Flashing question (slightly different than normal)

Rastaman-FB

Extreme Android User
Ok, Due to the nature of my work I have a pre release Desire dev build that is running 2.1 update1.
someone came to me with it saying they want froyo put on it as currently its an o2 build of 2.1.1.
fine i thought (looking at the different brushed aluminium effect front, chssled chin and orange camera surround) ill just check the bootloader.
I then find that this has a devt .80 s-off development bootloader
I didnt want to flash this as its like gold but the guy wanted 2.2 on there however it wouldnt let me as no matter what i do the RUU does not recognise the device via usb even though i have the drivers installed (same pc i used for mine)

Is there a way i can flash a custom rom (like teppics stock rom with a2sd+) without flashing the bootloader or using unrevoked considering i have s-off by default?

sorry for the big essay but i felt explaining it fully would help

Or although rom manager requires root, it may allow you to put clockwork on SD as update.zip.
I can get into recovery and apply update.zip to loss clockwork

Check what recovery it has. I have a HTC enginering recovery that allows me to flash.
really? do you have s-off dev hboot aswell

if i have this ill be able to flash a rooted rom without having to go through the unrevoked rooting process?

i9ll check when it comes back in today

it looks mad, its got 4 gold pins at the bottom, it was an NDA device with a serial number inscribed onto the chin when is sharp and not curved. same device just looks a bit alien

Nope, I'm just on a standard .80 bootloader.

I rooted using this version:

14/Jun r6 riskfreeroot - HTC Desire rooting guide - now with HBOOT 0.80 and OS to 1.21 support - Android @ MoDaCo

It states:
The root process will NOT...
  • enable you to flash your device with a custom recovery image

However, it did push files to my desire and I can apply update.zip from recovery.

Might also be worth looking at this:

Fake-flash by Koush, launching recovery on your device without a PC - Android @ MoDaCo

If you can apply update.zip from recovery that is already on there, you may be able to get into clockwork. Pretty much what I was suggesting earlier, but without Rom manager

yeah looked at that but apparently require root.
hes phoned in sick today so i cant get my hands on it :/

ah thats a real shame.

How did he get it?

By "rooted with a test image" I think that means if rooted the way I have, with the recovery I have, so worth a try anyway.

ok hes come in, i have the device and the recovery is blue
android recover 2e and has apply:update.zip wipe etc etc
guessing the e is engineering right?

gonna make a gold card first me thinks :P

Yes, thats exactly what I have. I have clockworkmod as update.zip and can apply it and get to it and flash from there.

Although, my roms are always rooted, but as far as I am ware, you only need recovery to flash. Root is within Android itself.

right clearing a 16gig msd card and going to goldcard it then put an ext partition on it
then im going to flash teppics rom with apps2sd on it

wish me luck

*grows impatient*

haha

Hurry up dagnamnit
going through the process mate, couldnt create an ext partition due to it not being rooted and new cmr doesnt have partition in recovery, only rom manager which needs root to reboot

what im doing now is installing a custom rom without a2sd that is rooted

then i will run rom manager and create ext
then ill reflash the rom to support a2sd+

its long but getting there :P

ok then fellow leeds friend.
We have success up in the whiterose area :P

In order
1. backed up sdcard
2. created goldcard
3. booted downloaded rom manager
4. renamed the zip in the clockworkmod download folder to update.zip and moved it to /sdcard/
5. booted to engineering recovery and applied update.zip to fakeflash
6. wiped data/factory reset
7. applied teppics rooted froyo (with a2sd but without script update)
8. applied radio for froyo and rebooted
9. entered mass storage and backed up files
10. redownloaded rom manager and applied recovery again then partitioned sdcard with 512 ext
11. booted back to rom and copied files back
12. rebooted to recovery and applied teppics rom and applied 1.4 a2sd script
13. installed latest apps from recovery
14. rebooted with a happy android

cheers man, rigmarole i tell you
i cant boot my work machines into livecd for gparted due to a custom pxe boot menu that doesnt allow direct bios access.

it would have been a lot quicker

Yeah. Also, would be nice if you could partition directly from clockworkmod too.

yeah i dont know why you cant considering its the same system that is used by rom manager to do that process right?

odd, but then this whole thing has been odd from the moment it graced my presence

thanks for your help/pointers man.

this guy is one ahead of me now as hes rooted with s-off.
I dont even have s-off yet as i dont have the bottle at the moment

I've not got s-off either, but I don't really need it tbh.
true for now i dont need it but it niggles me that i dont have something that i can get easily and will probably require at some point if not just for my own nerdy satisfaction
especially when a colleague has it and he only wanted a2sd+ to have copilot and n4s shift on without a storage problem.
ive talked myself out of it since the day s-off was released for .93

I've tried to talk myself into it, but I just can't. the only advantage I can see is removing system/apps without having to use adb shell or reflash.

I'm quite happy to manually move out of the rom zip file and reflash.

Plus, I don't want to lose my engineering test recovery.

how did you get that may i ask?
I mean i had this one with s-off hboot and engineering recovery as it was a pre release NDA dev/eng device. the shell and moulds were not even tweeked the same as production as you can see on the photos
the buttons are different and it has 4 gold pins on the bottom of the device.

is yours something of similar breed? or is that how you rooted back in the desires beginning

Its just the old school method of rooting, pre Unrevoked (or pre my knowledge of it anyway).

I just used the Modaco rooting guide I linked to earlier.
