Finally rooted my HTC Hero

After weeks of searching i finally rooted my HTC Hero with Z4Root (mad i didn't hear of it sooner). What are my next steps as far as flashing a recovery, a custom kernal and rom and a CPU tweaker so i can get the most of this. I have an EVO but i'm thinking of either selling the Hero or giving it to my g/f. Please help a root noob rooted 2 phones 1st had the recovery auto installed.

Download rom manager from the market

Flash clockworkmod recovery(make sure it says CDMA Hero)

Once you successfully flashed the recovery, make a nandroid.

Decide what rom you want, and then boot to recovery, wipe data, cache and dalvik cache

Go to install zip from sd card and flash the rom

If flashing an AOSP rom, make sure you flash the gapps zip file after flashing the rom

If flashing a sense rom, no need to flash anything else

Reboot phone and sign into google account

Set up phone and then you are goog to go:D

Flashing a kernel: Nandroid;) Boot to recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache. Then flash the kernel. Reboot phone

Overclocking: Try setcpu or oc widget. Set you frequencies to your liking;)

BTW, if you plan on selling the phone or giving it to your G/F, then it is best to have the phone stock and unrooted, to transfer;)

so i'm not spamming questions is there steps to how i flash Clockwork Recovery and make a nandroid back up?

At the top of the screen in rom manager, 'flash clockworkmod recovery v2.5.0.1' This is the recovery image

Then boot to recovery and make a nandroid of your stock rom, just in case.

Then you are good to flash roms

thanks bro figured it out right before you answered i still have Z4Root so i can un root the phone when i give it to my girl right now just experimenting B4 I mess with my Evo

For clarification the purpose of the nandroid is a backup of the current rom incase i want to swap roms so i'm not SOL if don't like the new rom I install?

Yep, a nandroid is an exact mirror of your phone when you make the nandroid. So..... if you want to flash something new, a kernel or a new rom or a new theme, then if you don't like what you've done, then you nandroid restore back to the way your phone was before flashing.

what does it mean when it says
"no sd-ext found. skipping back up of sd-ext."
"Generating md5 sum...?"
Ran into that when making my nandroid.

If you didn't partition your SD Card for apps 2 sd, you will see this. Btw, apps 2 sd in froyo roms is native.

MD5 has to match up for your nandroid to restore. If you happen to get a mismatch, you will not be able to restore.

well time to back up my files before i make those partitions

Or download roms directly to your phone, which, imo, is the easiest way. Once downloaded, they will be in your downloads folder on your sd card

There's shit all for roms besides the nightlies. How unstable/broken are they? I bought the premium Rom Manager and there wasn't much in the way of Roms for my HTC hero istalled one of the nightlies and decided to switch back was a pain seeing as my track ball is defective.

The nightlies are still nightlies, things may be broken but for my money the nightlies have always been better than the stable versions for the CM6;)

To be honest, you do not need to use the trackball. Download any rom that you want, then go to 'install rom from sd card' in the rom manager app. The zip should be in your downloads folder. Hit the zip you want to flash and rom manger should do the rest. But beware, if you flash a AOSP rom, make sure flash the gapps too

Nice thread. I have a rooted HTC HERO and I am loving it. I'm messing with overclocking and setcpu now to find just the right setting for me. I'll never not root an android phone. Prob gonna get the EVO in the fall.
