Fed up with Desire now.

i think the htc mail app stores all emails on internal memory, so you might find you free up loads (and loads and loads) of space by clearing out that inbox.

So not touching the bootloader won't void warranty? Roze if you say something like that you gotta back it up with proof! I wouldn't have thought HTC Would agree with that statement!
 
Just Root it and get 2.2. When I installed my Froyo ROM, I have about 130MB free.

Now I have 18 games. Including 8 Hi Res ones.
More apps than I know what to do with.

And I'm one HAPPY puppy.

I don't get all these people moaning about memory size, or battery life.

ROOT, INSTALL FROYO AND CHARGE IT EVERY NIGHT!!!

Works for me, and out of the countless mobiles I've had, my Desire is by FAR the best. I'll DEFINATLY be sticking with HTC when I upgrade.

Would you guys mind explaining briefly the difference between the Apps2SD added with Froyo and the Apps2SD achieved by rooting? As I understand from Roze's previous post the Froyo Apps2SD is very limited where as with Rooted Apps2SD you can force any application or game to the SD card? If you simply want to root and not install froyo before the official ota update will you be able to use Apps2SD to its full capacity?

Also, I understand from reading previous threads that it is possible to install the official OTA update even after rooting and installing a current version of the ROM?
 
Have you tried a Cache cleaning app like Cache Cleaner or Quick System Info. They'll free up space at the touch of a button.

Well have fun spending all that money, and having absolutely no control over what you can, and can't do with your new toy. Over what you can install, and what interface you use.

Personally if I was to spend that kind of cash, I'd like a say over what it does.

In fact, on this forum, I don't think anyone has truely bricked their desire yet.

I just rooted my Orange UK, Non SIM unlocked, HBOOT 0.83, 1.22, Desire,


Piece of p**s.. Honestly, I shat myself when I got ROM manager installed and tried to do a backup and it didnt load what it was supposed to, pulled battery and job done :D

Use the unrevoked3 method, it truly is one click, now enjoying stuff only available to root users :D

Droid Den - Android Rooting: A Glossary of Terms - Droid Den

A2SD

This is what we normally call the default Froyo method of storing apps on the sdcard. This is dependent on the application allowing you to store it on the sdcard. You can move apps to the sdcard on froyo by going to settings > Applications > manage applications. Click on an app and then click on move to sdcard. The application will be stored in a folder called .android_secure on your sdcard, in an encrypted state.

A2SD+

This is what we normally call the standard rooting method of storing apps onto the sdcard. This essentially tricks the phone into thinking the apps are stored on internal memory (in reality it changes the reference to point to the sdcard, instead of the internal location). The apps are actually stored on an ext partition of the sdcard (you cannot see this on the sdcard yourself)

Thanks lekky, I understand a little better now. However it is still unclear to me if one can be had without the other. For example will the root method A2SD+ work on a rooted device running 2.1?

I am hesitant to install froyo on my phone at the moment because I have a Canadian Desire with an SLCD screen from Telus and there is currently no RUU available. Telus has stated that they will not honor warranties if this is carried out.

Oh yes, and my compliments on the icons you included in the homescreen thread, I've been using them with Launcher Pro for a while now.

You put it in a better way than I would have. I was going to say:

Enjoy having fewer options, ooooh apps store, ooooh itunes, ooooh no flash player! And an unremovable battery, with its short life span you should be able to carry a spare battery but you can't unless you buy one of those 6 lbs external battery packs.

Where I live, Desire is $450 and the iPhone 4 is $750, even the iPhone 3GS is still over $600. That's a real easy decision for me, I went with an iPod Touch for a lousy $170 so I can get music off itunes rather than wasting materials buying CD's that I'll only use once.
 
I was using HTC mail and at the limit for space.

Swapped to K9, and straight away gained 40mb! I assume K9 stores it's data on the SD.
 
I'd say gogogo root, I rooted ages ago and it made my desire complete. So many roms to choose from, more options with regards to theming and stuff, of course a2sd+ which is gonna be better than the official froyo implementation for some time (especially now the silly sd corruption stuff got fixed), but also some handy apps like setcpu and titanium backup.

I was worried about rooting but it gets easier and easier and more reliable. Im so glad I did now, especially with the new features on the desire hd/desire z. HTC might choose not to release any of this for our standard desires, but some/most of it will make it into custom roms (paul @ modaco is already looking at this for his latest rom and Im sure others are too).
 
It's almost impossible to brick the Desire because of its security (certain areas cannot be changed even with root). No matter how bad the situation you can recover with an RUU, though that may need a goldcard.

A2SD+ will work on any rooted rom, regardless of android version. A2SD is a feature of froyo.

Just to mix it up a bit, some Kernels undervolt, which means it can run at the same speed using less battery, or at a faster speed using the same battery.

The original version, now called a2sd+ is a hack. Many custom roms include it and some rooting guides tell you how to install it as an extra.

Google recognised the error of their ways, and decided to create a2sd on froyo, however its not as good.
