Help Excessive Battery Drain (Even On Standby)

Looking at Smoda widget and it says it has access to phone calls and can modify phone state/network without user's knowledge! Is this something to worry about?

Also looked at apps Juice Defender and Green Power. Both have mixed reviews. Any advice is appreciated.

I used Juice Defender and had problems connecting to 3g, I have no such issues with Green Power. I just started using the Smoda widget recently so I will keep an eye out and see if it does actually make any other changes.

Guess complaining helps a bit. Yesterday and today were a good bit better. I'm currently on track for something like 30+ hours based on current readings. Gallery is actually sitting at the top of my battery usage list, even though it's not currently running and I haven't done anything out of the ordinary with the phone today.

On a whim I went through my settings yesterday and I did notice I still had a pop3 account set to check email every 5 minutes. I haven't actually received any email on the account (I set it up just for testing the first day I had it), so I kind of find it hard to believe it would make *that* much of a difference, but who knows...

The Data Enabler Widget is the only one I found that could truly enable/disable the 3G connection.

It shows the explanation that for security purposes Android does not allow applications access the 3D data enable/disable switch which explains why there are so many applications that fail to do it.

The widget is simply a shortcut to the Data Enabled check mark in the Settings menu and it works.

My battery drained again last night. I checked some settings and noticed that "Background Data" was turned on, not sure why. I just downloaded Data Enabler Widget. Is it accurate to say that it doesn't matter whether "3g" appears in the Status Bar? Even if it's not there it could still be active? I'm also confused about "Where". When that's turned on I don't see anything new in the Status Bar, like GPS, 3g; so how is it draining power in the background? Does hitting the Back button or Home button turn "Where" off? I put the "Power" widget on the home screen and assume it actually turns the WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS on and off; but have to use the Data Enabler Widget (which I just added) to turn the Sync off.

I'm trying to absorb all of this. I'm either home or close to home most of the time i.e. 3G, Wifi, but when I go out of town to work at the race track for three or four days at a time, I'm out of 3G range and assume that I use the next step down... which is actually pretty good.

I stay completely away from wifi and 3G during the daytime hours while I'm at work. So I'm understanding that this phone is constantly trying to locate 3G & wifi and I should try an app to toggle them off, but I can't find any mention of 3G on my phone settings. I'm trying JuiceDefender but can't understand what it's doing and can find no settings to adjust except pre-sets. It says Wifi is off when it is not, so probably will uninstall it. But I believe that if I can disable 3G for four days I'd probably save a lot of battery, am I correct? I just need to receive calls and texts and maybe update weather during the day but am back close to wifiein the evening.

Thanks
Tim

Looking at the "Permissions" for Juice Defender, Green Power and others, after what I've read on forums I do worry about the about what access I'd be giving to my phone. There have been some pretty extensive warnings about this, so I don't know if people are just throwing caution to the wind or just understand these things better. Also warnings about Task Killers.

The most I've *ever* gotte out of this thing is 8 hrs. And thats with 3g off for half that time. If I don't. Turn it off, I get 4 at best with one phone call.

How do you turn 3G off? I can't find anywhere on my phone with that option.
Samsung Captivate - At&T

Goto page 1 of this thread as there should be a link for network there. That allows you to turn 3G off. Another option is to put the phone in airplane mode when not in use.

That would just turn off the mechanism that searches for 3G right? Wouldn't turn off access to the Internet through another method.

I can access the link on the web, but not in the market... sounds pretty risky anyway, maybe be why it's not on the market via the phone.

Update. Downloaded the "Data Enabler Widget" (no "Permissions" listed!) yesterday and fully charged phone in the evening, then disconnected it from charger. This morning the phone remains fully charged! So thus far it's been a success. Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions. I'll let you know if things revert back to battery draining. (By the way, how do you add the "Thanks" tab at the bottom of the messages?)

If you put the phone in Airplane mode, doesn't that cut off all data flow? I need a way to turn off ONLY 3G (in order to stop searching for it to save battery) I can turn off wifi, but I want a way to leave the alternate to 3g and wifi running, whatever that is called.

If you goto the first page of this thread on your phone and click the link it gives you the option to open market and then you can install from there.

I tried that several times in three different browsers. It always just froze up the screen and never opened the market. No big deal, I'll look for another option, thanks.

as far as overnight usage is concerned, doesn't putting the phone in airplane mode do the same thing? cuts off all radio searching , hence battery drainage?

Maybe, but I don't know enough about these things to give advice; so I'll report what's worked so far for me. I will say that my use of the device is limited right now (though will probably significantly increase a few months down the road), and just going on the web briefly today, then switching off the "data enabled", my battery icon is still completely green and thus fully charged. Yesterday I did turn on airplane mode for few seconds then turned it off. I also had to reset my device (it didn't have much new info on it yet) for google calender reasons. The only other thing I've done is several cycles of recharging, so it's hard to know what cured the battery problem. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The airplane mode disables all radio connections - 3G, WiFi, and normal cell phone connection so you can't even make calls or get texts.

Disabling just the 3G lets your phone operate like normal cell phone, only you can't browse internet, unless you have a Wi-Fi connection going.

Disabling 3G really makes the battery drain like a normal non-smart cell phone which means that if you don't use 3G at all, the phone battery will last a few days, even a week.

For example, listening to MP3 for an hour drains only about 2-3% of the battery - I measured that today..

Browsing internet for an hour on 3G connection probably drains about 20% of the battery.

Juice defender works excellent for me. Another one is Quick settings. Turning off wifi and 3g will eat battery the fastest.

Another thing I did, I bought 2 batteries from ebay along with a wall battery charger. Extra clips!

I use quick settings and just switch 3g off until I need it. My battery lasts MUCH longer that way, and you can still make phone calls and send/receive texts with it off. I can't really think of a reason to leave it on all the time unless you need notifications from certain apps? Or am I missing something?

It's really a convenience thing. If i turn off 3g, I can't automatically make calls using google voice, get facebook updates, twitter , email, everpaper, reader, etc. And toggling it everytime to do each one is a pain in the ass. I'd sugest instead of turning it off adjust your sync settings to an hour or more for each one. Except email I will leave push immediately.

I kind of think trying to get the most out of your battery is kinda pointless. It's like trying to get the most MPG out of your car you could spend forever tweaking etc for not much gain. If you're like most people and work in an office inside, who cares if your battery goes down why stress it? Just leave a charger at work and charge it up if you are going out somewhere. Or plug it in before sleep etc. If you are gonna be away from your charger for a while that would be a time to be mindful about using the phone or turn off 3g..

I'm at 70% battery with 2+ days of light usage (3g turned off most of the time unless checking email or using @bat 11) not bad at all
