Root Fix battery defect without new ROM?

sushifor5

Android Enthusiast
I think I have the Time Without Signal battery bug that seems to be common to this phone...battery only lasts a day and I don't even use my phone...not for talking, I text maybe twice a day and get online for 10 minutes a day...use an app once a day or so, NOT heavy use or even normal use, LOL.

So, I was wondering if there were anything I could do to improve battery life or fix the battery problem without flashing a new ROM. I'm rooted, but still on stock ROM and not planning to change that just yet...still really just playing with and learning the rooted phone.

TIA!!

Toggle airplane mode for fifteen seconds every time you turn on your phone and you shouldn't be affected by tws bug. Sushi, it's time for you to flash a ROM. There is nothing to it. Rooting and making a recovery is the hard part. Flashing a room is so easy. I love cm7 and will never go back to anything resembling a stock ROM

Using airplane mode for when your not using any services such as GPS, Bluetooth, mobile web or wifi, when you don't plan on texting or calling is your best bet, other than flashing a gingerbread based rom, such as BACKside.

Yeah, I know, I know...I should try a custom ROM, LOL!!! :)

I've done the airplane mode toggle trick and it doesn't work for me...

Any other thoughts? Thanks!!

That's one of the things I'm afraid of, LOL!!! I can hear my kids now..."mommy, step away from the phone!!"

Well, why cm7? i'm open to a compelling case...

i'll be honest...i don't use the phone that much and i've spent weeks getting it to where it is now; i really like the looks of it and the functionality (Go Launcher, all my apps, etc)...I just don't like the battery glitch and I want to be able to stream video.

i'm not sure i want to start over again and have to recreate its looks and functions...i don't have much time to tinker anymore...

so, that's probably the biggest reason i'm dragging my feet...of course, i'm also a bit chicken after the heart-pounding three-hour rooting challenge, LOL!!!

i appreciate input/suggestions and what roms you love and why, but no promises that i'll switch, LOL...i don't give in to pressure easily. :p (hubby ripping hair out...LOL!)

hmmm...ok, that does pique my interest, but i'm more interested why you would chose one rom over another...which features you are loving that are unique and "must haves..." thanks for your input!! :)

At the time backside was the most stable and I don't like to switch. Rooting does not have to be done again. When you restore your backed up apps with titanium everything will look like you had it plus you'll have all the new functionality of cm7. I'm still finding new functions and Jerry is always adding new functions.

It works and doesn't crash.

When my phone was stock if it had 48 hours of uptime it was doing good. Last time I looked at my wife's uptime it was well over a week (and would have been more but she forgets to charge her phone). My uptime is less because I've been flashing a bunch of different roms. But when I was running the 1017 build I had very nearly a week uptime.

Here's a good article describing the added features of CM7 over vanilla Android.
CM7 Settings for Phones - Explaination - Blogs For Android

Many of these features may be of little value to you, but I like to point out a few that should be considered by everyone:

Revoking individual permission -- With Android, permissions are a all or nothing situation, you see the permissions an app requires, and you either accept them all, or you don't use the app. With CM7, you can disable individual permissions on any app, rather than having to accept them all. For example, you download a game app that wants to access the internet for whatever reason (stats, hi-scores, tracking, etc). You don't want to let the app access the internet, so you revoke that permission, and keep on using the app.

Status bar & Notification -- You already know how your status bar and notification dropdown looks and acts on plain Android, here are a few of the tweaks on CM7:
- Swipe the status bar left or right to change your phone's brightness
- Adds a widget with buttons that toggle various system settings (wifi, sounds/vibrations, etc)
- Allows you to swipe away individual notifications, instead of having to clear them all
- And on my BACKside builds, you can center the clock and change it's color ;)

Lockscreen options galore -- You can change your lockscreen to many different styles, with different unlocking options, and automatic app launchers. You can even remove the unlocking control buttons and use gestures to unlock the phone and automatically launch apps. For example, you could draw a "u" to unlock the phone only, an "m" to unlock and go to email, an "s" to unlock and go to sms messaging, etc etc.

Performance and battery -- With CM7 you can overclock/underclock your phone without extra apps to make it run smoother or save battery life. You can also change the way the screen renders to gain additional performance or battery life. And you can change the way memory is handled.

The article I linked to above has four pages of CM7's extra settings. To get similar extra settings on stock Android would require so many apps you wouldn't have room left for any other apps. ;)

The only true way to understand all the hoopla about this is to try it out. Bottom line is, if you do flash a CM7 ROM and follow the install instructions, you will create a nandroid backup in recovery of your current setup. If you don't like CM7, you can restore that nandroid backup in about 5 minutes, and your phone will be right back to the way it is now! ;)

OK, when I rooted I thought I read something about different recoveries for different ROMs...I rooted with gingerbreak and have the xionia recovery. Would this be compatible with the CM7 ROMs?

thanks for all the input, I appreciate it!

Holy cow. Im not using backside to it's full potential...... yet.

Thanks Sushi for asking so many unique questions, and thank you Jerry for the patience you have. Your post was perfect!

OK, so I'm assuming (maybe incorrectly) that the CM7 ROM users here are using Jerry's version? Is that what I would want for CM7 on the V? I'm noticing different versions of CM7 when I look around online...

Basically, I'm hoping to get my sad battery life fixed and also have better control over the permissions of my apps, as well as more app storage. I'd also very much like to have flash on my phone for videos. But I really don't require uber-techno things from my phone, so didn't initially think I'd want a complex ROM...

But, CM7 seems to make many V users happy and I'm willing to try it if I'm going to go the custom ROM route. Will it supply those particulars I'm desiring?

@Jerry:
I've read thru the instructions on how to flash your ROM (I clicked the BACKside ROM link in your siggy above) and had a couple questions, if you don't mind.

Here are your instructions:

---Installing from another ROM

1) Backup your apps with something like TitaniumBackup or MyBackup

2) Download the BACKside ROM zip file, the gapps zip file, and optional GreenMachineTheme zip file linked below and place them on your sdcard

3) Boot into recovery

4) Make a backup (ALWAYS RECOMMENDED!)

5) Wipe cache, and under advanced wipe dalvik cache

6) Under mounts, format boot, system, data, and cache (only recommended when coming from a different ROM)

7) Flash the BACKside ROM zip file

8) Flash the gapps zip file

9) [Optional] Flash the GreenMachine-UOT zip file for the Green Machine Theme

10) Reboot your phone

11) Restore apps, but DO NOT RESTORE SYSTEM APPS!!!

12) Enjoy yummy gingerbread and the CyanogenMod goodies

OK...so I'm assuming if I come from stock ROM these would be the instructions i'd follow?

You say that the Green Machine theme is optional...so if I don't use it, what would I end up with when I put on the ROM? I'm revealing some real tech ignorance here, LOL, but I'm not sure exactly what a theme is...I'm using Go Launcher on my phone now and I have wallpaper from Zedge...would I be able to recreate my current look on your ROM?

OK, I'm reading about how I would change recoveries (thanks to ben above), but am not there yet...i used xionia in my root.

Again, sorry for being dumb, but I don't know how I would do steps 5 thru 8 in your instructions...I know how to make a nandroid, since doing it when I rooted...but I've never done anything else in my recovery. I assume (there I go again, LOL) that wiping data would be an option in the recovery's menu? And the "mounts" thing in step 6 would be self-evident there as well?

So how do I actually "flash" the zip files in step 7 and 8?

And I think I know that I would restore my apps by downloading TiBu from the market and restoring my apps thru it...

OK, sorry to be dense, but I want to be sure I understand these things before attempting something...

TIA!

PS...I've seen a couple youtube videos available on flashing the CM7 ROM...can you recommend one particularly for the V? THe other phones seem to use different buttons pressed to get thru the recovery.
