Root froyo on rooted eris

Like Frisco, I download the ROM to my computer, but we differ at that point (naturally, my way is better... :) ). I have Dropbox installed on by my PC and my phone. I move the zip file to a dropbox folder. Then when I'm actually ready to flash the ROM I'll pull it from the dropbox onto the phone.

Once you move the file from computer to phone hows that work sounds simple.

It's not drop-dead simple, but it's convenient if connecting to your computer is impossible or inconvenient, When you download with Dropbox (in the dropbox app, long press onthe file and choose download from the popup menu), it puts the files into a folder on your SDCard called /Dropbox (or the absolute path is /sdcard/dropbox). Recovery needs to have these files in the root of your SD Card. Using a file explorer app on your phone, such as Astro or Root Explorer, you would navigate to the /dropbox folder and use the edit commands to copy (or move) those files into the top directory of the sdcard (you can press the home button in the top bar of Astro, or go to /sdcard in Root Explorer.)

I've got one more question. I decided since this is my first go around I would try the 1 click method by jcase. It seems incredibly easy even for me! The only thing I want to know before I finish in recovery mode is if there is any way to use one of the two custom time I have downloaded with my phones browser. I have kaosfroyo and xtr3.0.3. When I went into recovery mode on the phone the only Rom was rootme.zip so I know the Roms I've downloaded arnt on my SD card. Is there Amy way to get them there without a computer?

magic1,

Sounds like the files you downloaded might still be in your /sdcard/download folder...if they are, you can move them using something like Astro File Manager. Just download and launch Astro. Navigate to the /sdcard/download directory, long-press the file you want to move, select the "Edit" option, then select the "Move" option. Once you do this, you will see Astro display "Moving file xxxxxxxx" at the top of the screen. Now, just navigate to where you want to place the file (i.e., you should be able to hit the "Up" folder icon to move up one directory (assuming you are in the /sdcard/download directory). Once you've done that, just hit the "Paste" icon to finish moving your file.

Downloading via your browser is a fine way to do things (its simplifies things a bit since you don't have to make multiple transfers). I do recommend using wi-fi since it should be faster. The download will most likely be placed in the /sdcard/download folder, so after its finished, you will have to move the file one leve up to the /sdcard directory (i.e., the top (or "root") directory of the /sdcard.

Finally, its a good idea to verify the checksums of any file that you download, especially large ones, so that you know that you've downloaded complete, uncorrupted versions of your file (this will save you a lot of grief later if you have problems...you'll know that the file is good and will be able to rule that out as an issue). I've updated my MD5 Checksum app to be able verify the checksums on many of the popular ROMs that are out there. Check out this thread that I posted last night: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/168942-phone-rom-checksum-verifier.html

Cheers and good luck!

You have all been a tremendous help. Hopefully I can get this off without a hitch. As long as I can get my Rom onto my SD card I should have it made.

Ladies and gentleman. Boys and girls. I have ROOT! I feel like someone that just won an award and have a list of people to thank! Before i get to that im curious why the gmail icon and weather widget have disappeared. When i go to accounts and sync it says there's an error and to force close. This is my first shot at this so my questions may be in vain but like i said im just curious. Anyway to all of those in this post who made this possible, you rock! Im like a kid at christmas!

Magic, some of the Roms don't use Sense, and they won't have a lot of the stock HTC widgets like the clock and weather on home screen. If you want a more stock looking rom like you are used to make sure it is a Sense rom (kaosfroyo is not a sense rom)

I flashed xtr3.0.3 recommended by frisco. I kinda thought that's what was up with the weather and other widgets. If i want a homescreen weather icon similar to stock can i get one off the market or does it strictly have to be a sense type rom? Either way im thrilled. Havnt had this rom a whole day yet and im already looking at others. Xtrsense and tazz black rain both look cool. When i read about doing a wipe am i understanding it to be a hard reset in the security settings or something else? And do i even need to wipe before i flash a new rom?

If you want that Sense widget, I believe that xtrSENSE should be all set - I have never run it myself.

As for gmail, if you are running xtrROM 3.0.3, after you flashed the ROM, the install will put some additional .zip files on the SD card. One of them is called "xtrROM3.x-StockApps.zip".

What you need to do is restart your phone in recovery (turn off phone, hold the Vol Up key while you restart until you see Amon's Recovery), choose the flash a zip file menu option, and trackball down to that xtrROM3.x-StockApps.zip file. Press the trackball to flash it, them restart the phone - you will then have gmail (as well as the Gallery 3D photo gallery app and Google Talk.)

Ok. Fixing to do just that. Here's another thing im pondering on. What is overclocking and how do i do it. From what i've read i understand it to be setting the speed at which the os and other things run at. Am i close and if so how far do you go?

Yes, xtrSENSE has the stock weather widget/clock. I'm currently on 4.0.6.1.

I ran xtrSENSE 4.0.6.1 briefly and I would definitely recommend it. Other than that I run non-sense roms. I don't miss the rest of sense but I really miss that nice clock/weather widget with the beautiful full-screen animations. Beautiful Widgets is what everybody recommends as a replacement but it just isn't the same.

It has been a while since I ran xtrROM 3.0.3, but I believe that it is overclocked by default to 710 MHz (stock Eris is 528 MHz.) I could be wrong about that.

If you want to overclock, there is an app in the market called SetCPU that gives you a lot of control over the process - you can set the maximum and minimum speeds that the CPU will run (setting a lower minimum speed will mean that when the phone's processor is not being used heavily, it will slow the CPU down, using less power and saving battery.) You can also use SetCPU to set specific speeds to run for specific conditions - slower when the battery level is low, or when the phone gets too hot, or when the display is turned off.

Saying all of that, my suggestion is to run without SetCPU and see how things go. If you feel that the Eris is running too slowly, then you can think about trying it. But, give it a few days; xtrROM is such a fast ROM that I think that you may be fine without using SetCPU.

That's sort of what I thought it was. The rom I'm using now is black rain 3.0. Its got alot of cool features but seems laggy. I tried xtrsense but felt it was rather plain. Xtrrom is very good. I'm trying to take it slow but. I like "surfing" roms to find ones thati like. I did a nandroid backup after I rooted with xtrrom. Do I need to do one each time before I flash a new rom. I've alredy gotten in the habit of doin a wipe before I flash just because I like feeling like I'm starting with a blank slate.

You only need to do a Nandroid backup if you think that you may be interested in going back to the ROM without having to set everything up from scratch again. Nandroid saves the state of your phone at the time that you run it, so that if you restore, you get everything back - your apps and data, settings, etc. - exactly as they were at that the time of the Nandroid.

If you try out a ROM and know that you'll never want to use it again, there is no reason to Nandroid.

Thanks. I went to all things root and found a good post called rooting for dummies. The only thing I don't understand in the prerequisite is that you have to download the rom you want on to your sd card and I'm not sure how to do that or where to go to decide what rom I want. Is every rom similar or do they each have their own tweaks and appeals. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated because as soon as I can get the rom on my card I'm gonna follow the steps in that post and hopefully root this sucker!

I posted an article on my blog a few days ago that has a very simple How-To-Root and install Froyo on an Eris article. Read the article at Run Android 2.2 (Froyo) on Your Droid Eris (How-To) | JonSuh.com

I hope this helps!

jsuh,

Nice blog. I thought I should point-out that jcase would like folks to donate to some worthy cause as "payment" for using his app. You might want to mention this in the blog too (i.e., somewhere near the download link).

Cheers!

Jon, its actually not for jcase, but (taken from jcase's thread): "...This is not a free app, its a try before you buy app. If this app works for you, and you are happy with it. You are required to donate a meal to a homeless youth, or any amount of money to a youth outreach type program."

jcase doesn't want the donations to go to him...just a worthy cause like the above.

Thanks!
