Froyo moved to novemeber?

I may be short, but this issue is hardly going over my head. I buy my devices for what they do NOW, and not what they MIGHT be capable of in the future. Heck, I was more excited for the GPS update than I am for the froyo update because GPS was one thing I expected my phone to do out of the box. But froyo? Perhaps gingerbread? Those will be awesome when they come. In the meantime, however, I'm loving my Vibrant for all it does.

So if you bought Windows Vista on release day, you'd be fine with all of the features and bugs it had and would call anyone who wanted said bugs fixed and new features added a whiner right? Yea, that's what I thought. I bought this phone not only for what it could do on July 15th, but also for the promise of what new things it could do once it got the 2.2 update.

I, like you, like my Vibrant for the things that it does. I sure as Hell wouldn't be happy if Samsung would keep it at 2.1 though. Let's face it, 2.1 was already outdated on July 15th anyway!

I actually do have a Vista machine that because of purchase date, did not get a free update to Windows 7. So I did not pay to update. It still works fine for what I need, and I'm still happy with it's performance.

And that's the point. Android is pretty fantastic. And the updates and improvements they've made over a mere 2 years is staggering. They are dealing with many different phones running many different versions, so yeah, it may be delayed or in some cases not possible. It's not a perfect system, and there have been folks in the past that do have a decent argument (Behold II, Click). I was a first adopter G1 owner, then MyTouch 3G, now Vibrant. Now that the GPS fix has made my phone what it was advertised to be in the first place, I'm happy. My buddy has a EVO with 2.2. I don't feel inferior or left behind in some phone measuring contest.

Yeah, Apple cranks out updates on time. They have one phone to write and update for. 2 if you count the 3GS. If you have a 3G or 2G? Forget it, you got left behind, just like many other models of Android phones. It's a fast changing industry and they're trying to keep up with each other. I'll always be in the crowd that prefers a better version that's been tested over a rushed to market one that if it was REALLY buggy, would have this place whipped into a frenzy of all caps posting.

Excellent post.

Really? Naw, that would never happen here... You nailed it with this statement!

^^^agreed.

It makes it a little harder to compare Apple vs Android because Apple does in fact only have the iphone to worry about when it comes to updates whereas there are over 100 phones out there running the Android OS.

Also,

Samsung has released the update and now its up to the service providers (at least that's the word lately).

Regardless, Samsung sold 5 million galaxy s phones in the first 4 months they were on the market. That is a HUGE profit for them. I think if Samsung wants to stay on top and have future sales like they did this year they HAVE to be more on top of things with upcoming phones and this 2.2 update needs to be everything that they promised. Each of those 5 million buyers of the Galaxy S is a potential buyer for their next superphone. When you do the math, its 10's of millions of dollars that they could potentially earn just from one new phone. It's a safe bet that we will see 2.2, because if we dont, there will be hundreds of thousands of Galaxy S phones flooding ebay and craigslist and a huge red flag out against samsung. It would kill their phone sales for a very long time.

Well, this isn't exactly my point. In your example, you use an OS that was full of bugs & couldn't really be enjoyed (an OS I deliberately avoided like the plague, btw). In the case of something not working as advertised because of bugs, then yes, people absolutely have a right to complain. Like I mentioned earlier, I was more excited for the GPS fix because it was something that was supposed to work right out of the box.

But, now we're talking about froyo. Yes, it was said that we'd get the update...but IIRC we were never given a specific date. Just a couple different rumored time frames. Like I've also mentioned, if they're delaying it because of programming issues, I'd rather them fix the bugs & deliver a solid update rather than rush the update to shut the masses up.

I understand that Android wants to keep us interested & that's why they announce their OS updates months before we'll ever see them. But, unfortunately that makes people antsy to get them. I kinda miss the Sidekick days where we'd know about OTAs just a couple weeks before they were released. One day we were all going along w/ our Sidekick LXs & the next day BAM...suddenly we have video recording & a more robust media player, among other lil bells & whistles. How cool would it be if were just walking around w/ our phones & suddenly BAM...we have an OS update we had no clue was coming?

Just for clarification, do you mean Google or Samsung making the announcement as Android is just an OS.

When he says "Android" I interpret that as Google.

That's "she" & you're right. Sorry for the confusion. I'm referring to how they've already announced Honeycomb (And Ice Cream? Or is that just a rumor?) even though we will not see these operating system versions for many, many months.

Forgive me pantlesspenguin, "she" it is! :o

2.2 will come out whenever it is released. whether it be this month, next month, or even december. i don't care. as long as it work smoothly then i'll be happy.

New Youtube app is out and it's pretty sweet.

Oops, only for 2.2 devices.

I know they didn't promise us 2.2 or give us a date, but the competition has beaten them in delivering 2.2 by 2-3 months and counting.

It's really not good that they've fallen so far behind their competitors.

Agreed. Especially since the Galaxy S series is supposed to be Samsung's "world" phone. I truly expected them to be better prepared.

What is he? It's hard to tell. And how is he famous?

Well, he will be famous when he grows up and becomes a champ. But his namesake is famous, Kahless - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia At the moment he's an adolescent, 21 months, 235 lbs and 35" at the shoulders.

His grand dad is the most awarded English Mastiff in the country of all time and his dad was the number 3 dog in the AKC last year.

Here's a shot from the Vibrant with 2, 3year old boxers with their owner taken at the park:

Wrong.

Engadget is making the same mistake that naive readers here often make, confusing announcements from Europe and trying to apply them to the U.S.

The Samsung announcement is from, and about, the UK.

The Engadget writer, Chris Ziegler, is particulary inept. (He's the same fool who wrote all the bad articles about GPS problems and never got anything right.) Here he proves that he cannot even read a press release or pick up a phone to call Samsung for clarification. He just writes "presumably" this applies to the U.S. What an idiot.

"The Android 2.2 software is being fully tested with UK operators and the upgrade will be available in the UK from early November. We expect all operator versions of the software to be fully tested and downloadable by the end of November"

Sounds like the UK would upgrade early nov, and the US at the end of the month
