That's correct. SAMOLED has superior black levels but it's white level (i.e. brightness) is lower then a good lcd like the EVO's. The black levels are what give the EPIC the thru the roof contrast ratio and this combined with the over saturated colors really make the screen pop. The colors aren't terribly accurate but I'm not an graphic designer/artist so I personally prefer the over-saturated colors.

We've already discussed that in this photo, the Epic looks more dull because it is a screenshot of the browser. The browser has its own brightness setting that most people don't know about. It's lower by default to save battery on white pixels. Believe me, the Epic can display some very bright whites. You just gotta turn up the browser brightness setting.

Keep in mind that the more white you display on a SAMOLED, the more battery you will lose. Black is the best for the Epic, as a black pixels means it's not lit up at all (true black).

AAAAAAAARG. Of course you took a picture of the freakin browser. The Epic's browser has it's OWN brightness setting that must be tweaked individually. Menu -> more -> brightness setting. You'll notice it's WAY down. The reason for this is because SAMOLED screens use more battery when displaying white pixels. The Epic has the brightness turned down on the browser by default to save battery life.

The Epic's screen gets JUST as bright a the EVO's. Please take a picture of another app at full brightness.

Exactly, there's no way my vibrant is as dark as that. No way is another phone that much brighter... no way. We need new pics people ...

I was thinking I had seen a review that showed the brightness of the epic was significantly lower than the evo... turns out that in the review I was thinking of they were comparing the AMOLED screens on the incredible and N1... not SAMOLED. So I'll have to wait until Anand posts his review of one of the Galaxy S phones to see how the SAMOLED does in the brightness side of things.

If your going to argue that one is clearly and truly a better phone, your probably splitting hairs. The screens will look comparable as they are both around 4 inches. You really gonna tell me a movie (who the hell watches movies on a 4 inch screen?) will look more clear on one 4 inch screen vs. another? Please. Samsung phone vs. HTC phone? Matter of opinion. Physical keyboard vs. not? Again, matter of opinion. Mine on that is that sliders are fail. Any slider Ive had has messed up at the slider part and had keyboard problems eventually. And after using Swype I would never go back to a physical keyboard.

The EVO does a lot that the Epic doesn't and vice versa. I loved my EVO and to a degree I miss it. One thing that bothers me is the time it takes to charge the Epic. The EVO had a very responsive touch keypad at the bottom of the phone and the Epic's is not that responsive at times. The screen display on the Epic surpasses the EVO and I want to say that I can go longer on my Epic with usage than I can with the Epic. I've toyed around with the notion of getting rid of the Epic for another EVO but I think I will keep this baby and ride it out a little bit more.

I just went EVO to Epic. Side by side I could not ignore the superiority of the Epic screen. Whites on the Epic are truly white, on the EVO they look very yellow in comparison. Blacks are simply ridiculous on the EVO, they are absolutely black. The EVO's black are quite simply gray in comparison. All other colors are MUCH more vibrant on the EPIC. I put my EVO and my Epic side by side and displayed several sets of the same photo on both. In every case the Epic made the EVO look very dull. Text looks quite different on the 2 devices, but overall I would have to say that the Epic text is sharper. Basically the Epic screen completely outclasses the EVO screen.

I also find the Epic to be a lot more responsive than the EVO. Web page scrolling for example is butter smooth on the Epic while on the EVO there is always this little hint of choppiness, it's not bad by any means but in comparison to the Epic it is not nearly as smooth.

The speaker on my Epic is quite a bid louder than the one on my EVO. I watched a few Youtube videos and the audio coming out of the phone was really remarkable, easily the best phone speaker I have ever heard. This extends to ring tones that are quite loud, they are significantly louder than my EVO.

The ear speaker is MUCH clearer than the one on my EVO. I always felt that my EVO ear speaker left a lot to be desired, it was quite scratchy at times. I have heard no such issues with the Epic.

I really like the way the Epic ear speaker is flush with the screen. On the EVO the ear speaker sits in a recessed area where dust loves to settle in.

Now the bad news; I'm not a fan of the capacitive buttons on the bottom of the Epic. They are not nearly as responsive as those on my EVO. I could also do without the chrome trim (and if I get the nerve may mod it) but other than that, I really have no other complaints.

P.S. Is the chrome trim an easily removed/replaced piece? I would love to get another one and experiment with blacking it out.

So far, the there's only a few things I miss about the Evo, the keyboard, and 2.2 froyo flashlight app. The epic keyboard is ok, but I liked the Evo keyboard better.

So far so good on the Epic except for one annoying thing. When I enable the Ocean live wall, after a few minutes the phone's screen becomes unresponsive to any touch. I cannot turn off the screen, or move anything on the screen. It just becomes a screen and i can't move anything on the screen.

I hope this is a fluke, I might try other live wall paper and see if this happens again. It doesn't happen with any other non animated wallpaper.

Except for that one flaw, the Epic has been pretty good so far. I just like how the epic fits in my hand and the overall performance is a tad faster then the Evo.

I would recommend this over the Evo as it just seems like and feels like a better overall phone. The Evo is a very good phone but the Epic is just better overall.

Oh yeah, I use Launcher Pro right away and didn't bother with TW, it's so much better.

My coworker came into my office yesterday with her new Epic so I could help her set it up. (She is new to Android.) The first thing I did was compare her screen to my EVO's screen and the Epic's screen was noticeably crisper and seemed a little more Hi-Def than my EVO's screen. That said, the screen wasn't THAT much better than the EVO's. In all honesty as far as screens go, I thinks the iPhone's screen is the best I've seen but the Epic's is a very close second.

All in all the Epic seemed like a solid device, but I would not swap my EVO for one. I just don't trust that Samsung will support this device the way it should. Time will tell if my concerns are well-founded. I'll definitely be paying attention over the next several months to see how timely Samsung's Froyo update will be. To me, the most significant distinction between EVO and Epic is not specs, but rather if you were to walk into a store today, the EVO comes with Froyo out of the box while the Epic will be getting Froyo "soon."

I hate saying I was wrong... but I was. The EVO's screen gets brighter. Not by a LOT, but it is. You can see it in person. At 100% brightness, the whites on the EVO truly pop. Without the EVO next to it, the Epic looks gorgeous. Just not as bright.

Amen regarding the "copy and paste". Copy and paste on the epic blows chunks. It's horrible. And even once you get it copied, you may not be able to paste it.

I would love to know how to paste a phone number into my phone dialer on the epic. :-( Even my windows mobile 6.1 phone automatically turned ten-digit numbers separated by "() -." characters into links to make a phone call. I was annoyed to learn the epic doesn't spot phone numbers and let you click to dial, but much MORE annoyed to discover I can't paste a copied number into the phone dialer.

Looking at this picture, the EPIC looks 10 times better than the EVO. The EVO screen looks washed out. The first thing anyone who knows what they are doing does when they buy a new HDTV is calibrate it. The brightness is the very first thing that gets turned down. In the store, the manufacturers crank up the brightness and sharpness to make the picture "pop" in comparison to the units around it. This doesn't create a better picture. All it does it create a washed out, over-saturated, and artificial edge-filled picture.

The EPIC's screen owns the EVO's. There is no Debate to be had here.

Not sure how well it comes across from the camera, but the Evo just looked washed out, and some highlights are definitely blown in the winter scene in the trees.The Evo might be a touch brighter but that's just due to the lack of a good black level or contrast.

On another note, I don't think many realize how much Sense really cleans up Android's lack of refinement and shortcomings; ie. copy and paste, weak email functionality, even T9 dialing that TouchWiz at least addresses. Some have called it dated, but people that are used to "real" smartphones of the past took many features for granted and have taken steps backward switching to Android or had to rely on 3rd parties to bring some of that functionality over. Sense is the closest of all overlays to somewhat get it, that this is a smartphone and not a glorified feature phone.

I couldn't agree more! Most of the posters in this thread are EVO fanboys that can't admit that their phone is already irrelevant. The EPIC is far superior to the EVO in almost every way. Go back to your EVO forum and take your playa-hatin attitudes with you.

The topic is about Evo and Epic, so you will get Evo and Epic fanboys. All phones get irrelevant sooner or later. Looking at how the other Galaxy S phones are doing on the other networks as compared to their HTC counterparts, I am thinking the Epic might become irrelevant before the Evo but that is my personal opinion. They are both great phones with their strong points.

You can use widget locker for the look but to get it identical you have to be rooted and load a custom rom. cm6 has it preloaded and Fresh's new rom has it as a download. I personally like cm6 way better.

I agree that the Epic screen is better than the EVO's. I wasn't trying to say that the EVO is better. My point was ONLY to show that the EVO gets brighter. That is all. And my camera didn't do a very good job at capturing the screens. I didn't think that my EVO looked bad at all at full brightness. But the EVO colors were definitely worse than the Epic's.

Also, Angry Birds looks better on my Epic than on my EVO

Epic feels like more of a phone than the evo, which felt like a tablet

The buttons are easier to hit

Haptic feedback is much better

Keyboard is awesome

Everything is easier to navigate to because of the smaller screen...having said that, i do miss the bigger screen

I miss the kickstand..they really gotta make a removable back cover with a kickstand built in!

im a little uneasy about the slight wobble to the slider...with the evo it was just one solid piece, but with the epic i worry about it getting loose. i feel noticeable give when i press down on the screen

its really annoying to unlock the phone from the side button and have the slider move along with your hand...like you cant use the other side of the phone to press against. i remedies this by installing nolock which takes the lockscreen away and allows you to wake the screen from the volume keys

screen is much much sharper

keyboard is an excellent gripper to browse with, and the directional keys are convenient

No Lock doesn't work for me. It keeps my phone awake after I hit power.

I agree on both points...

Washed out is a good description of the evo lcd at full brightness. The evo is brighter but it's base black level is not even in the same ballpark as the epic. Good black level really makes the picture pop.

Sense is the best UI on android... I'm on WM looking to jump to android and unfortunately the phones I like the best are the Droid X and the Galaxy S phones... of course neither one has sense. HTC has been refining Sense for years on WM and now Android (formerly called Touch Flo, the Touch flo 3d, now sense).
