Root First compcache rom?

For the 4.2 you need to copy the II5 tar to your sdcard, and make sure to name it II5.tar. You should check out the new instructions over at hdblog.it

Yeah, I'd started with your list of instructions and then found they'd created a new recovery (0.42) with new instructions..

A) Backup your current system

1) Flash the latest recovery (see UPDATE 14/10 - V4.1! - ROOT/RECOVERY IMAGE update, wipe, backup and restore GALAXY - HDblog - Forum)
2) Boot in recovery mode
3) Use nandroid backup to make a backup of your current system

B) Flash with Galaxo or GalaxHero

You must flashing the I5 using Orion BEFORE flashing with Galaxo/GalaxHero to backup google apps. Next flash don't need I5, since google apps are already backuped. Google apps'version need to be the same as the base rom.

1) Flash the latest recovery (see UPDATE 14/10 - V4.1! - ROOT/RECOVERY IMAGE update, wipe, backup and restore GALAXY - HDblog - Forum)
2) Reboot in recovery
3) Push the update.zip (Galaxo or GalaxHero) on your internal sdcard (adb push update.zip /sdcard/update.zip)
4) Push the official II5 update on the sdcard renamed as II5.tar on your internal sdcard (adb push YOURII5UPDATE/sdcard/II5.tar)
4) Reboot another time in recovery
5) Wipe using the recovery
6) Flash the update using the recovery
7) Restore Gapps using the recovery
8) Reboot
9) Enjoy

It can take a little while. The first time round of doing it I did find it got stuck on the "Android" part and seemed like the flashing of the letters got stuck for a moment and then continued, doing this over and over again in a loop. The next time round it took a while on the first boot but eventually loaded.

Okay, I forgot the restore the g.apps. Idiot!

The new ROM is loaded now.

Can I use the HTC keyboard with this ROM?

I installed the GalaxHero rom the other day but I've only just received my class6 sd card.

I've used the "format external sd as fat32 and swap" option from the recovery mode, is there anything else I need to do to get it to use the swap partition or should it just auto detect and start using it?

enable compcache

Compcache is OFF by default. Check Galaxo Config app to turn it on.

Compcache compresses to RAM and doesnt use any SD card at all. If it finds a swap partition on your EXTERNAL sdcard as partition 2 (i.e. second partition) then it uses that as a secondary swap. So real memory, compressed memory (compcache), sdcard swap. In that order.

You can to a adb shell and type free to see whats going on, or cat /proc/ramswap0 (err forgot the exact name of it, do an ls /proc to check) to check compcache status

Ok.

Can someone translate the Ital-glish instructions into English for me?

I'm assuming at the moment that this II5.tar that everyone refers to is actually a renamed version of the rectools.tar that comes in the 0.4.2 recovery download? Hence, it just gets renamed II5.tar, sits alongside the EXISTING (0.4.1) rectools.tar on the SDCard, and then you just install the recovery.img from the new zip file?

Is that correct?

At that point, you do a G.apps backup, factory reset, install the update.zip, restore g.apps, and you're away?

As best as I can make out, this is the case, but this also means we don't need to flash to II5 with Odin before applying GalaxHero?

ii5.tar is a renamed version of the ii5 handheld firmware i7500xxii5 that is used with odin
you reflash the recovery to 4.2 and replacing rectools with the one from 4.2
there isnt an option to backup gapps anymore. you just apply update.zip and restore gapps (recovery locates the gapps from ii5.tar that you pushed via ADB)

Ah-hah. So you still need to Odin flsh to II5, but the g.apps thing is sorted.

Gotcha.

Ok - here's one for all you geniuses out there.

I've been through the process of flashing the GalaxHero ROM.

I installed Recovery 0.4.2 on the phone that was already on the II5 firmware, albeit with the German CSC that I forgot to remove. It worked.

I performed a factory reset on the phone through the v.0.4.2 recovery. This worked too.

I reflashed the phone through Odin after removing the CSC - this went fine.

I rebooted the phone which still works, no bother. I tried to reboot into recovery mode, and the phone throw up the 'RECOVERY MODE......' message, shows it for about 10-12 seconds, then apparently reboots and carries on booting normally.

I've tried pushing the 0.4.2 recovery again, with no joy. I'm about to try putting the 0.4.1 recovery back on to see if that works.

Ideas, assuming my plan fails?

Cheers.

Ok, scratch that.

Even though I repeatedly tried to reflash the recovery image and it didn't work previously, i just tried it again and it worked fine.

Stupid bloody thing.

why did you flash odin without the csc once you already had ii5 and the recover on there? it doesnt matter if you have the csc version or not.

when you reflash it reverts the recovery version back to samsung android stock so youll need to flash recovery again and then push the rectools but remember to flash recovery in fastboot first before pushing them.

i dont understand why you added this additional step, there was no need imo

EDIT, i see youve updated

I reflashed without the CSC as I wanted to get rid of some of the German specific programs, and because I figured a full clean install would help things go more smoothly.

I figured that might be the case - the recovery image being overwritten with some standardised piece of crap that's no use to anyone, so I tried putting the 0.4.2 image back on as soon as it didn't work the first time, but I didn't get anywhere with it. Bizarrely, it worked as soon as I flashed the 0.4.1 recovery image, which I subsequently updated to the 0.4.2 one with no problems.

Once I'd gotten all this sorted out, I applied the update.zip from the SDCard, restored the Google Apps, and let it reboot. It took ages to reboot - longer than it should really. I left it for a full 45 minutes on the second of the 'Android' screens (the one with the text, but not the green robot logo), and it just seemed to be hanging.

Solution: Back to recovery, full factory reset, reflash Update.zip, re-recover the Google apps, reboot. Sorted.

So I'm all back up and running at the point, but now for some reason, the phone only seems to pick up a HSDPA signal - the [H] icon is the only one I get. Any ideas what happened to the 3G?

Everything is working, and it's pulling down data from Googlemail, Android Market etc. with no problems, just seemingly not over 3G.

dont worry about that. hsdpa and 3g are one in the same, you could call it 3.5g its just high speed 3g.
all thats happened is that theyve changed the 3g icon with an h icon.
3g iocon is kinda wrong anyway as it never went to H in 3.5 g area's

Yes it does. Its exactly how I'm using it. Without compcache enabled it will not look for the swap

Well unfortunately I've turned compcache off now. Performance just seem more sluggish with it enabled (when exiting apps and going back to the home screen for example)... more concerning though, for the first time ever, I got several random reboots when just downloading things from the market.
