Accessories Extra Cables?

The ones I got from the link above seem fine. I woke up this afternoon (night shift) and realized I forgot to plug in the phone this morning. It was at 37%, I plugged it in and took a shower and did the usual personal maintenance and grabbed the phone in in the 30-40 min it was at 68%. I can't imagine it going much faster. That was at about 5:50 this evening, now it it 7:35 and I'm at 58% with a few web searches on the way to work. I was playing with the voice to text search. In a diesel with straight piped exhaust it does not work so well.

this. except without the diesal or the night shift, lol. I have the same cords, and they seem to work really well. their only fault is not fitting perfect straight out of the package - and after shaving off that tiny bit (not even as much as larry shaved)- you can barely notice that I shaved it, honestly- the plugs fit in perfectly.

Did you get that retractable one yet? I cannot seem to find your thread

nope, not here yet. it supposedly shipped a day or so ago, but I don't remember seeing a tracking number (I track everything going in or out with package buddy- sometimes there is a lot going out of here)... so I am just waiting...

Question:
I know in cell phones past I've been told to shy away from generic chargers as they will charge the battery but will decrease overall battery life (useful life of the battery).
Do we have any similar concerns using "non-OEM" charging components with our phones?

I got these OEM Samsung ones from ebay which are excatly the same as the ones that came with the phone. So the only downside is that they are no longer than the ones they came with but to me thats no big deal.

OEM USB Data Cord Cable for Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate - eBay (item 180557982400 end time Nov-05-10 23:07:07 PDT)

Yeah, I presently have a USB extension cable plugged into mine since it's so short and my outlet is behind my bed. I was wondering if even THAT would cause a problem. I've only had this phone for a couple of weeks so I can't determine if this is having a negative impact on the battery (since it takes time to find that kind of thing out). I may end up sticking with the OEM ones since I really don't want to cheap out on a charger just to have to replace my battery down the line.

That's fine. But allow me to update my user experience of the product I linked in post #2 in this thread. So its been what 6 weeks now, no complaints. The price with shipping is less than $5 for all 3. Wont beat that deal anywhere. More importantly I notice no difference between any of these 3 and the charger I got in the box. FWIW

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it!

It is a chunk of wire, don't over think it!

I understand there are some things that can be simplified as you have above, but in this case, you must think of it from a different perspective. The purpose of buying these aftermarket or no-name or generic or whatever you want to call them chargers/cables is to save money over buying one from Verizon or Samsung. So if that is the ultimate goal, you have to consider any negative ramifications for doing so (that may cost you money down the road...like... having to replace your battery). Sure, you could think "a cord is a cord is a cord is a cord" and just be done with it. Just like one may think "a charge is a charge is a charge" and always charge their phone from the car charger (cigarette lighter).

Experience tells us that this is NOT the same (the car charger example). It's [somewhat] known that the use of a car charge vs. a home charger will lessen the useful life of your cell phone battery.

So it is from this viewpoint that I ask if these generic cables/chargers perform to the same spec as OEM.
For further evidence, see this post in this thread:

Does it charge and sync properly? I've used some other micro usb cables, and they charge the phone but they wont sync the phone to my pc.

Thanks for the info!
Best,
X

I don't disagree. In most instances, a chunk of wire is a chunk of wire... but in this case, I don't think this is being overthought.

The chargers, I will agree with. The chunk of wire between the chrager and the phone.... Na, I'm not buying that one. Why some cables will transfer data and some will not is simple, some have the power connectors only and some have both power and data connectors in the package. If the power makes it from point A to point B from whatever charger and device you have... your all set.

Would I be able to file down the MonoPrice.com 6ft cable part where it goes into the phone with something like a nail file? I have a dremel but no sanding bits (I broke them all) and I don't feel like going and buying new.

Also, can anyone confirm these do data and charge?

Are the OEM cables 28/28AWG too?

I'm debating between these and the OEM samsung ones on ebay.
Thanks!

you only need tp file a tiny bit, so a file should work, just keep at it till it fits ok. and they DO connect AND charge- at least they do for me. :)

Yes, the material your filing on is nothing but a rubberized plastic. I used the bench grinder because I have one... and I'm the sledge hammer and duct tape kind of guy!

thanks for the updates guys. Ordered 3 x 6' cables last night. Will trim em up when I get them and start leaving them in various places I can forsee needing a quick charge.

Friendly bump.

Bought 3 of the 6' cables from MonoPrice. They came QUICK!
Used a utility knife to cut the smallest sliver I could all the way around each one then it pulled off easily. You can't even tell I modified them (if you cut straight enough it's not noticable).

So far so good. Haven't really "tested" each one but I've now got one perma-plugged into my desktop @ work (no more fussing with it or forgetting to bring it in).

Kinda sucks that I have to do a mid-day charge on this phone but all technology comes with a price!
