Froyo and Android OS

What is Froyo? And how do I know what version of the Android operating system I have? I keep hearing about Android 2.2 - and I don't know if that is what is on my HTC Desire. If I don't have Android 2.2, how do I get the update? Thanks!

Iterations of the Android OS (version 1.5 and up) are named after deserts (from C onwards) in alphabetical order.

1.5=Cupcake
1.6=Donut
2.0/2.1=Eclair
2.2=Froyo=Frozen Yogurt
2.3=Gingerbread (only available on Nexus S at the moment)
2.4 or 3.0 unconfirmed=Honeycomb (expected to come out mid-2011)

If you go to Settings-->About Phone, you would be able to see which version you are on (pretty sure 2.2 is available for Desire, probably depends on your carrier).
