Fascinate vs Droid X

It's funny someon mentioned the White being a bit blue on AMOLED screens and I thought to myself that I dont' have that problem so I pulled up Google.com on an Eris and Incredible and the Eris with it's LCD screen looked white while the Incredible indeed looked slightly blue, never noticed it before . Ohh well the quality of the black makes it cool with me I look at more black then white

I got the DX about 10 days ago and I finally seem to have gotten it working the way *I* want it to - I have to say it was a bit more work stripping out some of the bloat and customizing some of the features than I thought it was going to be, but in the end - and with the help of several key apps - I've got it behaving like I want.

I (like everyone else) have been finding the DX a little too big for one-handed usage, and although I (like everyone else) like the battery life, reception, and call quality, I'm tempted by the slim and smaller form factor of the SF.

plus I'm finding the 'hard' buttons a little *too* hard.

I actually prefer the screen on the DX under real-world conditions, I find it retains more clarity in bright sunshine and the white point is *way* more accurate (important for judging pics).
I will admit tho that the SF looks gorgeous, and the DX pisses me off with it's **inexplicable** 4:3 crop for wallpaper for a 16:9 screen (WTF?!? seriously!)

but really, with any phone, what it all comes down to is: how good of a **phone** is it?

the DX gets great reception, sounds great (on *both* ends) and has an awesome battery life.

so, my question is this: for all and any who have tried both under real world conditions just how much difference is their between the two re: reception, call quality and battery life??

we've heard from a few folks but I'd like to hear from a few more.

cheers,
b

I have both now and I'm really really really really torn!! (did I say that enough times?)

The Fascinate is the perfect, and I mean perfect size for a smartphone. The screen is responsive, the phone is fast.

Now that I've been looking at mine more closely, I've found one thing I really don't like: patterns!! I can see patterns on anything white. This might be because my eyes are excellent (PRK laser surgery FTW!), but it bugs me - not a lot, just a little. The DX has smooth and crisp text accross the board. The Fascinate has sharp text, but on anything white, text or background, I can actually see the pixel patterns. The "blueness" doesn't bother me at all. I like the color blue. But the patterns bother me a little, as the HTC Eris and DX have no patterns at all.

Can anyone else see these patterns?

Also, the call quality on the Samsung is fine. The reception is good too. The DX just does better at both of these things, well above average for a smartphone, or ANY phone for that matter.

Which one do I keep? I am completely stumped and torn. Videos and photos pop on the Fascinate, more than the DX, but text actually looks noticeably better on the DX.

The Fascinate fits perfectly in the hand though, and it has supreme ergonomics. Better looking more attractive design, too. What do I do???? ARRGGG!!!!

I think the Fascinate has more potential then the X . They're both great phones, I just did not like the form factor of the DroidX and I lvoe the form of the Fascinate. I just think it's a gorgeous phone.

So I guess what I'm saying is keep the Fascinate

I fear Motorola wont use the Diversity Antennas or the 3 mics again. I hope they do tho..which also means I hope they keep making 4"+ phones.

I may have to check out LG or Nokia in the future. I gotta have good reception and my phone has to work on the subway systems.

I live in a poor reception area and work in an office in the middle of a cement building, so needless to say the signal is a little weak in my office as well. ;)

The Fascinate isn't as good in this one important area for me. So I'll be exchanging my Fascinate for a Droid X. My wife on the other hand loves her Fascinate and the prospect of dropping a call now and then doesn't bother her (she had an HTC Droid Eris 'nuff said). She's keeping her Fascinate, and I know she'll never in a million years go for a Droid X LOL.

So, yes, it's just what your priorities are in a phone that will determine which phone is best for YOUR needs. :)

Whats up with these weaker radios on the Samsung? This is why I gave up my Epic. The evo had a much better signal. I'm lucky Verizon's tower is just a few blocks away and that helps with give me a strong signal on the Fascinate. But I had the Vibrant also, and that also had a terrible signal for me indoors.

If anyone had told me six months ago I would go through all this trouble for a Samsung product, I would have laughed at them. Except for TV's, my track record with Samsung products is horrible. I am loving the phone, hopefully it last past the first year unlike other products I've had of theirs.

I remembered what they call the software that controls the radio on Android phones, the baseband file. If they came out with a baseband update that somehow miraculously improved the reception on the Fascinate, then I would happily keep it. But I'm not gonna hold my breath.

Its possible. The Froyo baseband on the Droid 1 had better reception than the one on 2.1. Download speeds were better too. But, remember.. I'm talking about the Droid 1's reception compared to other phones...lol

The Droid 1 had better reception on 2.1 than the Samsung u740 and the Samsung Omnia 1. I said I wouldnt hold past phone reception against Samsung...but cmon...whats going on....

Is it evil of me to want that gorgeous screen AND a phone that has killer reception?

Why can't there be a clear cut winner here .... this is seriously getting very depressing. I'm playing with the Fascinate and the Droid X right now - one in each hand - and I honestly at this moment cannot decide which one to keep. I know it's "just a stupid phone" ... but the grief I've had from the Eris from day one (3 replacements under warranty, dialer from HELL, phenomenally sluggish performance as a PHONE and text message device) has taught me not to make this decision lightly. I really want to be happy with this thing for the next year or so. Therefore, I want to make the right call here.

The Droid X has things I really want in a phone, and so does the Fascinate, and I'm having a hard time prioritizing.

The Droid X hands down wins for call quality and reception. Fortunately the Samsung is at least good, so it won't suck as a phone. Text also looks better to me on the Droid X.

The Samsung has a much better form factor, and is substantially more ergonomic in the pocket and especially in use in the hand. The Droid X continues to be a challenge for me to operate one handed, whilst the Fascinate is a piece of cake.

Those to factors are the main benefits to each handset, and of great importance to me. You will experience the phone's ergonomics, or lack of, every time you use the phone. You will also experience the quality of calls and reception every time you make a call, and I will be making a LOT of those.

So which factor do I decide is equally important to me?? I mean, both those factors are really really important, and I'm having a hard time deciding which one is the "most" important.

LOL. For me it has to be a phone first and foremost, but I had the droid 1, arguably one of the ugliest phones around. :D

Then its in post #1 the attached file, he seems to have revised it at least twice

I think the main linked versions and the most recommended versions (most stable) out right now are only 1GB. I'll wait until the main version is down to 512 before I go trying to modify the current 1GB version. Looks like the main install is still 1GB.

@SirKronan, IMHO, the phone part is just a small piece of the whole mobile experience. :) In my case, it is the least I worry about because most of my friends do not answer their phone. They only answer text.

Keep in mind that form factor will not change. It is what it is. But call quality or any software issue can be changed by OTA update....something to think about. :D

An OTA can only do so much if the radio is weak. I think and this is just a guess, you are in the minority. Most people use it as a phone first. Especially with people doing away with their landlines. I think most people have kept the X or the Fascinate because they actually like the form factor.

I dont agree with substring about the phone part being a small piece. I learned a lesson with reception and phones a few years ago. I wont make that mistake again, no matter how many features, how good the specs are.

The reception on the X is the only reason my Droid 1 is a back up phone now. If it had the same reception, I dont know what I woulda done. If it was worse? It was going back & I would be rocking my Droid 1 right now...

I do agree that most ppl think like substring does. Look at how many reviews leave out or glance over reception and call quality.

I look at it like....if the phone reception is not so good, how is it gonna do sending texts, browsing the web on 3G, etc.? On my Droid 1 and X, there are areas I can have no data reception or data reception is bad, but I will have decent, reliable phone reception. Does texting use data or cellular?

I've too have been using both these phones for the past 5 days. Bouncing back and forth. I'm torn for all the same reasons everyone esle has given. I just don't know what to do. I switch to the Fascinate and ultimately start missing the X. I switch to the X, and right away start missing the Fascinate.

This sucks!

Like the other person said, why can't there just be a clear winner :(

I think if you make clear priorities it wouldn't be a terribly hard decision. So for me the thing I do most is texting, then internet browsing, then the actual phone itself. Also GPS is super important to me. i may not use a lot, but I'm prone to getting lost, and am terrible at directions, so my phone's GPS needs to work. In my case, my Fascinate's GPS has worked ok once it got going, but if I'm lost I dont have a few minutes to sit around and wait for it to lock on. A lot of the other things like using it as a clock, calendar, and such are about equal on both phones, and I'm not a big mobile gamer, so the better GPU in the fascinate isn't important.

I atually bought hte Fascinate over the X, but I did so mostly impulsively after seeing the SFs screen, and being told it was the only one in stock within a 30 minute drive. However, my best friend is getting his X in this week, i plan on trying it, and I may be joining the X camp. While the screen isn't as vibrant, it is still nice on the X. More importantly, call quality on the SF isn't great (unlike what I have heard from the X), the SF has random lagginess, and I think the texting will be about the same. For my priorities (texting, net browsing, calling, and GPS) to X seems to have a slight advantage.

I'm honestly not that concerned about the long run. Both phones are very similar in the hardware department, and I dont think a slightly faster GPU will make a big difference. Both have a 1 gig CPU and 512 MB of ram, so android updates will be equally supported, even if it has to be left to the community. I really dotn think there is a way to tell if the X or the SF will have a better community in the long run. But the X being locked down will definitely hurt the availability of custom ROMs.

Well, I think I have decided to keep the Fascinate. I have rooted it, removed some bloat, run autokiller at strict, and have launcher pro plus installed. The thing flies, and the screen is much easier to read outdoors. It is also much lighter, and vastly more ergonomic in the hand and comfortable in the pocket.

It's no droid x in call reception, but it is still quite good. I get no weird distortion or echo, and I can change the volume when it's up against my head, unlike the droid x. The camera is better too. I also love the puzzle lock screen.

I was wavering just a tiny bit on possibly switching to the X. But....one of my co-workers got the X today (his first Android phone) and needed me to help him learn to use it.

So, I got to play with the phone "in the wild" and not tethered to a display shelf in the Verizon store. I'm glad I got the opportunity to do so, because I am 100% set in my decision to keep my Fascinate now.

I tested out the internet, my Fascinate was noticibly snappier (we both had full service and 3g at the time). I wasn't impressed with the widgets on the X.

But....the kicker? I could NOT leave the screen on my Fascinate. OMG, it is so much clearer and brighter. The screen on the X seemed almost smoky to me? The scrolling on the Fascinate seemed a lot smoother as well, but that could just be me.

I am really, really loving the Fascinate the more I use it! And, I'm planning to root it in the near future (a big step for a non-techie like myself)! Don't worry, I have help. :p

The entire time I was helping my friend with his phone, he kept saying: "Why does your screen look so much better than mine?" He also liked the widgets better and the size/look of the phone in general.

Guess what? He's taking his X back and getting a Fascinate tomorrow!

**These are strictly MY opinions. I definitely see some great things about the X, I just prefer the Fascinate for myself. I'm finding it to be the perfect phone for me!! **

I didn't like stock touchwiz or stock motoblur. Launcher Pro feels noticeably faster on both phones than their stock UI. Unrooted and with stock settings there were places I noticed both phones lag.

I really didn't notice this. I thought both phones had snappy web browsers, whether using stock browser or the Dolphin HD browser. But coming from an Eris, I suppose anything would be an improvement! :D

But....the kicker? I could NOT leave the screen on my Fascinate. OMG, it is so much clearer and brighter. The screen on the X seemed almost smoky to me? The scrolling on the Fascinate seemed a lot smoother as well, but that could just be me.

You are right about the brighter and more contrasty screen on the Fascinate. Text is actually clearer on the Droid X, and clearer even on older phones like the Eris. Nature of the beast. TFT LCD vs SuperAMOLED. They each have strengths and weaknesses. I have good enough eyesight that I actually could see the screen patterns on the SuperAMOLED screen the first time I used it. The LCD screen on the Droid X has noticeably crisper and clearer text, and is a hair easier to read if you read a lot of eBooks. I only read on it a little, so no big deal. And after two days of usage, your eyes (and brain) seem to get accustomed to it. Doesn't bother me a bit now, and I most definitely appreciate the improved visibility in the sun, and the improved contrast when viewing photos or video. These advantages more than make up for losing a bit of crispness on the text.

Crisp, sharp letters do you no good if it's so bright you can't read your phone anyways!!

I am really, really loving the Fascinate the more I use it! And, I'm planning to root it in the near future (a big step for a non-techie like myself)! Don't worry, I have help. :p

I rooted the Droid X, got rid of all the bloat I could, installed AutoKiller, and installed touch pro. Felt like a brand new phone. Never slowed down one bit the whole week I used it, even loading it up with apps. AutoKiller has a truly dynamic and intelligent method of managing apps, services, processes, and memory usage, freeing up memory in the most efficient manner possible.

I also rooted the Fascinate (no one step out yet! ARGG!! My first foray into Android SDK was rooting my fascinate!! I gotta admit, I was a little intimidated by all the commands at first, but I took it step by step, and it worked. Wahoo!!!) I would totally understand if you waited for a one click option. I used the one-click on the Droid X. Beyond simple.

Now, after rooting the Fascinate, I also trashed some bloat, installed autokiller, and redownloaded my launcher pro. Substantially faster than stock. I haven't even done the one click lag fix yet. (don't want to give up 1GB of my memory!!!) When they get the stable and accepted build of the lag fix down to 512mb I will be fine doing that one though.

I really didn't like the locked down UI's of moto's ninjablur, nor sammy's touchwiz. No thanks. Launcher pro is not only faster, but much more customizable. I recommend it on either phone.

The entire time I was helping my friend with his phone, he kept saying: "Why does your screen look so much better than mine?" He also liked the widgets better and the size/look of the phone in general.

I do miss motorola's resizable widgets. On top of that, I hate the stock weather/clock widget that comes with the Fascinate. WeatherBug FTL!! The size and look of the Fascinate are worlds more attractive and ergonomic than the droid x. The DX is robust and solid feeling, but it's not comfortable.

Want to know what else? All that extra bulk for a mechanical shutter, dual flashes, an extra 3 MP, and the Fascinate STILL takes better pictures than the Droid X, with or without the flash, in low light, etc. Not surprising though. Samsung has been making cameras for a long, long time, and they make some good compact sensors for sure.

Guess what? He's taking his X back and getting a Fascinate tomorrow!

**These are strictly MY opinions. I definitely see some great things about the X, I just prefer the Fascinate for myself. I'm finding it to be the perfect phone for me!! **

The X is awesome, robust, powerful, and impressive. No doubt about it. It's one of the best smartphones ever made, period. That thing got bars in places I didn't know you could get a signal, and boy was the call quality good, but I'm in your camp too, after using both side by side for some time now, in multiple environments.

The Samsung is just fitting my needs better. Let me explain a couple more of the little touches that win me over to the Samsung:

1. Puzzle lock screen: WOW this is cool. I was whining like the rest about no notification LED, but the puzzle lock screen more than makes up for it. No matter how much tweaking I did to the droid X, the screen unlock swipe was NEVER smooth for me. Everything else ran like butter after rooting, cleaning, and modding what I could, but not the stupid unlock swipe, whether live wallpaper or not. Not only is the puzzle screen smoother, but I can go right to where I left off, or I can go to texts if I got a text, or phone history if I missed a call. It's stock, works whether rooted or not, whether you have launcher pro or not, and it works smoothly. No lag at all. Live wallpapers play smoothly in the background the whole time. It's so impressive, and wows the crap out of everybody I show it to. Not only is it functional and responsive, but it has "cool factor" as well. Win!!

2. NO MORE POWER WIDGET!!! Sorry to shout, but that's how I feel! The power widget is integrated right into the notification dropdown screen. So flipping convenient. Again, it's a stock option, doesn't seem to lag the phone at all, and works regardless of root, launcher, etc. I love it. Saves me a whole row of space on my homescreens, too. I like keeping it down to three homescreens for speed and convenience anyways. This makes it four items easier. :)

3. I can change the volume of calls while the phone is pressed against my face. Maybe there's a setting on the Droid X, but I couldn't find it. I actually had to move the phone away from my ear while on a call in order to adjust the volume. It did this stock, and rooted. Very annoying. I've never had a phone I couldn't adjust the volume on while it was pressed against my ear. Moving it away means you're either interrupting the speaker, or going to miss a bit of what they say. The Samsung, like a "normal" phone lets me adjust away while it's right against my ear. Totally convenient. I know why Motorola disables the screen when it's pressed against your face. Same reason they all do. But why the buttons?? They're actually stiff buttons, and hard to accidentally press anyways ... just doesn't make sense.

4. Silence. The click of the Droid X buttons is mildly annoying to myself and my wife at night. Sometimes I'll play on the droid for a bit after the wife falls asleep. I hated the noisy buttons on the Droid X. The Samsung has silent touch buttons. I know you lose your great, accurate tactile feedback, and the feeling of defined buttons. But it's worth it to have silence!

Anyhow. those are just little things, and it is actually just a partial list, but those things combine to provide me with a much smoother experience with the Fascinate than the Droid X. Don't get me wrong. I love the CRAP out of the Droid X. It's amazing. I just like the Samsung even more, and it fits what I need it to fit and feels how I need it to feel noticeably better.

Boo on you Kriss76 and SirKronen. :D

I was all set to return my Fascinate tomorrow for the X and now you go and post why the Fascinate is better (for your needs). :)

I guess I'll have to make a tough choice tomorrow when I go down to the store to spend some time on an X. Unfortunately, it will be tethered to the display in the store. I'm used to the Motorola TFT LCD though, my last phone was a D1.

Ahhh! It is a really tough decision! I'm very particular about my phone and I just want to make sure I'm getting what I'm going to really love for the next while. So, if that is the X for you, then go for it! I can see why people love it.

Good luck with your decision, I'm sure you'll love whichever phone you decide on! :) Let us know what you decide!!
