Froyo on Hero!

running test4 I got a total of 7.5 hours on a charge..that was with JIT enabled. as a comparison, on Fresh 2.3.3 I can go 26 hours and still have 10% left.. Today I'll try RC0 along with a battery tweak that adjusts the polling and see how it goes

I disabled JIT and am going to give it another shot today. I really really want this ROM to work, I am lobing how snappy the music player and contacts are on 2.2. I am still browsing through all the settings I can to optimize the battery.

I have 2.1.2 on a nandroid that I stuck with for a while which is also great, but 2.2 is so much smoother. Also got 2.3.3 on back burner, which I tried before and wasnt as snappy as 2.1.2 so I didnt keep it long.

Edit: After browsing the irc, saw someone complaining about battery life and they were reccomended to use this battery tweak. Seems to have great results for those on the chat.

I am flashing it now and will see how it goes.

yep... that's the tweak I'm running.. along with RC0 which includes a 5mp camera instead of 3mp.. preview is still broke but camera magic works for that.. so far it's much better... 4:15 minutes since unplugged... 76% left.. still not as good as Fresh 2.3.3 but still better.. and I have JIT enabled..

yes..you only need the standard FAT32 partition..

But this begs another question. I'm currently using DamageControl with apps2sd. I have a swap partition, an ext3 partition, and a fat32 partition. When I do a backup, I use nand+ext. If I flash froyo, will it just ignore my swap and ext3 partitions and just use the fat32? Or do I need to repartition the whole thing as fat32? If it's the latter, that will cause a problem when I want to Nand restore my old DC rom setup.

Anyone using LWP with froyo? I tried the other day, and couldn't believe how well it ran...

do all (or at least the majority) of them work from the market? I haven't bothered trying them much...yet

I tried a Super Mario one, and it was really cool. It ran as fast as if you were playing the game and running through the level as fast as you could... I was totally impressed.

Update.

Way better battery life today.

Disabled JIT, which seems to be the fix for GPS lockup for this ROM. Also downloaded the battery tweak mentioned above. Also enabled compache. I couldnt get a definite answer as to whether compache uses more or less battery.

Phone left the charger at 9 AM fully charged. It is now 730 PM and still have 31% left. Less usage than yesterday but not much.

yep... it ignores ext..

the battery tweak give MUCH better battery life.. as far as compache, yeah, the battery tweak is optimized for that. you get a performance boost plus decent battery. For me, after 5 hours of run time, I was down to 80% that was running JIT on rc0 instead of test4. compared to test4 with no battery tweak where at 7.5 hours I was at 9% left.

I did switch back to Fresh 2.3.3 since I'm on call this week and need a stable ROM running on my phone.

Where did you get rc0? I only see beta4 on the site.

RC0 with no battery tweak, took my phone off the charger at 11am it's almost midnight and I still have 61%. I did spend 20 minutes on the phone also. I have had awesome battery life with this build from the start so I don't know what everyone's issues with battery life is.

I just went to the link above to get the battery tweak and saw a Darchstar rc0 rom. Is this the same one from the IRC channel?

Do you just flash the update over the original, or wipe and flash? Don't want to search through a bunch of posts for an answer.... TIA

According to the pro-tips that popped up on the homescreen the first time I put froyo on, you don't need to wipe between versions of darch's froyo

what differences are there between this new version and the test 4?

good question.. there's no change log for rc0.. but I do know that the camera went from 3mp to 5mp in rc0.. the preview still doesn't work though so you need to use an app like camera magic.

Okay, I flashed Froyo (RC0) for the first time and ran it all day. Here are my impressions.

1) It is VERY fast. No lag at all that I could tell.
2) I never ran stock android much, but 2.2 seems to have a greater level of polish to it. It just has a polished feel to it that's hard to put into words.
3) Bluetooth seems to be better than with 1.5 or 2.1 based ROMS, especially with regards to streaming music. In the past, when streaming music to my BT headphones it would skip occasionally. SO far, I haven't had any issues with skipping with this ROM.
4) Battery life was very acceptable. I didn't use it heavily today, but I took it off the charger about 6am and I was still at 49% at 7pm. This isn't much different than I was getting with the latest DamageControl ROM, which is a plus since it makes my Hero faster while maintaining good battery life. Part of that could be because it's not running Sense. Which brings to my only real negative.

I really like SenseUI and miss it. I've been trying to find widgets to mimick the look of Sense, but not much luck so far. By the way, if anyone has any recommendations I welcome them. If I can get close to the Sense functionality, I'll try to use this rom it everyday. Otherwise I will probably stick with DC for now. If the developers eventually get Sense working on 2.2, it will be awesome.

All in all, I am very impressed with Froyo and I'm excitedly looking forward to future releases from the devs.

Oh yeah, I did have one question. I thought 2.2 was supposed to have wi-fi tethering built in? TO this point I haven't found it. All I see is USB tethering. Is wi-fi tethering in this ROM?

WiFi tethering isn't built in on 2.2 but it's offered as a pay service from the carrier.. or get the wifi tether app from the market.

to make it more SenseUI like... look into beautiful widgets in the market.. it's a pay app but will give you a look and feel similar to SenseUI

to get a bit better battery life, flash the battery tweak listed above
