Root Frozen Evo 4G help

Newbie
Hello To All,

I was just given 2 EVO 4G phones and one worked just fine but the other one seems to be "Bricked". I have never rooted a phone but i can tell the OS on this phone is not the correct one and i wanted to know if there was any hope in restoring it to factory settings. Also it came without a SD card. Can some one please help me out on this?

I am trying to get it fixed for my daughter.

OK. you are gonna want to go into the bootloader. Hold volume down and power to do that. Hit the option clear storage. Try that and see if it fixes it.

Welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Can boot the phone into the bootloader? Pull battery, Push volume down and the power button at the same time. This should give you the information you need to tell if the phone is rooted or not. At the top of the screen, it should read either S-Off, probably rooted or S-On, not rooted.

If you still can't do anything, try a different battery. Battery could be completely dead

Ok. thats a good thing. on google look up amon ra recovery. It says on google "[Recovery] [09-Feb-2011] RA-supersonic-v2.3 - xda-developers" go there and download the PC36IMG.zip file. you really need an sd card if you want this to work. put that file on the root of the sd card (not in any folders) and then go back into the bootloader. Then it will ask if you want to apply the update. using the volume key select yes. let me know when you have that done.

i got a little 1gig card for now and i loaded that file and used the volume down and power to turn the phone on but the only thing i see on the screen is

HBOOT

<VOL UP>......
<VOL DOWN>....
<POWER>....

FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
HBOOT USB

No mention of update

is this, PC36IMG RA 2.3.zip, the file you downloaded??? make sure that the file is named exactly PC36IMG.ZIP, make sure the .zip is not repeated.. remember that versions of windows hide file extensions so when you rename and it doesn't include the .zip, don't add that to the name... if it's named correctly and placed on the root of your sd card, it will be recognized and then update...

i made sure the file was correctly written. and it says something like PC36DIAG.ZIP

When i go to Recovery it boots to another menu

Android system recovery

-Reboot system now
-USB-MS toggle
-Backup / Restore
-Flash zip from sdcard
-Wipe
-Partition sdcard
-Mounts
-Other
-Power off

that's good, that's amon... imo, download this rom, [ROM][STOCK][Rooted] 4.53.651.1, place on the root of your sd card and go HERE, scroll down to "after rooting" section 1... those are detailed instructions on how to flash a rom... this will put your evo back to the stock rom but keep it's root...

And if you do actually want to fully unroot, there are instructions for it provided in the link above as well.

HOLY SMOKES!!!!!! IT WORKS!!!!!

Thanks to all who helped me out with this.....You dont know how happy i am and how happy my daughter will be....

do i need to update anything else from here?

nope if you flashed the rom linked earlier then that is the current updated rom. but the phone is rooted so there are endless things that you can do to the phone. so it will depend on what you want to do with it.

Good Morning,

I am now trying to UNROOT the phone so i can have it activated, but when i get to step 10 and go to recovery it takes me to that other menu with the black screen and green letters. It does not ask me if i want to update. Am i missing something?

You don't necessarily need to unroot the phone to activate the phone. Flash a stock GB rom and sprint will be able to activate the phone

I just wanted to completly UNROOT incase i needed sprint for something but if it is working the way it is now i will just leave it and get it activated.

Thank You Too Everyone who has been helping me out on this....

If you need to unroot, ocnbrze has some great info on what to do if you want to unroot in the Rooting Gingerbread thread

I went there and followedall the steps and dowloaded the file PC36IMG but the HBOOT is not seeing that file so i then go to recovery (black screen green leters) and i go to flash from sdcard and when i pick that file it gives me this message:

Build : RA-supersonic-v2.3

Install : PC36IMG.zip ?
Press Power To Confirm,
any other key to abort.

Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Installing update...
E:Can't find update script

Installation aborted.

Ok since you have nothing on the phone it makes it easer.go to htcevohacks.com and look for the tab on the top that says how to unroot the htc evo. Follow all of these steps. Then when your phone it back up and running go to system updates and then do the htc software update. There you go. Now you have a gingerbread unrooted evo!

Hello All, bought a Evo 4g that is rooted, today from an individual, went on sprint website to activate it and when I make a call there's a recording that says account cannot be validated. I went to a sprint store where they tried and was told they can't fix this because the phone is rooted, does anyone know of a solution or do I have to unroot the phone
