You can proceed without a goldcard but you will only have one option if you wish to un-root. That is the Official HTC 2.3 gingerbread ROM Upgrade Utility which is available from shipped ROMs. It may be worth downloading that before you go any further. Here is a link Shipped ROMs

Is this suitable for my Desire which is running Android 2.2.2?
