but got there in the end. Instead of error 131, i was gettin error 140 (bootloader issue)

This has worked a treat!!

Seriously.......Many thanks, lovin 2.2

Just did this on my unlocked Telus Desire and it all went smooth. The only thing I've run into is that the weather for my current location is sunny even though it is almost 10pm. The closest major city listed it shown correctly, with the moon. Anyone have this problem? Could it be because the 2.2 update is meant for europe and their are no settings for English(america) only English(UK)?

Tried a battery pull reset and still the same issue.

Edit:

Ok, figured it out, had to go to manage applications and force stop and clear data. That did the trick.

MANY thanks Teppic74 and Evil Genius. The goldcard was very strightforward in the end (I used the 32GB one I bought so I don't have to keep swapping cards). I had a sweaty-palms momnet when I ran RUU as my computer wanted to update the phone's bootloader driver - which it did - but then everything froze. I restarted the computer as requested (swearing quietly), restarted RUU, and hey presto, 10 minutes later a debranded Desire with 2.2. AWESOME!

I've mentioned it before but if you use your goldcard as your day to day card it's wise to have another as backup. If your goldcard becomes corrupt somehow and your phone becomes unbootable, you won't be able to flash the RUU again without the card, and you won't be able to make another if you can't boot.

Teppic, If I use the gold card creator to make a backup goldcard (I am currently using my 8gb gold card as my sd card), can I use the same .img file that I used to make the first one? or do I need to go through the process again to get a new .img file emailed to me?

thanks for your help.

Hi, I need some help.

I sucessfully made a gold card fot my Telus unlocked HTC Desire, and then run the RUU, but then appear an error message:

"Error 130: Model ID error. The ROM update utility cannot update your Android phone. Please, obtain the correct ROM update and try again."

Thanks!!

I had a similar error where the update didn't want to flash, but I recall reading that a reset helps so all I had to do was end the program, reset the phone to factory defaults, re-connect the phone via USB and re-run the program again. It found the phone and started the update. It took about 15mins start to finish.

To be sure it was ok, I played with the new version for a few minutes and then did a factory reset again to make sure I had a clean version to start, and it worked great and has been flawless ever since.

Massive thanks for the how to on this. After the 'news' from orange over the weekend I took the plunge. Everything went smoothly and I'm now running 2.2 and all its perks.

Thanks again.

Hi. Just wanted to say thanks. I'm not particularly technical but I managed to follow the simple steps posted here. I'm now the owner of a locked orange debranded htc desire running 2.2. Much froyo love to you all.

Ok I was originally going to go down the unrevoked custom rom root but after reading the forums there seems to be a lot less problems with this method and it's encouraging to see lots of people in my situation (Orange, sim locked) who have succeeded. I've got a SanDisk 16gb MicroSD arriving this week and the plan is to goldcard that and the current 4gb that came with the phone, keep the 4gb as backup and use the 16gb. I know I have to go through the process twice, once for each card but I just wanted to clarify something, if I copy everything from the current microsd card to a folder on my desktop and then copy back once I've formated/sorted the Goldcard and installed Froyo will I have lost all my contacts? Anyway great forum, great thread cheers!

Hi again

One further follow up question after successfully flashing my device. I opted to create my gold card on a spare sd card which I have put away for safe keeping. If I were really paranoid and wanted another back up could I simply copy the contents of the gold card onto my pc and then paste onto a new sd card or do I have to create a gold card from scratch.
Cheers
Rich

I too was a disgruntled Orange uk customer...but no longer! Everything went very smoothly from gold card creation to rebooting with Froyo now installed and absolutely no branding. I took the precaution of first unlocking the handset(only

The goldcard image is particular to each SD card.

I have done the update on an unlocked Telus running on Rogers. Where has the privacy menu in settings gone?
It was semi-hidden, perhaps by accident. To find it, just use the search feature, tap the G icon to select Settings as the search area, and type "privacy". That will find it for you, but I don't think it's quite the same as 2.1 eclair.

No, each memory card has a unique serial number and the goldcard image that alters sector 0 is also unique to each serial. Once you've created a goldcard though, creating a few more are not that hard since you have the drivers and technique established. I've made three goldcards, one in my Desire, one in my wifes Legend, and an older 1gig card for backup use if one of the main cards goes wonky. You can safely use the goldcard as your everyday memory card in the phone without issues, but a backup is a good idea.

Thanks for the advice. I am still having a problem. When I press the search hard key and then tap the g I get choices of "all", "web" and "app" but not settings. Am I doing something wrong?

Oops sorry. Went into settings search and added apps.

Thanks

Just one question, now I've debranded using RUU and a goldcard, if I restore factory settings in the phone, will that negate the need for a goldcard for future OTA updates?

(My flawed logic suggests that now the phone has been debranded it thinks it's a bog-standard unit, so surely restoring factory settings will "reset" the memory to accept OTA updates as any other unbranded phone would?)

There is a branded O2 Froyo update now available. This will install in the same way, except O2 phones will not need a goldcard. If you've previously applied the above debranded update, this will rebrand your phone and you will only receive O2 updates.

If you did the RUU update, it wiped all the settings, including the APN which will have to be input again. For instance, on Rogers you would use these settings:

APN: rogers-core-appl1.apn
Proxy: <not set>
Port: <not set>
Username: <not set>
Password: <not set>
Server: <not set>
MMSC: http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS Proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 302 (retrieved from SIM)
MNC: 720 (retrieved from SIM).
Authentication type: <not set>
APN type: <not set>

Remember to hit menu and Save the settings, then select it to enable the APN settings. It should connect within a minute.
