Root From Sense to AOSP, Kernals and SBC...

Wow, I don't check out the forum for weeks it seems and there is a TON of new stuff that I don't feel like I know about or even understand! Anyway, Currently I'm running Stock android 2.2 (Sense) with a netarchy SBC kernal.

It's time I upgrade to Android 2.3 and I'm not sold yet on a stock rom, custom sense, or AOSP but here are some concerns/questions-

1- I understand flashing a new rom, etc. but does it matter if your current kernal is compatible with the new rom? I'm guessing not since roms generally have their own kernal, correct?

2- Are the current netarchy SBC kernals compatible with the Gingerbread roms? I know that's pretty a pretty general question, but understand the differences in a lot of kernals. Where I'm confused a little is finding the compatibility between kernals and 2.3 roms as opposed to what I'm used to- 2.2.

3- I understand that you need an AOSP kernal for AOSP roms and so on... but is there an SBC kernal for AOSP roms? Is that even necessary since AOSP seems to use less battery/be more efficient anyway? How about the use of SBC kernals for sense 2.3 roms? Is the newer system wired for better battery life before custom kernals?

Thanks for being patient with me here! lol

Ok so with the gingerbread update came a new stock kernel for gingerbread. This stock kernel is for all of the gingerbread sense roms. Unfortunately, there is no custom kernel yet for these roms. We are currently waiting for htc to release the source code for the kernel.

As far as aosp roms go there are plenty of aosp generates kernels out there. check the roms/kernel sticky to get a list of them. Try the tiamat kernel. I believe a new one was just released.

1. Yes it does matter if a kernel is compatible w/ the ROM you're running, AOSP kernels only work w/ AOSP ROM's, Sense w/ Sense...

2. As it stands right now there isn't a custom kernel for GB.

3. Yes, SBC is available for AOSP kernels. Check out the ROM's and Kernel's download page link referenced by Ocn.

Ahhh ok, it's making sense now that I know no custom kernals are available for GB yet. Now that I look at AOSP kernals more closely I'm seeing the SBC options. In the first question I was asking more about if you need to flash a stock kernal before switching from Sense to AOSP, but I guess that wouldn't make sense since Roms contain their own stock kernals... Thanks for the help guys. As a separate but related question- How are people liking the stock GB kernal battery life?

I read a lot of mixed feelings when it comes to that and it seems to heavily depend on which GB ROM you're running. I'm running MikG, and I can go a whole 24 hours w/ light to moderate usage and still have 70 something percent left on my battery, so battery life on this kernel is working great for me.

it depends on the rom at least for me. i am getting ok battery life with the mikg2.3. it is no where near as good as my cm7 tiamat rom/kernel combo. with that combo i was getting 18-35 with moderate to heavy use. but now, i get maybe 12-18 hours. enough to get me through the day.
