Exchange ActiveSync on HTC Hero

That would be my last resort for over the weekend. BTW, how do you do it. Can't seem to find it in the manual. Is that the same as Factory Data Reset-Reset Phone.

ok, as an exchange admin i have to tell you in order to use ssl (which most reasonable companies would have for their exchange server, c'mon it's $80/yr!) the cert needs to be imported into the phone before the activesync setup. this is true even of windows mobile phones! import/export the cert into a browswer and then sync to the phone or place it on a memory card, and the OS should prompt to import the cert after trying to open it on the phone (i am going off windows device steps because i don't have my droid yet)

i can't speak for compatibility with device password policies. usually 2003 doesn't have this enabled by default but it is on exchange 2007.

seriously though, get a valid cert. if you find a local reseller they can provide cheaper than over-the-counter (we resell rapidssl for $65 a year, pm for info)

This is absolutely not true. We have used several phones and we only use SSL with exchange. I'm the exchange admin and even in exchange 2003 and 2007, we have never had an issue. I also recommend a certificate especially if you are a business. You are risking exposing information which can be acquired very easily. The only phone that ever needed to import the certificate was the Nextel I930 because they didn't have the correct root certificates. The newer phones today actually automatically grab the root certificate from the provider.

We have successfully done phones all the way back from the mogul/instinct/etc.

What you guys need to do is look in logs. Verify you are getting passed the firewall and also that you are using the EXACT name on your certificate.

Post errors and I will help.

I finally got a reply from HTC themself. They said to...

The issue your having is cause your device maybe requiring a certificate to operate the server on your device. A work around for this issue would be to open up the browser on your device. Type in the address for your OWA Server and login. Once you have logged into your OWA server on the device. Go back to the Exchange Server on your device and hit refresh. Your device will then synchronize correctly with your exchange server.

I tried this and still nothing. I think I need to reset. I hate to do it but it's a day of football so I will have to multi-task today.

Hey there.
I bought a HTC hero last week and just like you I had big problems setting up my corporate mail. In the process I have probaly been reading 200 threads on various forums, and have talked with HTC hotline.
My company have a pretty strickt policy regarding mail etc. They also have the pin lock feature.
Today I managed to sync my corporate mail server.
The answer is a third party program.
Get the program TOUCHDOWN. This program supports SSL, and pinlock. The cool thing is that it is not the phone that lockes, like the windows phones, but only the mailprogram that must be unlocked by entering a pincode.
Only downside is that the program cost a little cash, but ok....it is worth it.

I read that also roadsync should support this but havnt tried it out yet.

Well I did the system reset and still no luck. I have had more correspondence with HTC...they are totally clueless.

Guess I need to go the TOUCHDOWN route. MLS, where/how did you down load it? Do I have to remove my current Activesync setup before installing?

Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks! Downloaded and installed without a hitch. Can see everything. Best $10 I spent so far. Now it's time to tweak it a bit.

Hi,
I've read all the posts regarding hero and activesync - but none of them seem to mention a problem I am having - hence the post.

I have managed to get my hero to connect to my exchange server without error - I can even see the folder list.

What I can't see is any emails. I can send emails fine and they sync in my sent items when viewed in outlook - but no emails are shown.

Does anyone know why this would be?

regards

Can't help you with your problem. Seems that the Hero still has a lot of bugs. I would highly recommend the Touchdown program mentioned earlier. Since installing, it locked up on me only once and have not had a sync issue since.

After 1 year I finally have found a solution that works for me and I personally never thought that the solution would be what it was.

After months of fiddling with ISA Server and Exchange - the problem was related to Sophos PureMessage for Exchange. The following link points you to an older version of the solution but the settings are more or less the same in version 3.

PureMessage for Windows/Exchange: synchronization with PDAs fails when using ActiveSync

Thank you to Mike for fixing this.

Hi all,

My HTC Hero is syncen mail and calendar just fine. Contacts are also syncen, but not all of them.
I have several contacts in my exchange contact folder that are not on my phone. Deleting and recreating these users solves this issue, but since I don't want to manually check if i have all the contacts I was hopeing there is a better way to fix this.

Anyone else encountered this problem?

thanks!

Having the same problem with Phantom contacts....sometimes there...some times not

I'm having this exact same problem. I can connect and view all of my folders and send emails, but no emails will show up. :( If anybody finds a solution for this I'd love to hear it.

Android does not like a space between first and last names of the exchange username. I had our support guys on it and, regardless of type of SSL certificate, I could not sync. All credentials were OK and tested on iPhone so the worked on the assumption that it was a 'quirk' and tried a few small things.

Now very happy and secure!

Slightly OT but still related to Exchange on Hero. It appears that my Hero is now Syncing ALL Inbox (*which I want) and ALL Sent items (which I don't want) into the Hero. So becuase of the massive amounts of items in my Sent Items folder I'm running out of Phone Storage.

Is there a way to tell the Hero to "Sync this folder but not this other one"?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not able to find settings to define specific mail folders - you can minimise the size of any email that syncs - you can also restrict to sync mail to 3-30 days old only. Settings>data synchronisation>Exchange ActiveSync>Menu>Settings>Mail Settings.

Hope this helps

Damnit!! I just starting getting the security warning today on my Hero. So now I'm f'ed
I love the phone, don't get me wrong, but sometimes the "basics" just don't seem to work like my BB did... eventhough HTC claims they should.

I have same problem with HTC Hero, The first thing I did after I got my Hero was setting up corporate email, and it was working properly for three months but recently I reset the phone to factory setting, afterthat I can not connect to the corporate server
error message is " Authentication failed. Please verify username and/or password", I have tried with touchdown and working without any problems, so dear IT experts give a good solution otherwise HTC hero may become HTC zero for me.thankssssssss

I am able to sync email, contacts, and calendar. The problem I am having is that I can receive email, but I can not send. No error, it just sits in the outbox and goes nowhere. Anyone having this issue?

Are you sure the email isn't sending? I get the same thing on a regular basis but I found out that people are actually receiving the email, it's just the phone that doesn't update.

Eventually they seem to clear up on their own

Thanks for the reply - I don't think that is the issue, I left an email sitting in the"outbox" on my phone for the better part of the day yesterday, and the email was not received by my co-worker. I'll throw one out there again and let it sit and we'll see what happens.

The other odd thing I noticed, is that the phone will not connect to the Exchange server unless I am on WiFi - once I connect, I can turn off the WiFi and it syncs fine, but it will not make the initial connection over my cell data connection... Odd...

For those of you with ONLY the calender synch issue. Why not install the Google Sync client on your work PC to sync your Outlook calendar with your Google Calendar which will then pull down to the HTC device?

Google calendar is more limited than outlook and exchange and cchanges on your outlook would then only get updated when your office pc was onwhich doesn't really help if you're accessing via the web from multiple computers.
