I don't think this is quite accurate either.
First of all, just because the OS is a minor revision increment doesn't mean that you need all new drivers for the OS - it's quite possible that current drivers (as in those released with the latest official FRG83D release, aka 2.2.1) will work perfectly fine, with just a possible need to update a few lines in code to make it compatible with the current build (if that is even necessary).
If we wait on Motorola to release drivers, then there would not have been so many ROMs already built upon FRG83D 2 months before Motorola officially released the FRG83D ROM for VZW to push OTA last month. So, it makes no sense really, that we have to wait for new drivers from Motorola - at this point I'd suspect that Motorola is going to retire the DROID, if it hasn't already done so.
Strangely enough, motorola.com has the DROID listed as one of their mobile phones, but on the DROID home page it shows a link to upgrade it ot Android 2.1...no mention of Froyo whatsoever....
Or, at least, modify existing ones to work with the new OS...
