thing about the Evo but t seems like its got some bugs to work out. I take great care of my phone i don't over charge or over heat the battery. I don't play a ton of games on it. I just don't understand why it keeps bugging out every few months. the Sprint store says a new battery will cost $40 not a big deal but I'm reluctant to spend it without any reassurance that it wont just keep happening. I don't think I should have to keep paying $40 every time this happens.

I have a Sprint-branded HTC EVO V 4G (REbranded 3D) on VM. I bought it the first day they were released on VM. For the last 7 months the phone worked flawlessly. I rooted and flashed a stock rom. Phone continued to work fine. No changes in the battery life or performance.

Last night, i was watching netflix on my phone when the screen dimmed like lights would when the power is about to go out. The phone then turned off without shutting down. I was concerned right away due to the flickering of the screen brightness.

I attempted to reboot and the four softkeys lit up but after about 10 seconds they turned off and the phone did nothing. It did not respond to charging last night. I swapped batteries with my wife's EVO V (same phone) and the phone did nothing but the same thing.

Today I went to RadioShack and bought another one since I needed a phone and they were on sale. I brought it home and after some tinkering this is what I found:

I used a volt meter on the battery from the failed EVO (I knew it was 50% charged when it shut off) and it read 0.000V on the meter.

I checked the volts on my new Evo's battery and it was 4.04V and put it in the malfunctioning phone. Nothing happened except the softkeys turning on. I pulled the new battery and checked the voltage and it had dropped to 3.1v while being in the old phone only momentarily.

I put the old (0.0v) in my new phone and charged it and then checked the voltage after 10 minutes and it registered 2.9Vs BUT would not boot u my new phone even while on charge.

So it appears to me that the charging/circuit system in the old phone went bad and may be shorted since it drains the battery almost instantly.

hmmmmm interesting.

and just an fyi there is a HTC EVO V 4G - Android Forums......if you like i can create a thread and move this post over there so that others with the same phone can be aware of this issue.
