I'm both of those.
The one on the left when starting a road trip... The one on the right during the road trip.
I usually set my wallet up on the dash to cover the infernally-bright low fuel warning lamp, because it comes on more than 90 minutes before the need for fuel is critical.
Haha! The other day I set off to work with the low fuel warning light on, just to see if I could make the journey. I felt so smart when I arrived (slowly) at the petrol station near to the office, with the gauge on zero, only to discover that I'd left my bag at home, containing my work laptop, my phone and my wallet! I had to beg the cashier to let me have some fuel, which they very generously did. My wife then had to drive out and deliver all my stuff, and pay for the fuel
how trustworthy is that mile-left-to-go counter?
on my car.. i have run down to about 9 miles ... then it goes "---"
i guess i am on fumes... and i see a exit .. with no gas signs!
head to the next exit... hoping there is a gas sign!

Well my car lies about its fuel economy, so I'm inclined not to trust its range calculation either.

I live a dull life I guess. I've never played the gas gauge game. My wife, on the other hand, has the game down to a fine science. I rarely use her car without needing to going directly to the gas pumps.
I'm bad about that. I always mean to get gas but then figure I have a few more miles left...
