FIRMWARE UPDATE! wtf does it doooo?

Ya did that to my apps as well. No idea what that was all about.

IMAG0071.jpg

This is ICS optimizing your apps to ICS. This will probably happen after each update

Ok.. I did the firmware update yesterday, and am at 9.4.2.11 per my screenshot, but Asus website shows 9.4.2.7 ... which is a higher number....?

.7 would be the most recent update

After performing my update, one thing I saw right off the bat was the blue dot in maps, for my location, was spot on, within 20m. Whereas before the update, I never saw the blue dot in maps. Plus my wifi was getting 2-3 bars, after update, consistently 3-4 bars but I wasn't having any issues with wifi before so I'm sure this was nothing different

It is commendable if they are in fact working to improve GPS/Wifi through software updates. However, wouldnt they want to just let us know so we stop bitching and worrying about it?

A simple "We are working on enhancing the software to see if some known issues can be resolved, please be patient"

I believe that it would be in their best interests not to say that updates are coming.

I'm sure they know customers are dissatisfied with the gps problem but I'm guessing that they're working diligently to improve the issue. Whether or not the device becomes a full fledged gps navigational unit, I've always felt it could be just as much a software/kernel issue as it is a design flaw and these updates could improve things. Unfortunately, we will have to wait and see but fortunately, so far, things are improving

That's what I would have thought ... but, then why did my Build Version go from .7 to .11, while my GPS goes from 6.8.13 to 6.9.13 with yesterday's OTA?

See my screenshots above...?

Went back through all my screenshots.

Build 8.8.3.29 - 2011-12-02

Build 8.8.3.33 - 2011-12-23

Build 9.4.2.7 - 2012-01-06

Build 9.4.2.11 - 2012-01-17

So... .11 is the most recently released... not sure if it should have had a higher build number... we shall see.. heh

EDIT AGAIN ... I downloaded the 9.4.2.7 that is dated 1/17 on Asus' website. Inside, there is another .ZIP file - dated 2012-01-06. It appears they post the previous build when releasing new one OTA....

But the question remains - why did the build number GO DOWN?

How refreshing...a company that actually makes progress in improving their product frequently (learning something, Samsung?? - I have the Epic 4G...and they take FOREVER)!!

@EasyEEE

The build number did not go down. Think of the periods not as decimal points, but as delimiters to different elements of the build number. The first number usually represents the major version number, the second the minor version number, and the last two could have any significance that asus developers have given them, with the last usually being the revision number.

Again, think of each part between the periods as it's own element and the periods as nothing more than a way to separate these elements.

i too have a epic 4g, and saying they take forever is an understatement. sadly, i think we are done with updates, especially since sprint is going to lte now. hoping that they offer a 4lte phone in the fall that has a slide out keyboard like the 4g.

Yep, that's what I'm waitin for. But Samsung still has no excuse whatsoever for their slowness, they should have skipped GB and just prepared and ICS update instead.

In other words, 11 is bigger than 7.

rumor is the epic 4g doesn't have enough ram to support their UI and ics. i wish i had got the htc evo slide, but let the bigger screen and faster processor sway me.

maybe if it has been .07 and .11 it wouldn't be so confusing.
True, but then you have to predict how many versions you are going to have. Will it be in the single digits? Tens? Hundreds? Thousands? And since it isn't confusing at all for most people who look at version numbers, it isn't worth trying to predict.

And the reason I will never buy ANY Samsung product ever again. There after purchase support is horrible. They are always 6-12 months behind everyone else. Mark my words, they will launch their "flagship" phone this summer with GB while everyone else is launching with ICS. The will get that same phone up to ICS about 6 months after launch while the Nexus(and other phones following shortly thereafter) will have already launched with the next version. Samsung is just too big of a company to worry about a measly little phone with a narrow profit margin.

Back on topic....I really don't think my wifi performance was all that bad before the update and I think it has diminished since the update. I am not basing this on signal strength, just general usage experinces.

the update last night or the ics update. i was thinking the same after the ics update, but felt like last night when i was using it for a long period it was better than ever.

I am not sure if this has been brought up but the update last night also changed my kernel.

I forgot where I wrote all the old info last night...but my previous kernel was....

Android@divine#1 [something like that]

After last nights upgrade it went to.....

Android@MiuiMiui#1

Sorry if I am stating the obvious. And I dont know how much of a difference the new kernel has made, but my primes browser seems even better.

Mine just started:

Have to say I'm a little nervous since nothing at all has been wrong with my TP as of yet.

The new kernel proves that they're trying to find a solution to the gps issues so I wouldn't be surprised to see a different kernel for the next update.

I hope it's not miui:p

It is ashamed but I feel the same way when I do every update. ICS was a nice addition though. You agree?

You don't like the Miui rom? I loved it on my Evo, although I am running CM7 now. Too Apple like for ya.

Miui is fine, looks alot like the iPhone but too many issues with the updates.

CM7 is history:p Have you tried any of the recent ICS builds? There's now 4 different ICS builds for the Evo 4G and they're almost all a daily driver. Worth a flash, imo;) I'm running preludedrew's p6 build from this morning and it's pretty stable. FFC is about the only thing not working

So far so good. I was at 2-3 wifi bars before, now it's a 3-4 consistently. I haven't seen an issue with GPS, it locks right on to me in Maps... don't plan on using this for navigation so I might not ever know if that works or not ;)
