Root Flashing Apps

So i've been thinking, is it possible to backup all your apps using something like astro, copy them to your computer, compress them into a zip file, move that back to your phone and flash that after flashing a ROM to restore your apps, is this even possible or is it more complicated than that?

thats basically what i do, then i use TI to link them back with the market.

its a bit more complicated than just that though. you need to sign it and create an update script too

Can you walk me through the process of that? Or point me in the direction of a page/post that describes it?

You can just use Titanium Backup to backup all of you apps and data (on a schedule, if you like) and restore them - with market links, so that updates get reinstalled automatically from the market as well.
