Root Firmware too new?

yes you can, but flashing a rom is pretty easy and mikg is waaaay better then stock. plus you have to be careful on what you delete. i guarantee you that you will love mikg. it is much faster and smoother then stock plus it has all of the bloatware removed and it has the sprint's hotspot hacked so you can tether for free.

but if you want to stay on stock then you need to flash the su file found in the guide. to give you permission to delete or alter the system files. otherwise you will not be able to delete the bloatware on your phone. so either way you will need to flash something.

and recovery is what you just installed and used to make a nandroid backup. by press and holding power+vol down and then selecting recovery, you are going into amon ra which is your recovery. recovery is where the magic happens. it is where you flash roms, kernels, and mods or themes on your phone. it is also where you make nandroid backups which is a snapshot of your phone's current state. nandroid backups are great for if something goes wrong or you hate the rom you are on you can always go back and restore one of your backups.

and the nandroid backup should stay on your card for now.

so it will be up to you if you want to try mikg or not. if you want to stay on stock that is fine. either way i can help you if you want.
So you're not big on Cyanogen?

If I go to flash the SU file, do I have to reformat my SD card, which would delete that backup I made right? Or is the reformatting optional?

Should I regularily make a backup?

If I wanted to check right now, how would I know if I am rooted? By flashing that superuser file?

Dude, thanks a ton for your help, I sincerely appreciate it. You've been super patient - very awesome.

no worries, i was in your shoes when i first rooted and this forum was able to help me out. so i'm just paying it forward.

the su file is just a file and there is no need to reformat your card. the only reason you might want to do that is if your card is acting weird.

just download the su file and transfer it to your card, no folders. in recovery select install zip from sdcard. navigate to your su file by using the vol up and down buttons and selecting it with the power button. once it is flashed then reboot your phone.

on your phone i would recommend that you get titanium backup(free) and also get the titanium pro key(paid). this is an essential app to have when you are rooted. with the app you can then start freezing the bloatware you do not want. the reason you want to freeze it is because you want to make sure that your phone will not go crazy after you freeze them. if it does start to act up then you can just unfreeze them. and once you know that your phone is fine then you can use tb to delete the file.

also titanium backup is great for backing up all of your apps and its data so that if and when you flash a rom you can use tb to restore the apps and its data.

and as far as making nandroid backups. no you do not have to do it regularly. one thing though i forgot to mention you might want to make another one and make sure that you have wimax checked as well. you want that backed up and saved on your computer. it is possible though rare to loose your wimax keys and then you will not have 4g and it will be gone for good unless you have a nandroid backup of it.

Ok. Now, can I go back to clockwork recovery?

What do I move if I want to save that nandroid to my computer?

Do I want to get Titanium backup before I flash a rom?

ok you have amon ra recovery vs clockwork mod. amon ra is a much better recovery then clockwork mod. plus with clockwork mod you are only able to flash certain things. with amon ra you do not have to worry on what you can or can't flash because it is compatible with all flashable zip files.

on your card amon ra saves the nandroid backups in a folder called nandroids. the next folder should be HT0CVHL01139. inside that folder should your nandroid backup file and it should be name something like BDS-20111211-0501 that is your nanadroid backup and that is what you should move to your computer.

for me i also have a dropbox account and i have my very first nandroid backup ever saved on the cloud there. just an idea, cuase you never know what may happen to your computer. if it is on the cloud that file is safe. just an fyi.

yes get tb before you flash another rom. that way you can backup your apps now.

uhhhhh...my superuser app is completely empty....should I be able to see apps to delete in
here?

Also, I don't know if this is related to the weird way my phone was - but I can;t seem to get updates for apps. I have at least a dozen apps sitting with downloads needed and the slanted lines, but not updating. Any idea what the problem is there?

My hboot still says 2.16. Should it?

your hboot should be fine with your phone as it is now. unrooting it might be more difficult. but i think that since you have s-off and with a custom recovery there is no need to change your hboot. but if you want to see if we can change it then we can try. but it will mean that we will have to unroot you first then re-root your phone.

not sure on your apps though. if you want you can go into recovery and wipe dalvik cache and cache and see if that helps.

and your su will be empty until you run some root only apps like tb.

If we unroot, would it be cleaner? It seems like we had to kind of back in this way. Would I get a cleaner more standard root? I would strongly prefer that. Let me know and I'll pick this thread back up tomorrow, if you're willing to continue working with me.

The only thing with super user is that I'm not confused on how I would get to uninstalling bloatware, I figured I'd get a list to uninstall. Where would I do that?

Maybe we just flash Cyanogen mod?

Thanks again. I really appreciate this.

no worries.

not necessarily. you have all of the essentials to be rooted and it should not in anyway affect your phone or flashing of roms. where it gets sticky is trying to unroot your phone. not really knowing how the phone got to this state may make it more difficult to get s-on again. right now your phone is rooted and you can flash and change your phone anyway you want to. so i will leave that decision up to you.

and with cm7 as is with every other aosp rom, it will take more tweeking then people are used to with sense. you will need to flash the rom, then flash the gapps file (this file is where you get all of the google apps like the market or gmail.) also you may need to flash the qualcomm drivers to get your gos fixed. not sure why but most aosp roms have the gps where the signal is slightly off so you might need to do that as well. plus you will have to get used to launchers like adw(which comes with cm7) or go launcher( my fav). plus there is no sense launchers. but if you are willing to go for it then we can go ahead and do that. aosp roms are small and very fast. plus for me they give the best battery life, but they do take more work then some are willing to do.

edit: by the way i love cm7. and if you combo that with the tiamat sbc kernel, i can get easily 18-30 hrs off charge with moderate to heavy usage. it is definitely one of my fav roms for sure.

I'd love to do that. I'd guess I'm going to spend most of my day tomorrow jacking around with my phone, thinking up more stupid questions. I'll be back with them tomorrow evening, if you're available, maybe you'd be willing to help acclimate me to the CM7 idea?

As of now, and I'll grab your reply tomorrow morning, how can I confirm that everything is in order with my root, etc? Any type of checklist I should go through.

I figured out a way to force all of those pending updates, btw.

well to be rooted requires several things:
1.do you have s-off........check
2.do you have nand unlocked...........check(that is what the superuser app does)
3.do you have a custom recovery..........check(you have amon ra)

so looks like you are rooted and good to go with flashing cm7 tomorrow.

but i would get thing setup ahead of time so download cm7 here:
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get/update-cm-7.1.0-Supersonic-signed.zip

and get the gapps file here (this gapps is cool because it has sprint's vvm cooked in):
gapps-modified-vvm-20110828.zip

download those now so that you are ready to go tomorrow.

Good deal.

Related - I got Titanium Backup - but it doesn't want to work. I have BusyBox installed now and the USB is set to debug. Thoughts?

Nevermind, got it to work. Everything is coming up Milhouse.
