Help From 3GS to LG Optimus M

Newbie
Basically I'm new to the Android system and little by little i'm figuring it out. I went to metro and bought the Optimus M, it's not the best phone in the world but it works smoother than I expected.

I'm also learning the terminology little by little, I've read a couple of threads on rooting already.


My only complaing is why would they advertise a 3G phone but the phone is only 2G?

Is it possible thru some roms or rooting or flashing, that us as "M" owners can get this phone to work the way is was design to?

one other question, I want to root the phone but I need a reason to, what's the main reason to root the phone?

Don't compare iOS to android, it's apple to oranges. Forget what you know about iOS....I used iOS as well. Android is a different beast.

Some apps, require root so they can perform certain functions that are normally restricted. From what I hear, rooting voids the warranty. But...what are they really gonna do?

So the phone does support 3G... from what I can tell, but Metro doesn't have 3G. If you could take the phone to Sprint or VZW and "flash" it to their network, I am sure it would work @ the adivertised speed. But for the most part the phone works like it should.

When i use Metro's 1X, it feels like Tmobiles Edge connection, a little pokey but it gets the job done.
 
I talked to someone on metro live assistance on the internet, and they told me that metro has had 3G for 3 years.

I read specs in the owners manual and it says the phone has 1.7 and 2.1 aws, if im not mistaken those are 3G frequencies.
 
I think metro has capped it off so that they can sell the crappy samsung craft, I think they're thinking if they have 2 3G phones, they may not sell the other. The craft is a 4G phone but in non 4G areas it works in 3G.

Metro has had 3G in like 3 of their 18 markets (Dallas, Detroit, maybe LA) for 3 years. They never really got their 3G upgrade plan going for all their markets. They decided to skip 3G and go straight to LTE. They were able to beat Verizon in turning on LTE markets and beat Verizon to selling LTE phone. Whereas AT&T is STILL upgrading their 3G network and is not expected to go to LTE until end of 2011.

So, when Metro live assistance said they've had 3G for 3 years, they are reading some PR statement.:p Not 3G in all their coverage area by any means.

PLUS, over in another forum the guys are saying in the few 3G markets Metro had, those are also the same markets where Metro has turned on LTE first. And now they say when they are out of the LTE footprint they don't even get 3G anymore. They fall back to 2G, like all the other markets have. As if Metro has repurposed the 3G equipment for LTE -- or dismantled the 3G equipment, or something? :confused: I know they want to push everyone to LTE...

So, yes this is a 3G capable phone. But good luck finding 3G with Metro!
 
Here is an idea, mero has 90% coverage in the US right? This has to be with roaming onto other cariers. I wonder if roaming onto another cdma carrier (sprint, verizon, etc...) would let us connect to the roaming provider at 3G.

I am able to foce the phone to only connect to AWS through the secret programming menu. However, I am in Miami, FL and it never finds any AWS connections so I'm guessing Metro doesnt have it setup in my area.

How do you get the menu to appear?

Wow everyone on here seem to be very knowledgeable, yet clueless about 2G 3G wireless standards. 1XRTT ( 1X ) does make use of 3G standards. 3G is not about data speed and the phone really had nothing to do with download/upload speeds more of tech stuff such as power control on the uplink/downlink and paging witch give you better call quality and longer battery life. Sprint/Verizon has EVDO which makes use of an entire carrier and divides it up into time slots. Yes EVDO is much faster than 1XRTT ( 1XRTT use of multiple Walsh codes, voice only needs one) but they are still 3G standards. AT&T has just played with different things such as phone versions to really get everyone screwed up so you don’t blame the carrier for the slow speeds. That being said No one really has 4G yet as it’s set standard has set minimum down load speeds but they are up in the 100M range. What the US carriers are calling 4G (LTE/WIMAX) are faster and a big step to 4G but not there yet.

I know about the standards, but the simple answer is 1x is more 2.5G than 3G. It's not 3G.

That's why our Optimus Ms never say "3G". Because Metro doesn't have 3G.

In fact, Metro no longer offers EVDO in any of their markets ever since they turned on LTE. Used to offer it in Dallas and Detroit but they no longer do.

It's still 2.xG. Metro only had 3G in two markets, even they admit that. Now they don't have that, they disbanded it for LTE. And everywhere else, they only had/have 1X (2G. OK, 2.xG).

If Metro themselves say they never had 3G, who are you to say they do? :)

They went straight from 2.xG to LTE -- which they are calling "4G". But right now everyone's LTE is more like 3.5G. No one has true 4G.
