Help Friend with MicroSD Problem

Hey guys my friend has this phone and he dropped it. It managed to survive but he thinks it may have cause it to stop reading the MicroSD card. Whenever he inserts it it says, "The phone is unable to mount the card and that the SD card is ready to be taken out."
What should he do?

did he take out the card and re insert it?

if that doesn't work take it out and see if it can be read by a reader on a pc...back up files to pc, format card, put files back on it and try again
