Help File manager - long loading times for /sdcard dir

Whenever I access either /sdcard or /mnt/sdcard directories in file manager programs, the system takes about 30 secs to display the contents. Every other directory loads instantly.

Has anyone had this issue before? Any suggestions for a fix would be appreciated.

Thanks

Are there any "critical" system files on the sd_card or are they all on the 2Gb (or so) internal partition?

I was just wondering if it is enough just to copy all files on the sd_card out to PC, reformat, then paste back in. Are there are any hidden files/folders on sd_card that windows would miss in the initial copy even if hidden+system files are set in your windows explorer options?

I've done a shed load of copying/deleting on the sd_card (multiple cwm backups for example) but as yet, I dont get any lag within this filesystem.

The only thing I have noticed using ES File Explorer is that even with the system settings to the contrary, it will not show the contents that exist on the SD card under the hidden folder .android_secur, to copy these you have to mount the phone on the desktop and view, backup etc,

It pays to routinely mount the phone/card using USB utilities not the MTP application, and then run dignostics on the card to check for errors, drive, right click properties, error checking in windows!

I also put them through a defrag once in a while too

That's not such a good idea, tbh. Each 'cell' in a flash memory chip has a finite number of write cycles. Defrag routines will write to the same cells multiple times as they arrange and rearrange data blocks in an attempt to make the files contiguous. Any wear-levelling done by the controller is thus negated.

File fragmentation is not nearly so much an issue with solid-state storage, as the access time is constant no matter where on the 'disk' the data resides.

I am having trouble as well. The SD card I have is 64GB and it takes forever to read from the device. Once the folders show up though, then I can go thru them, but every now and then it freezes. I have all my music on there. Do I have to use 16GB cards instead to speed up the load time? But then I'll have 4 cards instead of 1 which would be nicer. I've formatted it to fat32. Thanks!
