Forcing Apps to install to the SD Card without root

Hello,

New to the forum, thanks to all for providing a site to discuss (and tweak) the Wildfire S phone. I performed all steps as described in the thread, and it seems to have worked, but when I go into Manage Applications, and try to move something (like HTC Likes, for example), the move to SD card button is grayed out. What apps have others been able to move to the SD card? Or will apps installed after this tweak be installed the SD card?

thank you .tried this method, was able to move whatsapp bt i cant move faceook app 23mb and maps to sd card and some other apps.

thanks very much for the tutorial, very easy

only problem i have now is same as above, was only able to move a couple of apps that i wasnt able to before over, the biggest was google play services which was only about 1.3meg

the vast majority of apps, both space hungry and smaller, are still unmovable, not sure if ive missed something??

cheers

Hey there. Great instructions and I don't doubt this works. However, after trying to go through these steps multiple times and knowing that I have done everything to a T, I am still not able to transfer apps to the SD card via Manage Applications. Move to SD as an option is still greyed. I did the command pm getInstallLocation and the prompt tells me it is located on the external, not the internal. So everything worked, the phone is just not allowing it.

I am using a HTC Wildfire. Model number is HTC-A510a. Android version 2.3.3 and HTC sense version 2.1.

Any help would be great as I am out of space, even after clearing caches and uninstalling updates.

Hi,

The described process went through well. Post this, I could see the options of 'Move to SD Card' for Facebook and Whatsap apps.

But, when I try clicking the move to sd card button, it jus stays grey ... says 'moving' for infinite time...Nothing happens!

Then I thought I'd leave the facebook app alone since it was pre-installed in the phone.

I uninstalled whatsap and tried to install it from playstore again and it continually shows an error msg

'Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card' :(

Can you help me out here ??

Radcore, I went ahead and moved your post into the Wildfire S forum. The phone will not let you move system apps even after the change. Can you move any of your user apps?

System apps (pre-installed) cannot be moved even after the change.

As for Whatsup, a few apps (and all widgets) won't run from the sd card. You may have to leave out on the device.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for posting something so helpful, I always like my phone but the lack of internal storage was driving me nuts.

I had a bit of trouble at first, but I realized I didn't download mini-sdk, I downloaded the standard method, which was making my life much more difficult.

After downloading mini-sdk and actually following directions literally (What an idea) it worked so fast, and so easily.

Thanks so much!

I cannot move anything other than what I have installed after purchase. These "downloads" are automatically installed on the SD card now. But yeah, I cannot move anything. It is all the grey button.

What I really want to move is Facebook, especially after the big update. It would free up at least 15 MB, considering some is left behind. But yeah, I'm sure I would find other material to be moved when need be. Butttt it's not taking it.

:(

So, I was stoked when the CMD commands all went as you said they would, everything looked great.

But then when I tried to install an app, it said I had insufficient storage available. I realized my phone wasn't seeing my SD card, so I powered it off, took out the SD, put it back in, powered up, and it recognized it again. Good. So I tried again...

Insufficient storage available. I tried a different app, insufficient storage. I have 4.5 gigs available on my SD, a measly 12 mb of internal, but the app I was trying to install was only 1.6 mb (Google tasks).

Any sage advice? Is it possible to redo the process and see if it works better a second time?

New to the site. Just wanted to say thank you for all the info provided.

An Android tweaking virgin, I got there in the end when I had all the software installed and followed the directions exactly.

Once again, thanks

:)

Hello,
Okay, here's my problem,
It all works until step 4. Type adb devices and press enter. You should then see the serial number of your phone displayed on screen.
What I have on CMD is :
C:\Windows\system32>cd\SDK-Tools

C:\SDK-Tools>adb devices
'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

C:\SDK-Tools>

WHAT DO I DO
Several other people have had this problem but there's never been an explanation which really worked (or which I could understand being a novice ...)

TY

Awesome post ! This is what i was looking for some days ago but got it lately. Lol

I would not root my device if i saw this before. The only reason i rooted is to using link2sd :)

Muchos gracias to El Presidente!1!11!! I'm a newbie at doing anything to my A510c (Virgin Mobile), but couldn't resist when I saw this great workaround to this phone's big problem. I had given up on being to install any apps. Now I can!! :D The only minor glitch was when I got a "[something HTC] not working" message after installing HTC Sync. I restarted my computer and everything after that went smooth as silk. Big hugs to you, EP!

Hey guys.
I tried doing this, and it works ok up to point 6, but when i type "setInstallLocation 2", it says 'permission denied'. Any idea how to fix this?
(im using windows 7 on parallels, on a mac book pro, if that matters)

Thank you
Theo

hi and thanks for this thread!im new here so i dont know much..
everything was ok until when it comes to step 6 i type

pm setInstallLocation 2 and i get

pm-get-install-location: returns the current install location.
NOTE: This is only intended for debugging; using this can cause applications to break and other undesirable behavior.
0 [auto]: Let system decide the best location
1 [internal]: install on internal device storage
2 [external]: install on external media

what do i type? i type 2 it says some error like not found or something like that, i type pm setInstallLocation 2 again and i get the same thing..WHAT TO DO??

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Hi it works.. There is a working sd card in the phone. It installs the app to the sd card and all but the app's icon doesnt appear in the "apps" menu.. Thank you for your help!

Thanks. This worked better than trying to re-partition SD card. Only a few apps were able to move. The ones I really wanted to move, calendar, e-mail, people, contacts, etc. were still grayed out. Maybe I can remove the accounts, uninstall the apps, install the apps new onto the SD Card, then add the accounts back in. Would you know how to uninstall apps?

Thank you.

Lucky
