From Pre to Evo: First Impressions...

I've had my pre since last years launch and I'm really on the fence about getting the evo. Anyone who went from the pre to the evo please give me your honest opinion on how you feel about the change, both pro and con. It would really help me in my decision. Thanks...

im selling my pre. i hated it. the evo is better in all ways. there is no comparison.
 
I've had the Pre since release. I am only missing PreWare and swipe delete from WebOS. I'm sure as I get more familiar with the EVO I won't miss PreWare anymore. The onscreen keyboard had me worried but since installing Swype I could never go back to physical keys on a mobile touchscreen device. Go ahead and get the EVO. You will never look at the Pre the same way again.
 
You have 30 days to try it out.

The pre is a pos. Others will disagree but ultimately it failed and for very good reason. Try out the evo, if you don't like it just return it. There is no comparing the two the evo is leaps and bounds better.

This EVO is nothing short of incredible. The speed is far better than the pre, the screen is amazing, pictures crystal clear. Internet browsing is even faster and nicer because of the difference in screen size.

As of now my cons have only come in the way of unfamiliarity. I have had small issues with pictures on contacts and how exactly to do small things like that. Again, these are things that will improve with time. I was also a little worries about going to a touch keyboard but I must say after 24 hours I am typing much foster on this...mostly thanks to the predictive text/
Automatic spell checker. Your only other concern may be size. That's something that if deal breaker, nothing can be done. Otherwise, you will love this phone...I know I so.

I got pre 6/6/09 and evo 6/4/10 ... I'm extremely impressed.. I was anti-android for some raeson since its inception... and now I wish I woulda just skipped the Pre.. I feel bad for Jon Rubinstein at Palm... it had its potential.. but they failed...

My first impression with the Pre was disappointment at the size.. the Evo takes its place and I'm absolutely not disappointed....

The pre was lacking in many departments ... the Evo takes care of them all...

Bye bye Pre... Palm, I loved you when I bought my first m100 and then my Treo... but unfortunately you're time has come and gone... fade into oblivion...
 
I have had my Pre since launch last year as well. There is only one con I can think of about the EVO so far and that is just not completely knowing how to use it and how everything works. As time goes on, we will see if there are any other things that get added to the list, but right now that is it, and it's not the phone's fault.

PROS:
I love the size! I have tiny girl hands and it does not feel too big to me at all.
The screen is gorgeous in every way.
I was scared about not having a physical keyboard, but the touchscreen is so great, even in portrait, I don't even use landscape.
The talk to text is great.
The speakerphone sounds fantastic....another EVO owner and I both had them on speaker and it was clear as day.

Consensus: This biznatch is AWESOME! Go get an EVO!
 
Oh another thing, if you use the EVO for a day and then try to use the Pre you will feel claustrophobic with the screen size of the pre. I picked up my gf's pre late yesterday and thought it would be really hard to go back to that screen size after using the EVO all day.
 
I am coming from the Pre and so far in the last 24 hours...I LOVE IT!!! The interface is much smoother than the Pre. One thing I could not stand with the Pre was how laggy it was. Now I have to get used to how huge the Evo is. I pulled it out at the store and checked my messages and I felt like everyone was staring at me...LOL
 
OP, why don't you take advantage of the 30 days and try for yourself? Best way to get a taste of android and the EVO.

I did nearly the same thing last night. I had to get some contacts off of the Pre which made me realize how wonderful the EVO screen truely is. I could never go back to the Pre. On another note, the responsiveness of the EVO made the Pre seem extemely sluggish.
 
I have had a pre from launch also. There is a learning curve just figuring out all this phone has on it. It's great. Speech to text is great. Talked to my son on his Iphone, he could not believe how well it works and fast. so many features. I have been using it heavily today getting contacts, pictures, music, movies on the phone. Battery lasted slightly over 6 hours. the Pre would have not done 1/2 that. So far other than the light leakage at the bottom of the screen, I am extremely glad I made the switch.
 
As of now the only cons are just not knowing enough about android, but that passes with time.

P.S. I've caught myself trying to gesture swipe to delete things a couple times lol

I really miss that. It is much quicker. Maybe someone will compile an app that gives the EVO that functionality.

I have also been ignoring calls by swiping up when the call comes in. Pre-tty funny.
 
Battery better, functions better, better build quality. Had my Pre since launch day and don't miss it one bit. Son has it now. Loved it at the time but the EVO blows it out of the water. Virtual keyboard is really easy to get used to, especially in the landscape mode. You won't regret it at all.

Most likely I will. It's just that as a lot of launch day pre owners will attest to, we felt a bit like beta testers with the sub par build quality issues along with the initial launch of webos that left a lot to be desired. I'm somewhat satisfied with my pre and the improvements they have made with webos but that experience really has made me skeptical about "launch day" purchases. I do really appreciate all the feedback. As long as the build quality is solid and the included version android os is comparable, usable and stable it looks like it will be a go for me considering froyo is around the corner. My other concern was battery life but from what I've read it's no worse than the pre's, and with a considerably larger screen, so that won't matter. Thanks again everyone, this has been very helpful.

Understood, I was a launch day pre owner that went through 4 pre's over the past year due to hardware issues. Getting the EVO at launch day is a bit different. One, HTC has been making similarly designed phones for a while so it is not a whole new hardware design and two, android isn't completely new.

With that I figured I'd jump in to try it and not be as much a beta tester this time around.
 
My Sprint Pre was awesome, but too laggy. Apps took forever to open, and the browser wouldn't respond much until websites were fully loaded.

I also kept getting the out of memory message. The EVO is tons better!
 
I came from the Pre and I don't have any regrets. I had some pause about switching at first but once I got the Evo I haven't thought about the Pre at all.

Launch day Pre and EVO owner here.

Pros:
- EVO is light years faster at everything. Opening apps on the Pre was a 5-10s affair.
- Screen screen screen. Once you go big you DON'T want to go back
- Browser is faster by far
- As good as cards are for multitasking, keeping them open was unreasonable since you lost your main screen space
- Marketplace makes the Pre App store look like a highway orange peddler compared to a shopping mall.
- Build quality. Do I really have to explain?
- Loudspeaker is no contest compared to Pre
- Multiple Home screens are a godsend and make things easy to get to
- Droid stock customization beats Pre stock. PreWare makes it even.
- WIDGETS!
- Did mention Build Quality??


A Wash:
- Cameras are about equal believe it or not. Pre video may be slightly better tbh
- Keyboards. Physical Pre keyboard was good, but the screen size of EVO more than compensates
- Call Quality is pretty equal
- FM Radio on EVO is ok but flaky
- Long Home Screen Press for multitasking is equal to Pre card mgmt to me

Cons:
- Notifications on Pre is better than Android. Not light years, but better
- The gesture area is better than the back button on EVO
- Synergy is probably the biggest thing I miss. One mail client for all my mailboxes, One messaging client for SMS and IM. Contact aggregation is better than EVO.


Absolutely no regrets leaving the Pre. WebOS was special and changed the way I think of usability and data integration on a phone - but dam that hardware. Android is no slouch in S/W at all and Froyo 2.2 closes the limited gap considerably.
