Well this has been an adventure. I was having problems with corporate Sync email and the word was they would be solved by upping to GB. I had stayed at Froyo by renaming the updater APK. By reading here I chose to do the rooted stock GB, "something for everyone."
Downloaded installed as per instructions and reboot, red "M" logo, JOY! Not so fast it just stayed there. This is my work phone for field service, I'm boned. I had to fire up the "clone phone."
Downloaded the wonderful Linux boot cd and sbf'd back to froyo and tried again. success!!! Even got the wifi tether to work. I rarely use this and I'm aware of the controversy but it is a nice tool for this Swiss Army Knife of phones, no flames please...
What I learned. Maybe it got stuck because I still had the updater apk renamed to bak. I also learned by surprise that ALL my data was still there as I never cleared data or cache, amazing. The last thing I had to do was again rename the updater as stock GB still wanted to update. Again thanks to all who have and continue to contribute here. For someone who is willing to read and experiment, you make this almost too easy.
Thanks again,
