Flashing 2.2 rom

krirish

Lurker
Was thinking about flashing 2.2 to my phone. Wanted to know is it worth the risk or should I just wait for 2.2 to come out? I am just tired of waiting. So is it worth the risk? Also would be nice to take att bloatware off

speaking from my experience

I was also debating this for a long while and once I did it I wished I had done it a long time ago. I am running perception 8 and also have run Axura however I did not like the theme on Axura too plain for my taste, but both ran really well and flashing is really easy so if you are thinking of doing it my advice is to go ahead if you run into problems or don't like it you can always go back to stock easily.

FWIW, I have been running JI6 for over 2 months now and I'm very happy that I loaded it. I have enjoyed the Froyo features and also the 2.2 apps that have been upgraded with new features ... (gmail, google maps, etc)

at this point, you should just wait. Maybe a month or two ago, you should've flashed a rom, but now, with the epid 4g getting froyo almost definitely on the 26th. The captivate can't be far behind. I'm still hopeful we will get froyo by the end of the year. Don't bother possibly voiding your warranty.

I almost flashed a froyo rom, but then I read a story on this forum from someone who flashed a froyo rom, needed a replacement for some other technical problem, flashed back to stock with odin, and ended up with a $500 charge to their bill. At this point, its not really worth flashing a froyo rom.

was thinking of flashing and your post changed my mind. I really just want flash working. Grrrr. But I will flash if the official push doesn't come out by the end of the month.

I for one will not even go to the official froyo as it will likely not be as good as the roms. i have had to send in one phone that had a rom on it and had flashed back stock and sent it in and i did not receive any charges for them sending me a new phone. i also have not heard of that happening to anyone but nevertheless if you dont feel comfortable doing it then it may not be worth it

I bounce back and forth every ten minutes. I just decided "screw it" and started watching some videos on how to do it and it got really in depth. It turned me off and I bounced back to "well hell, it may be out this coming weekend. I can wait...

I've heard the phone is near unbrickable (as in almost always recoverable) but I've now got $360 invested in this thing (200 purchase and 160something to fix a broken screen) and like I'd never tamper with my xbox because I've been able to send it in and get it fixed for free three times now, I worry about killing such an expensive to replace device.

This also makes me feel like this isnt even my phone. I'd never balk at swaping my laptops os. I'd just go back to windows 7 if the newest version of ubuntu wasn't to my liking. And that thought process gets me frustrated and figure "well then just do it". Then I watch the videos or read the how-tos and get turned off again.

Right now I sort of want to do it to take ownership over my phone, but if I **** it up I'm going to immediately regret it and have a heart attack. =P

I am by no means telling you to flash your phone. Everyone has to make their own decision as far as flashing.

BUT, it is by no means as complicated as you seem to think. If I can do it, anyone can. And I have flashed a lot of roms...

now rooted... alcohol really helps ween off the fears I should be having right now lol. I'll update as I go along. I hope this isnt considered spamming...

I'm following a youtube video as I feel more comfortable with this style of tutorial and it's for cognition. I'm now rooted (warranty voided! No turning back!) and current at the titanium backup step. At 32% and video paused. I think the main reason I decided to do it is because A) I just learned that my mother's phone is approved for an upgrade and she really doesn't want another phone, plus I am taking a leap of faith and really putting my faith into the modding community.

I used to be real big into modding computer hardware and it was a lot of fun. It's never without it's risks. I mean, I once took a dremel to a $400 video card because I mounted a ramsink onto a chip that ended up blocking my watercooling heatsink. Everything worked out...

I generally have bad luck with electronics and the biggest thing that put me off from doing any of this is that my phone sucked since day one. Lots of freezeups and that sorta lead up to my screen getting broken (had to break the phone down to get it to reboot, dended up dropping it while doing that one time) so I didn't want to void my warranty.

But I think I actually talked myself into it with one of my posts here where I described feeling like this wasn't my phone and that sort of pissed me off. I hadn't thought about it that way in my head until I described how I felt about it. Maybe that sounds weird. I'm on the drink...

95% and so far everything is going perfectly. Well, there was an additional warning going into titanium that the video didn't have about how my settings didn't allow for something or other and I'm hoping I can just pretend that didn't mean anything... but okay now I'm done with the backup and back to the video. Will post updates...

If you really want to, go ahead and flash your rom. Not only will this open a lot of possibilities with roms including gingerbread roms that have to be coming soon, but rooting your phone will give you a lot of capabilities too. Just realize that you will need to be in it for the long run and learn a bunch of new things to handle any cases where you possibly brick or screw up other functions of your phone. I've heard that this phone is unbrickable. I wouldn't say any phone is really unbrickable but the over in the xda forums it seems that there are a lot of ways to unbrick bricked phone. You would have to do your own research tho.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I want to say it again. I just flashed Eugene's Ginger Clone Rom....all I can say is wow.

amazing working along with the video guide. I mean really, my phone so far is doing everything his phone is. It's very reassuring!

Just finished the odin3 one click downloader and my phone is now as if it was turned on for the first time (as the video says).

had my first hiccup and mini heart attack but retried the "reinstall packages" and it brought me to the clockworks screen as expected. Whew!

shhhiiiiiiiit... somehow I seem to have missed a step, and I thought I followed this thing to the T. I'm now at a step where I'm supposed to be choosing the cognition rom and at no point do I remember it telling me how to do that. ****!

if youre in clockwork recovery, all you do is select install zip from sd card, and then find the cog.zip and install it

backed out and rebooted phone. phone seems okay... rewatching videos to see where the **** he told me to get cognition before telling me when to navigate to it...

that option wasnt available. I either missed, or there is no mention, of how to get the cog rom onto the phone.
