First time rooting.. need steps.

Okay text problem must have been a network issue.

Yes I have a copy of both the Clockworkmod folder and the SD card saved on my computer now.

If yes then;

1. Download the rom of your choice; suggestion http://androidforums.com/sprint-her...od-aosp-2-3-3-cm7-gingerbread-04-21-11-a.html

2. Download the gapps zip as well. Don't worry about the 3rd file that is a .img file.

3. Once you have both of those reboot to recovery

4. Wipe data/Factory Reset
Wipe cache partition
Scroll to Advance/Wipe Davlik cache

Go to Mounts and Storage

Partitions Menu/Format Boot
Partition Menu/Format System
Partition Menu/Format data
Partition Menu/Format Cache

"Do Not Format SD Card"

5. Now scroll down to apply zip from sd

6. That will bring up a list of all your folders choose the folder that you saved the 2 files to. Click it then choose the rom zip first. {let it do its thing) when done

7. Repeat step 6 for gapps zip. after it says successful again.

8. Reboot [will take some time to boot up since your flashing something new]

****If anything goes wrong or it doesn't boot dont panic
Just boot to recovery and goto backup restore and restore your nandroid

Got to go sorry I hope you can follow those steps. If not don't force it someone will be back on at some point but you should be fine if you made it this far. Good luck.
any last minute questions?

OK I am back, let me know if you still need help, you can go RB

Wow, okay thanks guys, it SEEMS to be working perfectly. Better and faster than before. I'll update here if I have any problems or concerns.. but for now my only question is there anything I should know about that I can do with this now that it is rooted that I may not now?

Does the 'Move to SD card' function work properly? I was hoping I could use that to help keep memory free.

Hold off on the move to SD for now, take baby steps, learn the Rom and feel it out first, did you flash the GB Rom and install the Gapps ??

OK now before you do another Nandroid back up of this ROM, set the phone up like you like it, I would download Fancy Widget from the market, for a good weather clock replacement, then also download Titanium back up, also download Launcher pro, that is a nice launcher replacement. That should give you a bit to set up

Yep got both of those flashed onto it.

Okay will do. One more question.

If I were to buy a larger SD card and copy the files of this one onto it, would I be okay?

Just an idea..

And you also suggest doing another backup shortly? It won't overwrite the original will it?

Have to go for a bit. Thanks for both of you guys help. Very much appreciated. And again i'll be sure to return with other concerns if I have them.

Yes NP, most of us are using 8GB cards, try to find one that is a class 8 or 10 better transfer rate, yes once you have the phone set up exactly how you like it,then you will make a back up of this Rom for safe keeping also.

Glad it all worked out for you. Hope you enjoy the new found speed of your phone.

And you can make as many nandroids as you like they save as the date made so make sure to rename one of the ones you make today.

If I tried to do this on a phone without the 2.1 update, would it still work the same way? My girlfriend has one that was never updated.

By the way, our phones our Cellular South if that matters. It didn't for mine obviously.

Also, is there a way to change the keyboard layout, or should I just find an app?

Look for a new keyboard app, swift key is what I am using

Sorry hate to ask this twice but I need to know if this same process will work for an older firmware Hero. I think it has 1.5?

I don't recall if Z4Root works on 1.5, if not you simply allow her phone to do the 2.1 update and then you can root from there, same process, but try rooting with the Z4Root first and see if it works

This thread rocked! Technically speaking I just evolved from tree dwelling to knuckle-dragging! Rooted with no prob using the z4, but ha(ing probs with the gingerbread install: no internet access. Seems important I have that. I have a 16gb card in my phone (early attempt to create space, speed, etc.) Do I need to reinstall the factory 2gb card for the drivets, etc. when i flash gingerbread again? Mucho Thanx for ALL the help you guys!

Your 16 GB microSD card should be fine. I put an 8 GB microSD card into my Sprint HTC Hero on day one of ownership and it has always worked great. ;)

As for the no Internet connectivity, I would recommend booting into recovery mode and wiping your cache and Dalvik cache. That might solve your problem.

Dangitt! Followed to a T, but same result. I have the alpha version, should I.try beta, or a different version of android? But why would this one not work on mine? Hmmmmm...

Sounds like you will need to just redo everything. Wipe everything and then flash the ROM and GApps again.

I would go with an AOSP Android 2.3 ROM or a CyanogenMod 7 ROM. They are both great Gingerbread ROMs.

Can I get those on the mkt's developer pagev,(itlooks like android versions, just wanna be sure I have the right thing), and if so, can I install the honeycomb? If not, where do i find the ones you just suggested, and whats the diff? I have the gapps file, do I install in order per the above procedure if I use that cyanogen one? Almost there, thankx!

Sorry for the barrage of questions there, just wanna get this right! I love my hero, its just gotten too slow no matter what apps I use to "boost" or optimize, whatever. If i could keep upgrading it, Id never get anything else. (a tablet will be my next step, but I digress for now)... :)

Go here for the CyanogenMod 7 Sprint HTC Hero ROM: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get/cm_heroc_full-146.zip . This is the latest nightly build, but it should be stable enough for you to use. I am on it with no problems.

Go here for the GApps for CyanogenMod 7: http://cmw.22aaf3.com/gapps/gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip . Flash the ROM first and then the GApps. As far as I know, there is no Honeycomb ROM for the Sprint HTC Hero in development right now and the tablet user experience would probably not be too easy to use on a 3.2 inch screen anyway.

Thanx, Ill try to flash those tonite!
Honeycomb is more of a tablet deal, huh? No idea, hee haw, hee haw... thanx for bein gentle about it bro! :)
