I knew I'd read this somewhere before. I'm glad I didn't imagine it. I actually mentioned that I'd read this somewhere in a post on a similar subject a few days ago.

I do that and when I press the search button it takes me to a Google search page with lots of sites to visit. No Privacy tab appears. Next to where I type Privacy is a Google icon. If I press it icons of all the searchable items appear. Which one should I choose?

You need to search within settings. For some strange reason it wouldn't show up for me when I was using Swype to input 'privacy' and I had to briefly switch back to the stock keyboard to get it to appear.

Yep that worked for me. You then get the backup and restore options:

Back up my settings (ticked)

Automatic restore (ticked) "restore applications' data from backup when they are installed"

So it doesn't restore apps - you'd need to do that yourself, but it will restore their data if they use the cloud.

Mmmm but how? Do I need to disable all the other searchable options so only Settings is shown because I am just getting routed out to a Google search as well?

EDIT:
Yep, that's the answer. Knocking out "Web" from the searchable options has now searched the phone instead of Google even though the search box still looks exactly the earlier Google search one.

did you have to revert to Touch Input for the keyboard? Seems daft you have to untick Web in the search settings just to find something on the phone. Perhaps it will be sorted when Gingerbread arrives.

Suffering the same problem having flashed from 2.1.

Have done the settings search for Backup but no option to backup from SD card where the backup in 2.1 stored the backup data:eek:

Lost all contacts, will be re-syncing phone later to try and recover which is maddening!

If you want to backup your contacts go into

Peope>menu>import/export>export to SD card>choose account>confirm export.

To restore

People>menu>import/export>import from SD card> choose account.

am i the only one who has upgraded to froyo, follows all the steps provided, and then nothing happens when i select to automatically restore?

I'm really getting frustrated now, because I'd like to have my contacts in my phone by 2moro at the latest -.-

Hi all, I have had the same issue, but have followed the advise on the thread and found the Privacy tab...yeah.

I have a question, does anybody know how to back up there sms to either Gmail or the PC....it is frustrating the hell out of me.

Thanks

Bek

Can anyone confirm 100% this really restores one's data after a factory reset?

My Desire is acting up these days, I'm thinking of resetting it to get it straight. Please advise :)

for backingup contacts/people , go to All Apps , select people - press menu button , tap import/export, tap to export to sd card

This will only backup contacts, the backup option people are wanting to know about also backs up settings, etc.

Here's an answer: IT DOESN'T  nor did the factory reset help resolve my problems

I was looking for it as well. It would return the phone to its backup state in the event a reset or corruption occurred. Android update must have used it going to 2.2 since the phone booted with everything configured as it was before, apps, sms, email, accounts and personal changes. Not useless and I certainly have the option to use third party apps but this should have remained. I called Telus and they were not aware that it was removed. In fact anything I call them about they are not aware of a solution even if it does exist. Its up to the user whether we us it or not. As described on the video support of Telus's website it sound perfect for me and I am sure others.

Search button (far right of track ball)
Press the blue g top left
select setting from drop down list
Search privacy

I found it through hear

The backup will only ever restore to the same main board. If you ever need it replaced, your backup will be useless.

I recommend Mybackup pro. Much more reliable IME.

Yeah and same with MyBackup. it would not even allow a view of the backup it created with the SD in another phone. I rebuilt it manually.

You 1st need to put your gmail account details in the phone, and if it was rooted before, carry out rooting before restoring.

I use SMS Backup+ It backs up my sms messages and call logs (if selected) to my gmail account (Creates a label for SMS and Call Log in your gmail) and can restore back to phone if needed. Can also be set to backup automatically for new calls\texts

Hope it helps

A great little app that supports Android phones and performs a full Contacts backup, SMS backup, Call history, Calendar entries, and shows the phone technical data is MyPhoneExplorer: FJ Software Development
It works perfectly with my HTC Desire. Saves all the heart ache with what's been said above. You can create a backup of everything and perform a restore when required.

BTW: you will need to install the MyPhoneExplorer app to the phone from the Android Market then you can sync through either WiFi or USB connection.

Hope it works for you.

I'll look into that and see how it works. I have a different phone now which has a PC based manual backing up process. But I don't think it can do all the date. NOTES are in as seperate app "Note everything" but backiing it up is imperative.

when it comes to all this I realize how great my Palm Treo was, one button and all is sync'd and backup up. Everything even installed apps are backed up to the PC. But alas this is progress and the data is spread all over like a dogs breakfast.. so to speak.
