FolderOrganizer - A Beginners Guide

Thanks. Too bad. I'm not going to root my phone.....so no go for me.

No need to root..... LauncherPro is a User Interface (UI) app that sits on top of Android, just like HTC Sense does. On a stock Desire, launcherPro simply replaces Sense as the UI, and you can switch between the two at any time.

Okay, didn't realize that. But I still have eclair, (I'm on Us Cellular) So till I get froyo, my phone's memory is pretty dried up. I may reconsider it once they finally release it. Also, I tried doing a search just now, but is there a guide on using and setting up LP floating around here?

Awesomely helpful thread :)
Just wanting to know if you can use FO to organise all data? eg can I use it to organise music and vids and movies and work data into folders instead of accessing this stuff through gallery. It's a hassle scrolling through personal stuff to get to work stuff for eg. hoping to just use FO instead of getting some album app and some music organiser etc.

Not really, FO lets you personalise links and shortcuts, but it's not a file manager app. For sorting and organising misic, pictures, videos, etc you need apps for each case.

Cheers Eris. Androids have gotta be the first to make this possible. Be soooo much better if it was easy to rename files and organise in folders like on bigger devices (computers...) Is it possible for an app to do this? Anyway, thanks.

EDIT: I was too new/dumb to realise I can simply plug Desire HD straight into my laptop (macbook Pro) as a hard drive and transfer/ organise everything into folders just like on any other hard drive. haha. So easy. Man I love this phone.

Yeah, that's what I do. I make folders on Windows PC and name them what I want, then copy them to the root of my SD card via USB and the Gallery picks them up.

For music, ringtones and notifications it's a little different. You add your files to the /media/music, or /media/ringtones or /media/notifications folders. These are system folders created by Android on your SD card normally so they should be there. If not, just create a new folder called Media on the root of the SD card then create the 3 sub-folders inside it for the files.

Hi there.

Thanks for the helpful thread. I don't want to be awkward but whereas some folk are having trouble removing the text under the icon, I just want text and not an icon!! I want a screen with just words on it and when I tap on the word it takes me to the appropriate app. I think I might need the full version to do this? Or not? Is there an icon pack which uses just words for the apps?

Sorry if I have missed this in the instructions or in the thread.

Just remove the text under the icon, then use a text-icon for the shortcut. Lekky made some great icons that I use on my dock, here's the links to a couple:

Hi there! Im a real newbie :( and i have a question about folder organizer.

Why is that everytime i restart my phone, the icons/widgets (games, internet, multimedia etc) just dissappear from my screen. And instead of the icons the text will be *Deleted label* and some error icon will appear.

I am using Samsung Galaxy S 2.2.1

Thanks in advance for helping me out.

here is an example of what kind of problem i get Widgets lost after reboot - Folder Organizer | Google Groups

I am looking to organize my Dolphin browser bookmarks in the same way I organize Favorites in Intenet Explorer, i.e., in a folder/sub-folder/sub-folder ... hierarchial fashion. Will FolderOrganizer actually let you create a folder with a sub-folder in it, and then within that sub-folder let you create another subfolder, and keep drilling down?

There's an option in LauncherPro's dock settings that enables the message count to be displayed on any custom icon.

Where is this option at? I am only able to have the unread SMS count appear on Handcent - not a FolderOrganizer shortcut for Handcent to change the icon.

I think you may already have the answer, but I'll repeat it here for others. Add the Handcent shortcut to the LauncherPro dock WITHOUT changing the icon in FolderOrganizer, then long press the shortcut and you get the option to change the icon to whatever you choose. Enable the SMS Unread Count option in LauncherPro and it will be shown. This only works if you change the app icon using LP - FolderOrganiser doesn't allow this function.

Honest answer is I don't know, maybe someone has set up sub-folders for internet shortcuts?

Thank you for the beginner guide.

Can third party icon packs be added to the external SD card? If so, do you make a separate folder for them?

Thanks again.

Yes, i have my own set of custom icons which i have just place in a folder on the root of the sd card.
Then when selecting icon, just choose "android image gallery" and then either use a file browser to find the folder or find them in the overall picture gallery. (btw i have put a .txt file called .nomedia in my icons folder to stop them appearing in the overall picture gallery)

I want to have folders, within a folder. Is that possisble. Like I want a folder, so when I click on it, it contains, my games, tools, system, and music folders.

EDIT: I think I figured it out. Just need to buy the full version.

I love FO lite.

i bought the full version, but it didn't replace the lite.
the full remained empty & the lite was just the way i set it up.
any suggestions?
thanks!

One problem I have with this app is that even with the "show icon in toolbar" option unchecked, space is still allocated in the toolbar for each app that FO places in the notification drawer. That option basically just creates an invisible icon instead of a visible one, which I'll admit is better than nothing, but still takes up valuable space in the notification bar.

I'm guessing there's no way around this with the current version of the app, but if there's a way to make that option actually remove the icon altogether, it'd be awesome if the developer would consider adding this to a future version.

It does seem like it might be a limitation of the OS, since I can't recall ever seeing an entry in the notification drawer that doesn't also have an icon in the toolbar. Although the icons do seem to vary in width, so maybe it's possible to at least make an invisible icon that takes up essentially no space.

EDIT: I found a semi-workaround. Using a free app called Notification Toggle, I was able to add a single notification drawer entry that contained widgets to do what I was doing with two shortcuts in FO. So I was able to cut the notification toolbar icon space from 2 to 1. It'd still be nice to not have any toolbar icons, but I can live with this.
