Root Fully Functioning Gingerbread ROM?

Now that the AOSP has been released for Gingerbread, when do you think there will be a fully functioning Gingerbread ROM for the OG Droid? I know there are some GB ROMs out there but they are missing crucial parts like Google Apps or GPS. Lemme know what you think.

Anybody alittle dissapointed we didn't get a xmas day suprise of gingerbread from one of the devs? I know they can't just whip it out like that, so evidentally GB must really hard to code for. Was Eclair an froyo this way when it was released to AOSP?

According to the developer of the Sourcery rom...apparently it is not stable or fast enough?

We know that Gingerbread is the talk of the town at this time, but our Magic comes from Froyo! Sourcery is designed from the ground up for ease of use, and stability. We are releasing what we believe is magically fast, and stable. Gingerbread, on the other hand, is not at this stage yet. We will continue to watch the status of Gingerbread, and when it is able to meet our standards of excellence we will port to it.

Actually, there aren't any STABLE Gingerbread roms for ANY phones right now, so don't be too surprised about the fact that we don't have one yet. Not even CyanogenMod has anything complete yet. They do have a source for the D1 that I saw in there Github this morning, but I'm not sure how far along it is. I've never made a rom from source, but am in the process of downloading the stuff for it at the moment. I don't know what I am doing with it, just want to learn. For now the best thing is to check out my GB Rebaked rom for fun and restore your back up when you need something stable.

Team Douche has CM 7 alpha running on a Nexus One. So technically, there is a GB ROM out there.

I would not consider an Alpha release of anything to be considered stable.

You should probably use it on a Nexus S before considering anything. The alpha/beta tags have never stoppped me from downloading a CM release. On another ROM, sure, but CM tends to do a good enough job with their stuff that it's at least usable.

Usable != stable. Otherwise, we would not be seeing this:

From Cyanogen's site:

Team Douch 2.PNG

From the Team Douche site:

Team Douche 1.PNG

Both sites show distinctions between what is considered stable and what is not.

It may be usable, it may work well 90% of the time, but that missing 10% does not qualify it as stable. no matter how you look at it.

Also, for more of an explanation as to why it is called Alpha (versus beta versus RTM) see Software testing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's called testing for a reason.

You also have to take into account that in order for a "stable" source rom to come out for D1 there really has to be drivers for GB released from motorola for the droid specifically. At least with those I would consider a rom "stable" and fully functioning. The only issue is I doubt GB will come to droid officially so we wont be seeing those drivers and thus whatever rom that comes out won't be 100% in my eyes.

Why couldn't the devs create the drivers?

I don't think this is quite accurate either.

First of all, just because the OS is a minor revision increment doesn't mean that you need all new drivers for the OS - it's quite possible that current drivers (as in those released with the latest official FRG83D release, aka 2.2.1) will work perfectly fine, with just a possible need to update a few lines in code to make it compatible with the current build (if that is even necessary).

If we wait on Motorola to release drivers, then there would not have been so many ROMs already built upon FRG83D 2 months before Motorola officially released the FRG83D ROM for VZW to push OTA last month. So, it makes no sense really, that we have to wait for new drivers from Motorola - at this point I'd suspect that Motorola is going to retire the DROID, if it hasn't already done so.

Strangely enough, motorola.com has the DROID listed as one of their mobile phones, but on the DROID home page it shows a link to upgrade it ot Android 2.1...no mention of Froyo whatsoever....

Why couldn't the devs create the drivers?

Or, at least, modify existing ones to work with the new OS...

Per BlackDroid on facebook:

"Going to be trying to start pushing out alpha and beta builds of The Ultimate Droid 3.0.0 (UD Gingerbread) today for at least 5 phones..."

So let the goodness begin! I'm backed up and ready to rock! :D

I have a week - I wonder if that is enough time to learn how to make ROMs from AOSP?

Now would be a good time since so many devs are focusing on newer devices, whereas I would focus on the DROID exclusively for another several months...

Where to start?

/me runs to find resources on building from source, including people to contact

Pick your poison. :) I can't really "help" much, but I am starting the process myself. If you're on gTalk, I'm on at my screenname.

Open source drivers usually don't work as well as the actual ones but I am sure it can be done. How well it can be done is a different story.

I agree with you on some points. I mispoke about motorola officially releasing the drivers. I meant that motorola would need to make the drivers but leaked drivers are as good as the real ones. I agree it is possible the old drivers could work for GB but 2.1 was pretty different from 2.2 and I do not know all the changes that were made so I don't know how much is actually different between GB and froyo.

All I am saying is that Motorola doesn't look like they are going to upgrade the D1 to GB and depending on how well the old drivers work I don't think it will be very soon til a GB rom is as good in terms of stability as some of those FROYO roms but this is strictly my opinion

That is true.

No, I can agree with you there - I think that Motorola is gonna drop the DROID from updates, probably after this latest one (but we might get lucky and have them release a final GB for the DROID and then call it quits).

At any rate, If building isn't too time consuming, I may do it myself.

@es0tericcha0s, es0tericcha0s AT google's mail? if so I just added you.

I dont know what really to say....the nexus 1 should have GB soon, and thats on OTA...I personally have been and am currently happy with the devs on the Droid...atleast they dont throw crap out there and then leave everybody hanging

There are a couple of Alpha builds that should be out soon. Keep an eye out over at DroidForums.net for Blackdroid's UltimateDroid rom and neubanks89 said he is going to try to have one up tonight. The goal is working accelerometer and USB, as well as the other stuff we already have working.
