I happen to speak Chinese. There are a large variety of Chinese dialects. I can speak 3 of them. My mother (and her side of the family) speaks one dialect, my father (and his side) another one and my wife (and her side) a third. I can switch dialects depending on whom I am speaking with. I grew up in an environment where I was exposed to all three dialects and heard and spoke all of them.
 
My daughter (native Coloradan) and I ran into some people from Queens on a trip.
Daughter asked me if they were speaking English. She meant it, too.

Lucky she never heard my aunt who was from Brooklyn and sounded like something out of a 1950s Brooklyn Dodger movie.

lol that's adorable :)

There are certain accents here that I really despise (ex. Italian American) but others I really love (Brooklyn).
 
I was working with a vendor from Dublin. I was emailing someone from that company and then one day he left me a voice mail message. I couldn't understand what he was talking about. I didn't even know it was the person I was emailing since his name was Garret and he left the vmail saying he was Garth. I didn't know Garth and Garret was the same thing like Tony and Anthony. Where I live, I have never met anyone named Garth or Garret before. Also, he was saying things like "half 3". I'm thinking, "That's one and a half." It actually means 3:30 (as in time).

I had to get a colleague who was from England to translate the voice message for me before I figured out what it was about.
