Forced 2.0.1 DROID UPDATE! HOWTO

Did you by any chance choose option 4 to wipe data, factory reset your phone? There were 4 options and you should have chosen option 2 to install the update. They were teeny tiny. I had to get out my magnifying glass to read them!

nope, I did the update as instructed...I actually did the update the other night (the 8th) and everything was still present and working, up until about an hour and a half-two hours ago; which would be the last time I noticed my data...but it's definitely all gone, I rad the card through my reader and nothing...

Just as I figured, my OTA just failed as well with the same "assert failed: apply_patch_check" error.

Calling VZ tomorrow I guess.

So, I installed it, and it did some uncool things to my phone (most notably making all the icons/widgets disappear off my home screen), so I decided it didn

I do not think you can. Try wiping it from the recovery menu (holding x at startup and pressing the power and camera button when the "!" appears). I read on another forum that there is not a downgrade yet.

That's what I was afraid of. I already tried it from the recovery menu, but no dice. :(

I've got insurance on the phone, so maybe I'll end up swapping it out for a new one. Hate to do that, though.

Well I feel pretty lucky, everything is just great for my robot. Bring on 2.1, although I dunno what else they are gonna fix, everything seems pretty nice already.

Don't feel lucky... I'm just UNLUCKY :)

As near as I can tell there's only 5 people I've found with the same error as me. Wish I could track down why, but don't have the time.

Damnit man! I am just gonna say that I am lucky! lol
Seriously that is unlucky though, good luck sending good vibes your way...
DROOOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID!:D

Did you actually try to install from the menu options that appeared after clicking on the camera and volume button or stop at that error?

No I tried to install it from the menu as well. I'll get a new phone tomorrow (er, today I guess, damnit I gotta go to bed!) and all should be fine.

I also got some kind of error message. I went ahead and updated anyway, I believe option 2. The update went fine and all is well. When I hold the x and then camera and volume, I no longer get the error. I actually got a little lost in your posts, so I think you did NOT get the update in. You can wait for the OTA which should be really close, or try the update anyway. Unfortunately I can't recall exactly what my error was, though it may be the same one you had.

Hey everyone.... if you go to the marketplace and download a program called *download crutch* it allows u to download the update straight to your download folder of your sd card. From there u just rename and move to the sd card folder and follow the rest of the directions listed. Enjoy!

did this yesterday ... was simple, quick and worked great. thanks to all that got this going.

and.. if you dont understand what the "root" of a drive is, you prob shouldn't be doing this forced update. :) thats just my 2 cents.

Yeah, but most people that are technologically adept enough to find it necessary to show file extensions understand that naming your file "update.zip.zip" is just silly and there's no reason that Android would need that.

True. Though, after reading through this thread, it's quite obvious that not all the posters are "technologically adept." I think that's why the tread was started. Then again, I'm sure somebody will come along and post otherwise.

After a couple trial runs I got it to work (and then helped others in the office). It worked exactly how others here have posted, just drop the file (renamed "update") onto the device (not any specific folder) and then follow the directions.....

After several calls in with Verizon and Motorola, level 2 motorola tech support said the phone needs to be replaced. OTA won't install, manual won't install, it's failing the system check. I'll need it replaced. Going to Verizon later to see about that.

Make sure the file isn't called update.zip.zip in the root of the SD card.
