Root Froyo Development

Likely it will never support be supported on our CPU, so there's not much to hope for there in 2.2.

But, the implementations of both the JIT and "apps2sd" are much cleaner in froyo than the hacked-together solutions we have for 2.1 (not to downplay how nice they are---I love the JIT).

This might be a noob question, but why would 2.2 be any better than what we are working with right now if its just the same capabilities? I.e. apps2sd and JIT. Why would this "hacked-together solution" not be as good as anything LG can release? Is it just because their programmers are more efficient than the devs on here? Please, no offense at all to what you guys do tho, WE ALL LOVE IT! I just don't understand because we are pushing the limits of the processor and drellisdee is writing better and better kernels while trident and others are making amazing ROMS, what are we missing?

The Ally is far more capable than you think. The stock rom is crippled on purpose to make the Droid line more attractive. Anyone running velocity can attest to that. I wouldnt be suprised to see the official update untill after xmas because VZW doesnt want the Ally taking away from their droid line sales. The Ally with 2.2 would be the best bang for the buck device.

Compared to the older versions Android 2.2 has a great compiler which helps the system tremendously. Google Promises 2x Faster performance compared to the older versions and rendering of Javascript is now faster compared to previous versions.

If your happy now wait till you see the speed and performance boost its really a great advanceme in 2.2.

Keep your eyes peeled for a dump, ota, or rom for it or the soon to be out LG chic E720.

Looks like the HTC Legend is running the same hardware as the LG chic E720.

LG E720 Optimus Chic Specs | Technical Specifications | PDAdb.net - Comprehensive Database of Smartphone, PDA, PDA Phone, PNA, netbook & Mobile Device Specifications
HTC Legend A6363 Specs | Technical Specifications | PDAdb.net - Comprehensive Database of Smartphone, PDA, PDA Phone, PNA, netbook & Mobile Device Specifications

Now this isnt the same as our Allys MSM7627 but a variant, the MSM7227.

I saw a dev got Froyo running on the Legend so maybe his rom might be of some help?

[ROM] Azure; CyanogenMod 6 - xda-developers

I want to get in to rom development so if someone can pm me some good resources/intros for ally dev I would love that.

Okay so I've been very busy lately and unable to do anything on this project :( I will be resuming work on Tuesday though. Sorry, but like I've been saying, I'm not getting very far, don't get your hopes up.

lost soul can you post a last_kmsg from your attempts? I tried again and got init.rc to mount the mtds and exec bins from sbin and system/bin but still crashes with pid exits then service manager crash. Still wont boot but a little closer.

Yes I can, but I'm not sure how to pull it out, where do I get it from? Thanks!

When it fails booting and reboots to recovery. adb pull /proc/last_kmsg

If these guys got 2.2 running on Ally, it most likely would be just as good as (or better than) LG's version. Regarding what has been accomplished so far vs. Froyo:

On 2.2, you can selectively install some apps on your SD card, vs. linking your apps folder to a folder on the card, making *all* your apps go there.

In addition, the JIT compiler is just... a different compiler. I haven't used it, but drellisdee has said it's even faster than the one he backported to 2.1.

The thing isn't what LG can release, it's what Google *has* released. 2.2 has a lot of great stuff that would be hard to get running in the same way on 2.1 without a lot of changes in the code (which is why it's a major release of Android---there were a lot of changes).

In addition, some of this stuff (custom kernels, overclocking) applies to 2.2 as well. So the same improvements here could be even better there.

So, do we *need* 2.2, especially with devs like these around? No. Does it carry some improvements, even in light of the unofficial stuff? Yes.

EDIT: Oh, and like someone else said, the 50% bug, if it exists, is fixed in 2.2.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see this out of Verizon. They absolutely LOVE the Droid line, and the salesmen push them hard. If the Ally was even close to being comparable to the Droid 2 in performance, it would walk all over the Droid 2's sales-the keyboard on the Droid 2 is just that bad. IMO-it's not always about having the most power "under the hood", it's about how efficiently you use the available power.

I'm getting closer to froyo booting up. I've fixed the mem map issue and have a working kernel/ramdisk. I'm just trying to debug a few services and binarys that are preventing the froyo userspace from booting. I have usb adb access on froyo now too to help in debugging.

Awesome! glad to here that.

Many thanks! to everybody on android forums, everybody, does such excellent work!

Glad to hear it. I just got this phone for my wife to replace her Motorola Devour.

If you run in to trouble, you should check over at CyanogenMod (they are willing to help out). Plus, it is a great/stable ROM, and would love to see it on there.

Keep up the good work!!!

You, sir, are my hero.
:) Glad to know we have so much progress. I would not be surprised if the Ally never gets an "Official" update to Froyo. Thanks to people like you, we have a hope.

Bad news guys. I'm still very far from getting froyo to boot as I can't yet get mediaserver and zygote running to bring up android runtime. Now the really bad news is I have to give my ally back to work today or tommorow. If anyone has a cheap ally from an insurance claim etc please contact me or dots. Condition doesnt matter as long as it boots and touch screen works. Phone will not ever be activated will be development only so it doesn't matter esn/meid status.

Unfortunately, I don't have the means to help you out with a phone.

However, for all of the work you've already done for the Ally, I wouldn't mind if Froyo never makes it. I know from a development standpoint that the accomplishment would be tremendous, but you've already made our phones perform exponentially better than they were out of the box.

Thanks again for all of the hard work you've put in.

I'll keep my eyes on ebay to see if one comes up cheap with a bad esn...
