First night's troubles and quirks

Alrighty. So I quickly opened up the box I got from Fedex this afternoon and slapped the battery in but didn't turn it on.

What I did was, Turn off my (now old) VM phone (The samsung intercept). So my Evo and Intercept were both off.
I went to the VM site and did the swap phone process.
It took about 2 minutes for the page to load then it told me to reset my Intercept.
So I turned on the intercept and reset it. Then I turned it back off.
I then turned on the HTC Evo and it immediately tried to do the hands free activation. It failed, because it would not connect via 3G (same problem with my Intercept).

Problem #1 - Activation.

I let it sit for a bit while fiddling around with it for 10 minutes. Then I pulled the battery, and turned it on again. Then it did the activation for about 3 minutes and eureka!, it self activated!

Then I went to work quickly. For my job, I drive around a lot, and go to random locations (I'm a pizza delivery guy :D) so I heavily rely on the navigation app.

So, problem #2 - Cell tower handoff
Whenever my phone is handed-off to another tower, the cell signal goes completely dead and shows (no service). Cell service quickly returned about 30 seconds later, however, Only 1x instead of 3G appeared. And it refused to even utilize the 1x. I tried to use the navigation and I kept getting some SMS Error code (Which was odd.. I wasn't texting at the time..).

The phone then decided to halt and reboot. I was a bit irritated, because my phone was only 2 hours old and this was the first big problem.

But then, I'm not sure if I just never connected to another tower, but it never did that for the rest of the evening.. the handoff issue that is.

Problem #3 - Speakerphone volume

The speakerphone (and loudspeaker) volume is very weak. I was trying to hear the navigation directings and I had the media volume all the way up and I could barely hear it. Not a big issue, and I know there is a fix for that via Root and some software mumbo-jumbo i'll probably do later.

Problem #4 - Random Error messages (may be localized).

Then after work was done, I was texting a bit and kept getting random error messages on outgoing messages (but this happened on my intercept, I kept getting little red (!) on random texts, so I think it is a localized tower routing problem. And even though I got these errors, the texts always went through.. so I don't worry about it.

That's about it. And that's only around 7 hours usage today. Oh and the battery is fantastic as far as I can tell.. but it hasnt really been broken in yet so I may follow up later on this.

Any questions or anything, just leave a reply and I'll probably answer them all.

I'm hoping that these issues are just due to the phone being flashed from sprint. Seems like that could be the issue. I'll have to see how it goes when I get my pre-order from BB if it's a true VM edition

I've had my EVO V 4G since Saturday and it's been smooth sailing so far. Activation took a few hours but went without too many hiccups.

I haven't had any issue with cell tower pass off yet and I travel a 30 mile radius every day. I've also noticed that the speaker phone volume is fairly low but then occasionally gets louder but as you said, there are other fixes out there for that.

I have been getting random error messages about resources and while sending texts as well but I haven't had any issues with text messages not sending. I think it's just VM working out some of the kinks on the 4G network and will probably go away in the future.

I've gotten 4MB down on 4G with one bar of signal for 4G which is still really nice. So far I'm loving the EVO and it's a huge improvement over every other phone VM and Boost have in their lineup currently.

It could be because I updated my PRL prior to these issues happening, but after it updated, it worked fine until I left the area and drove a bit into another town and got handed-off to another tower. I'm not sure. Like I said, ill follow up later.

What PRL do you have? Mine is 61008...

Mine is running 61008 as well.

Looks like VM did an update over the standard Sprint PRL though... When I got my first phone today that wouldn't activate (long story) it showed 61007, that is without activation. The one I got that did activate ran through a PRL update right at the time it first synced up and now shows 61008.

Most likely 61008 just adds 4g towers to VM phones. The site BatonRougeBroadband.Info - Home keeps up with Sprint's PRL's and will probably get the 61008 analyzed soon.

i did my phone swap no problem today,i think you "reset" the wrong phone... when i "reset".. i did it to the EVO not my MT....

My quirks:

1) Phone rebooted by itself about 4 times. It rebooted both in and out of 3G/4G and airplane mode.

2) It would not shut off. I'd select power off and the phone would power itself back on.

3) Once I finally got it to turn off, It wouldn't turn back in this morning until I pulled battery. I was kinda freaking out to be honest.

Weird quirks but honestly I think it's because in essence all of us have "flashed" phones. Hmm....

I'm getting worried now I might hold out until all stock for Sprint has run out.

That wouldn't be a bad idea. A lot of us got impatient and rushed to get our phones. Don't get me wrong, I love this phone. I'm just saying that the next batch is coming. Hopefully those aren't just flashed Evo 3D'S too.

They released the newly manufactured ones from customs already. The ones in store after the 10th will likely contain these.

I won't return mine. ROMS are coming. For me It's a simple fix because it's just minor software issues. Even HTC may send fixes. They do ask me to send reports after unusual occurrences. =]

All in all though, I'm satisfied knowing this phone was made well. It's sturdy, fast, and responds instantly.

I'm sorry, I was speaking in dealer terms.
It means that it was reprogrammed to work with a different carrier than the original software that was installed.

Awesome! I bet you can't wait.!

Also, my error with reboots is caused by HTC_shooter? Hmm.

I'm also getting error code 64 class 2 a lot...
not sure. It says SM but it happens when I hadn't been using SMS for a few hours..

Isn't HTC SHOOTER the codename of the CDMA Evo3D? Not that that helps or anything...

I had an issue the 1st day too with activation. No matter what I did it would not activate. So I called VM and had them put me straight thru to tech support. Very nice guy named Oscar asked me to turn off the phone, take out the battery and hold down the power button for 15 seconds. Turned it back on and it programmed itself in about 2 min. Phone call lasted about 5 min. Very important to go straight thru to tech support. Customer service will try and have you do the ##virgin# code, and it DOES NOT WORK! Now I'm enjoying the hell outta my new beast of a phone.

Just a follow up to everyone:
The phone worked perfect today. No issues. Reboots. Errors. nothing.
Little lag between switching towers still, but only about 10 seconds this time until data was restored.

Battery is a little on the short side, but I couldn't set this thing down so maybe that's it. I'm not sure.

Very satisfied. If anything, ill buy an extended battery. The tower issue could be localized. But otherwise I'll just have to live with it.

Phone calls and SMS messages are both carried by on 1XRTT. 3G and 4G carry data only and are only accessed when you are doing something like using the web browser or checking e-mail (or using any other app that pulls info from the Internet).

The problems are most likely on VM's side and are not related to a problem with the handsets. Like you said, the problems probably will go away in the future. VM typically has these kinds of problems whenever they release a new handset and has always managed to get things straightened out eventually.

When anyone runs into these types of things, be sure to call in and report it to VM Customer Care. They need the trouble reports in the system so they can track the problem, figure out the problem's root cause(s) and fix it. The more information they have, the easier it is for them to figure it out.
