Fix for signal strenth on the horizon (FOR MARCH!!)

I saw interesting comment by Phonearena saying there is rumor that ICS has issue with LTE network. That might explain why verizon nexus was delayed so much and still some users are having trouble with LTE signal. I believe this will be resolved by software driving the LTE radio.
 
I dropped into two Verizon stores this afternoon.

Store 1
Nexus: -69 dB
Rezound: -84 dB
Blackberry: -82 dB

Store 2
Nexus: -106 dB
Rezound: -89 dB
Blackberry: -90 dB

I forgot to look at what software version was running on each Nexus.

This could indicate a QC issue that varies between units, but it could also mean the phone is fine at closer ranges yet drops off more quickly as the distance from the cell site increases.

If you turn off 4G and use 3G it is just as week, also my wifi signal is crap compared to my girl's on her HTC Incredible 2. Why are all things that have to do with wireless connectivity suffering?

All I can say is that the TBH team got hold of some updates that drastically changed the signal strength (4.1?). So I'm in complete agreement, that I think we'll see an update that will improve reception.

Same here. At -90 to -100dBm, I'm still getting 35Mbps down and 18up. No dropped calls, even in an area where my last phone had issues.

No complaints here, but I do live in a dense area with lots of 4G towers. I can understand others who are on the fringe of coverage seeing more issues.
 
Users are reporting familiar sounding 4G issues, such as poor handling of the switch between 3G and 4G mode (toggling airplane mode tends to fix this) and lower-than-expected reception strength.

This seems to happen with all lte devices on verizon at first. Look at the maintenance updates they send out and all have something to improve 3g to 4g connectivity. I think it is more verizons lte network than it is the phones.
 
March? Ill have returned this by then. January? Better be before the 15th.

I have a weaker signal also compared even to my Charge. That being said my new house is in a weaker signal area.

When I went into town I was at a steady solid 3G and 4G signal according to the bars and the dBm
 
March? No way... An update will surely be pushed out before then. There is no way this goes that far...

I had -76 on friday on 4.0.2, this was 100% in line with a droid charge and bionic and razr.

Today, I was getting.... help me out here, I think I posted -102, or a lower number.

Like some have said, it's probably not the equipment, but tower. I wish I wrote down all the other settings last Friday when I bought it.

If they don't push a fix in the next 1.5 weeks, I'm going to vehemently complain, and possibly take it back now.
 
Hahahaha, too funny, I ran the speedtest.net test and I'm getting 0.13Mbps download and 0.05Mbs upload on 3G (sucks big time, the needle barely moved) and I'm supposedly in a 4G area! Switched to wifi and I get 14.6Mbps/9.5Mbps.
 
Issue though is the Thunderbolt was able to be improved by fixing 3g/4g instability, but the TB did not have a weak dBm signal.

How does VZW fix a weak signal? Since the wifi is also weak, maybe Samsung stepped down the mW to conserve battery.

Seems the only way is to increase the power to the radios (if possible ).


Stepping down the mW would do nothing for the sensitivity for the radio. It outputs no power to obtain the signal. They could theoretically update the software to accept different levels of signal which would technically increase what you see it receiving.

I have pretty lousy reception on my droid incredible so I can only imagine the nexus reception will be superior.
 
Still, any of our more technically inclined here, please explain how they can improve the dBm signal through software, besides increasing mW level and decrease battery life? I think the device is as designed and Sammy was trying to milk as much battery life as they could. Ditto for the weak wifi. OEMs keep stuffing new tech in the devices, but no new battery tech to keep it all in check.

People mention the TB update helped it, but the TB did not have a weak signal, but did have an unstable hand-off with 3G/4G that would cause it to lose all data signal.

Added; Sorry byrds8, missed your post, since had not updated page in a little bit. The problem there as you probably appreciate is that can make the signal more unstable (lower mW). Kind of like a see-saw and finding the right balance. The balance though is defined by the radio chip used and the design of the antenna array.

My understanding is most radio chips now do not have much room to play and power is more a binary state, rather than a variable one (can not adjust them, per say). Wifi though can still be adjusted.
 
Except with software you can change the sensitivity of the receiver. This would allow the receiver to accept a lower signal basically having a broader range. You can not change the power of the receiver there is no power to change. The receiver only picks up what is sent out. The transmitter is what you can up or lower the power out. Granted even with software there is only so much they can do. The TB use to be really crappy too. The Nexus is almost the same as my wife's TB as for signal received. A few updates later and the TB was a bit better in stability and received signal.
 
Maybe until March to find out. Not seeing this take that long, since too much coverage already on the issue. My guess is weeks rather than months and the best fix they can do will be made.
 
I doubt it will be March unless its VZW talking about fixing their Transceivers at the towers to better work with the transition between 3g and 4g better. Google will not take the long to push whatever updates they can Id be willing to bet.

Especially since google already said 4.0.3 will be rolling out in the coming weeks and tbh had 4.1 and said it greatly increased the signal.

They can increase the antenna gain. Sometimes this hurts the SNR tho.
