Forcing Apps to install to the SD Card without root

Whatsapp goes directly to my SD Card, flickr won't install or move, Viber won't install directly, but will move if I do it manually (it leaves 3.6MB on the phone though).

Ok, found out what's the problem.

I had 2 mb free on phone, so neither WhatsApp nor Viber wouldn't let me install them. So I released internal memory until I've got 12 mb free, so installed whatsapp and allowed me, and same with viber.

Can it be that this thing first moves it to phone and then to sd card, instead of installing it directly?

Now, as you said, I have 8mb free (the 3,60 from viber took it's toll).

Thanks for everything!!!

What apps are you attempting to install?

Hello Mr. El Presidente,

I have found your thread about HTC Wildfire S very useful with S-ON on phone.

Few things i have noticed, that few applications do install on sd card but also in internal memory, so i often run out of space (looking forward for a solution to this)

& 1 important application i am looking forward to install is Citibank India, which doesnt install even if i have 12mb of internal mem space.

Looking forward for a solution to this.

And 1 question: if i format/RESET/ my phone will the setting to force app to sd be lost?

Regards,
N3ON

I downloaded the adb thing, it wasn't working so tried to uninstall it and re-install, whilst uninstalling though it deleted just about everything off my laptop. Not happy and it still didn't sort my phone out!

Hello,

New to the forum, thanks to all for providing a site to discuss (and tweak) the Wildfire S phone. I performed all steps as described in the thread, and it seems to have worked, but when I go into Manage Applications, and try to move something (like HTC Likes, for example), the move to SD card button is grayed out. What apps have others been able to move to the SD card? Or will apps installed after this tweak be installed the SD card?

Phone Info
HTC Wildfire S (Virgin Mobile)
Android 2.3.4

I'm having the same issue - the "move to SD card is grayed out". I'm assuming I would be able to transfer programs to the SD card and I can't.

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

To uninstall, all you need to do is delete the Sdk Tools folder? Did you download the full SDK or the Mini one?

What apps are you trying to move? System apps (facebook, gmail etc) can't be transferred

What would be helpful to know is what should I expect to be able to do now that I followed the steps (i.e., loaded the SDK Tools and HTC Sync - great directions, BTW!). I assumed that I could load non-system apps such as Instagram and JuiceDefender onto the SD card without making the changes. Most of the Move to SD Card buttons are greyed out, except for the ones above. A quick overview of the benefits and what I should expect to see after making these changes will be appreciated.

Thanks a bunch.

I have the old ADR6225. Not the Wildfire S. I downloaded the Mini SDK-Tools from the link provided on page 1. Did NOT install anything in it but followed the directions in the 1st post on page 1 and it worked perfectly. I already had HTC Sync installed (installed when I first got my phone 2 years ago and decided I didn't really need it at the time). I have been having to "swap out" apps when I wanted to try another app for quite a while now. The only "Move to SD Card" buttons that have been greyed out are the System Apps. I have moved several so far and this has brought my phone back to life. Thank You!!!

Thanks El Presidente,it works perfect for me..i used the mini-sdk,installed the HTC-sync prog and followed your directions.
Ohw and for the people who are getting the message:' adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file...unzip the mini-sdk to your desktop, dubbelclick it and move/copy the folder sdk-tools to your c-disk...then the instructions work perfect(otherwise you got a std-tools directory inside another std-tools directory).

Thank you el presidente. I am new to this forum and yr easy to follow advice has really helped me. Worked on 2nd attempt after reading some of the other posts. Brilliant!

Hi! I'm stuck on your no2 option for getting my phone more memory. It says open command prompt...how do i do this? Really not sure. Have tried to open SDK as administrator but loadsa info just rolls round in the wee black box then goes off? Really confuuused!!

I need help. The low storage is bugging me alot!
I installed HTC Sync, changed it to USB Debugging and made it Charge Only.
When I enter ADB Devices, it doesnt show my device.
Then when I enter ADB Shell, it has an error saying that they cant find my device

Have you tried another port/cable?

Thank you El Presidente for this wonderful fix and the terrific explanation on "how to". Just got my Wildfire S last night in an effort to hold onto my grandfathered plan. Have been studying this thread in preparation. Sat down tonight, followed your directions and it works - perfectly - first time around.

While I wish there was a work-around (short of rooting) for the pre-installed bloatware - for now I can deal.

Thank you again for the detailed instructions - I'm thrilled to get it first time through!

I tried out 4 different USB ports.
Nothing worked.

Tried another USB-Micro USB cable from an HTC Incredible S.
Nothing worked.

Still stuck on the adb devices part.
Any clue why they can't find my device?
I really want to free up my memory.

Help is really greatly appreciated! :)

Kinda stumped, does the PC recognise the phone when it's plugged in at all? Even in disk drive/USB Storage mode?

Have you tried re installing HTC Sync?

OK - I don't remember reading this within the thread - so maybe someone can enlighten me?

I did this fix the other night and it worked beautifully. Last night I went to download an app and got the message I didn't have enough memory. When I went into the phone to look - all the apps that downloaded to my SD card the night I did this fix "suddenly" were on my phone!

I manually moved them to the card and got back "almost" all the memory I had before this happened.

The phone did update I believe. Does that then undo the fix and I have to redo it? Or is it just quirky and there is no explanation for how/why this happened?

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can give me any insight.

My PC does recognize the phone during disk drive mode.
However, my PC does not recognize the phone during Charge Mode w/ USB Debugging. It does make a sound to tell me that I plugged in a device.

Reinstalled HTC Sync too.
Still can't detect it :(

That sort of answers a question I've been asked before but haven't known the answer to. It does look as though a system update undoes this process and you'd have to do it again.

Hmm, do you have the full SDK installed, or just the Mini SDK downloaded via here?

Thanks a lot. Was kind of figuring that. Oh well, back to redo the fix when I get home.

Thanks for the verification! :)

I used the Mini SDK from here.
But later, I downloaded the Android SDK Tools, still no luck.

I have a Wildfire S and I've had the problem with too little memory for AGES! I finally tried to solve the problem using this trick - and it works. Kinda. But not completely. I now have it so that I can move certain apps to the SD card and it seems that others are already there. But I still only have about 7 mb of internal memory free, and when I try to download an app that's 8.5 mb (I have over 1 GB free on the SD card), it tells me that I don't have enough memory. What do do? I'm getting pretty desperate here!

hello,
