First time rooting.. need steps.

Okay so I'm sorry about starting another thread on this, but it seems like every case can be different, and no one wants to brick their phone.. soo.. I'm hoping for some steps to help me fix my Hero issues.

First of all will rooting help these issues: For one the phone is terribly slow these days. Takes a while for any app to load or even. Also about 80% of the time I exit an app by using the home button I get the white screen saying HTC and then the loading circle which takes about a minute before I can use the phone again.

I'm starting to understand rooting somewhat, and am considered using the z4root app but I don't really know where to go after that.

Everyone throws out words such as rom, flash, overclock.. and then points people to other root threads but none of them actually explain this stuff. Telling me to 'flash the bootrom blah blah blah' is confusing to me, which is sad because I am good with computers and can usually figure this stuff out.

If anyone is willing to take a bit of time to help it would be appreciated.. Unless there is another good step by step thread that I haven't found (as in what to press on my phone or do on the computer?)

You can check out that video on what to do after u root...it shows u how to install a rom and how to back up a rom which is called a nandroid back up....theres other videos on youtube u can search and are very helpful as they were to me when i was new to rooting and flashing roms and such

Maybe this stuff is just over my head.. all of the threads talk about it like I should know how to do all of the stuff, which I don't. Even the second thread you mentioned has some good steps but I don't know which parts to do on my computer and which to do on the phone itself.

Also do I need to go download Z4root from my computer and then put it on my phone?

I would really like to figure this out so if I do get a new phone in a few months I can do it easier if I want.

I guess it's hard for you guys to see this stuff as confusing because you understand it so well, but for me these threads don't seem to make things clear.

None of it is done on your computer all you need is your phone.
1. Download z4root with your phone.
2. Once you have it downloaded goto the market and download a file manager(astro or es file expolrer).
3. Open the file manager
4. Find the download folder in the file manager open it and select z4root
5. Then install it.
6. Goto to your apps and open z4root and choose permanent root(It will go through its thing and say rebooting. If it does not reboot simply power off and go to your apps and see if it installed the app superuser. If not run z4root again until it installs superuser)
7. Once you have super user goto the market and download rom manager
8. Open rom manager, allow superuser when prompted
9. The top of that app will be flash clockmod recovery, press it
10. Once it says it was succesfully flashed, choose to reboot to recovery.
11. Once in recovery scroll down to backup/restore click the trackball
12.Now click backup, this will make a nandroid of your current setup ****very important*****
13. Now go back and reboot your phone and it will be just as you left it.
Now you are ready to flash a rom let me know when you get this far and we can help you get ready to do that.

Ditto and if you want to make your life one step easier, also download from the market App Installer, then you open that and it will find all your APK's and allow you to install which one you want without have to find your download folder

You will be fine, simply open and root, if it hangs after 10 minutes, simply try rebooting, and if you can't reboot, simply take the battery out, and reboot, once reboot, check in your apps to see if you have the SuperUser app, if you do then you are rooted, report back and we will walk you through the balance

I have Z4 running right now guys.. will update when/if I can get through those steps.

First thing you do is download Rom Manager from the market, the open it, flash a recovery image, once that is done, the we will have you boot into recovery and create a back up of your Sprint rooted Rom for safe keeping

K I have superuser now. Gonna continue with those steps up there^

Okay I've flashed, booted into recovery and it is doing the backup now. What is next after a reboot?

Choose the rom you would like to flash and download it to your sd card and if its not a sense rom make sure to download the gapps zip as well.

OK once you have your back up, reboot, then take a copy of that back up and keep it on your PC for safe keeping, also make a full copy of your SD card for safe keeping also, this way if you mess anything up you are covered. Once all that is done, you need to decide what Rom you want to install, then we will walk you through the flash process

Okay I need some suggestions? Will that 2.3.3 Gingerbread link in DonB's signature work?

Do i got back to rom manager and flash it in there?

I will check in later have to run, work is over, RB should have you covered from here, will check in later

You got the time to take it from here don, I have to run? I feel like we walk someone through a flash once a day here lately lol. But I enjoy helping folks get their phones to a enjoyable state.

Edit: Ok ill stick around

If you can just type up a quick explanation I should be fine, I don't want to hold anyone up. Or as long as my phone will be okay in this state I can just leave it. As long as it's useable.

Just tell me which things I can flash and what to do after or how to restore and I should be okay, you're last steps worked perfectly.

First your phone is perfectly usable right now it will work as if you haven't done anything to it. You just now have the freedom to do things you couldn't before.

Did you put your nandroid and a copy of your sd card on your computer?
