Root First rom flash. Opinions please

So I have decided to take the plunge and try a custom rom. On some advice from a friend I downloaded rom manager and did a backup from there. What I would like is a rom with better battery life, fully functioning 4g, Bluetooth and gps. On top of this I would really like to keep sense in tack seeing as I HATE the standard dialer on android.

On the friend advice I was going to try and download one through rom manager. From the research I have been doing it seems like the best choices would be fresh or myn. I was wondering what you all think?

Also is doing this through rom manager an ok and easy way to do this? I assume that it would have the latest versions available. Do I just download the rom and it installs?

Thanks in advance.

I would definitely try Myn's or Fresh like you mentioned, both are very fast and stable ROMS with good battery life w/ the stock kernel.

ROM Manager is very user friendly, so I would recommend you use that to download either Myn's or Fresh for your first custom ROM flash, however, when you get used to flashing, customizing, and navigating through recovery, I would recommend using Amon RA as your recovery over Clockwork (you can flash RA through ROM Manager). It's just a better overall recovery. Hope this helps and let us know how it goes!

Fresh and Myn are pretty popular around here... You wont go wrong with either one! Now as far as Rom Manager, unless you are on WIFI I wouldn't download a rom through Rom Manager. (Thats just me though). But as far as installing the rom, rom manager makes it pretty darn painless. No to install, click the option in RM to install/flash a rom, and make sure you selct the options to wipe. Then let it do its thing... Hope this helps a little!

Thanks for the quick reply! I am not really understanding the whole kernel thing yet. Keep thinking why all the talk about fried chicken? I'm sure I will figure it out eventually lol.

Hopefully a few others will chime in soon and give some opinion on which is the better rom with sense. Also is there an easy way to confirm the one you are downloading from rom manager is the latest version. For fresh it has fresh evo 3.4.0.1 and for myn it has warm twopointtwo rls 4.

Fresh 3.5 is currently out (for donators only but will be out very soon for non-donators) and Myn's 2.2 RLS4 is the latest version for Myn.

Actually does. I was not aware I had to do the wipe option first. Thanks! Is there a painless way to back up my apps and email settings and suck or just as easy to reload them all manually ?

If you'd like to know what version a particular rom is at, find the actual xda post for from this list:

HTC Supersonic/ROMs - XDA-Developers

If you see any rom based on the 3.70 sw version, you will need to flash the new radio, etc. found here:

[ Radios ][ 12-17 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers

ROM manager is great at first, but you'll need to get used to going to recovery directly.

also check out the multiple threads that answer you question of opinions on ROM choice...most of which have been pushed to the second page of this forum.

personally I have enjoyed the Fresh Rom's and currently am running the Myn's Rom.

Hmmm that made me nervous. Anyone know if the latest myn has to have the radio update?

It most likely will with RLS5, but it doesn't with the current RLS4. That's assuming myn updates to 3.70 with RLS5, which I believe he said he will.

No it doesn't.

Frenchy - Do you know if Fresh needs the radio update. I think the ROM thing is enough for me for now and want to avoid the whole radio situation. I think I like myn for the most part. Getting used to the launcher and the whole slide up when a screen is changing is going to be the thing that may prevent me loving it (and we will see how the battery life is). Thinking I may want to try Fresh I figured I would ask ahead of time about the radio thing.

Thanks for all your help.

If you're going to flash a custom ROM running with the 3.70 build, you'll need to update your radio.

A huge factor in what kind of battery life you'll experience with the ROM is dependent on what kernel you're running with it. I would first try the kernels recommended by the dev of the ROM you're running. Check this out and look under the recommended kernels section:

Myn's Warm 2.2 Making Sense of it All

Flashing a kernel is easy, refer to this to get you started on that:

Rooting for Dummies + Extras/Section 8 Flashing Kernels

LOL I was reading that when you responded. I was trying to make sense of all the extra stuff and how to add it. I think what I do is flash them from the extra section of the memory card. The one thing I can not figure out is I downloaded the Themed LauncherPro 0.8.1.1 for Warm TwoPointTwo and the one on my screen does not look like that one. I would love for it to have the phone, people, text and web part. Instead it is just a circle with a diamond in it the pull up section and a circle with dots in it (seems to be controlled by something called Rosie settings). I even tried downloading it direct to my sd card and flashing the zip and it still looks the same. If you have any idea on this I swear I will leave you alone!

Thanks

Download homeswitcher from App Market, run it, and you should see that you have a choice between Launcher Pro or Sense; your default launcher is sense. You'll have to clear your default launcher by pressing "clear default" at the bottom, then it'll take you to an "application info" screen, scroll to the bottom and hit "clear default" again. Then hit the back button and hit the launch button for Launcher Pro. I would recommend watching this to get the hang of configuring your launcher:

Launcher Pro walkthrough video

To make Launcher Pro your default launcher, hit the "home" button on your EVO and a pop up screen will come up asking which launcher you'd like to make as your home default. Check the box at the bottom, then choose launcher pro.

When flashing Myn's Warm, it gave you optional add-ons, Launcher Pro being one of them....Did you check that box??
If you're not sure, go to settings<applications<manage applications and see if you see Launcher Pro in that list.

Wow thanks again! I did check and download that (thinking it may be cool). I see it when I go into manage my applications. Messing around last night I downloaded and flashed this xda-developers - View Single Post - [ROM] Myn
