Hello all,

Really interested to know what you are running and why? The root guide I followed took me straight to ext3 which i did without questioning and have since discovered that ext3 uses more cpu (and therefore battery) and also shortens the SD card life. Though i'm probably likely to buy a new phone before the memory cells start dying.

In fact, the author of the Kernel I use (11-c) goes so far as to say that ext3 and ext4 are not suitable for memory cards. Ironically, my phone does crash every so often so i wonder if i do benefit from ext3 journaling protecting the data, or if the more streamlined ext2 would be just as good.

So what is your partition and why?

thanks, dino.:)

ext2, cos when i first installed a custom rom with apps2sd (modaco 1 point something) that was what was recommended, and i've never seen the need to change it.

ext3 and ext4 add things like fancy journalling and stuff like that which make the filesystem faster, more flexible and robust etc, but involve lots of incremental writes to disk, which makes them unsuitable for a filesystem stored on an SD card (physical hard disk YES, proper flash disk drive with load balancing etc PROBABLY/MAYBE/DEPENDS, basic SD card flash memory NO). They also allow much larger filesystem sizes, but until sandisk release that 16 terabyte SD card we've all been waiting for that's not really going to do you much good.

Basically, all the fancy new stuff is there to handle massively parallel access by hundreds or thousands of users simultaneously to enormous file systems disributed across multiple disks in globe spanning networks. This is probably overkill on a mobile phone. Stick to ext2.

Dear Dave,
I really appreciate your opinion.
I have been using the EXT4 for a month now with an updated version of the Incredible S Nand Rom I was on.
I thought, back then, that to upgrade to ext4 would be great as the rom update was released.
The rom was snappy and smooth when I used it with ext2.
When I upgraded my file system (on Sd Card) and used it with the ext4, the rom seemed to be laggy !!!
This I encountered especially when phone syncs with whatever service (weather, mail, facebook for HTC Sense ...)
I thought it was the rom upgrade !!!!
I doubled checked and found all people using the same rom upgrade are happy with no problems.:mad::(

So I googled the ext2 vs ext4 thing, and there was your answer :)
And the whole thread :D

I reverted back to the ext2 file system and the rom flies smoothley on my phone.

Thank you :)
