Found an iPod Touch on the bus today

The Outcome:

The person never replied to their email but they did have the phone turned off so I ended up calling one of their contacts and left my number. They were able to get in touch with me this morning and the owner had a happy reunion with their iphone4. He even tried to offer me $20 but I was like no thanks. I just did what I would want someone else to do for me if I lost my phone.

That's great!

I'd have to say that the phone is... PROTECTED TO THE MAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aww, why couldn't it have been you, Shawn, that found my Nexus One :( I could have had a happy reunion with it!

So to sum it up. OP comes on here asking advice. Many pieces of good advice are given as to find the owner quickly. OP ignores everyone and puts up flyers. OP gets fake emails and gives up. OP keeps ipod touch without trying any of the various ways of finding the owner. Shawn actually does the right thing in a related incident.

I would personally have tried my hardest to find the owner. Forget lost and found or the police department as those are worthless options these days. I recently had an experience where I almost lost my EVO. I was sure someone swiped it but an employee at a store found it and called me. I was so relieved that I would never keep a phone that wasn't mine because I wouldn't want to be in that position and it's so easy to find the owner these days.
