Root Future of Hotspot

Well, not sure if anyone else has heard, but Sprint is updating the Mobile Hotspot plan to be capped at 5G per month.

Anyone have any idea how this will impact people using hacked hotspots?
What about AOSP? Or wired tethering?

Just wondering what you guys are thinking about this, I suppose we won't really know until early october (when the 'update' is supposed to take effect).

Personally, I think it sucks. But I don't pay for the hotspot anyways. :/

I don't have the article right now, I read a site that had it on my phone earlier today. There were several in the google search. Seems to be coinciding with Apple's plan to announce iphone 5 for sprint (the next day). Damn.

well my thinking is that those who use the hotspot regularly may need to watch how much they are using or they could be charged for it.

Yeah ocn, probably right. I'm sure they'd catch on if I hotspot'd 30gb a month without having paying the $30 a month..

That being said, I periodically use the hotspot and will likely continue to do so.

how will sprint know if you are using wired tether or the hacked hotspot? or if all your usage is from watching blockbuster/netflix/tv videos?

sounds like they are moving to a tiered hotspot plan and the 5gb being the bottom plan. just a little speculation.

The article I had read said that the speculation was that after 5g would be $.05 per MB.

Also, I'm guessing they are able to analyze some of the traffic that goes across their network and are able to determine user agents. Or maybe they just notice trends like all of the sudden you are no longer brought to the mobile version by default... who really knows. not me.
