For those who haven't read it yet, T-Mobile has started to roll out the long anticipated firmware update for the G2. Go to T-Mobile's G2 forumn to read the specifics. Some people already report reciveing it. :p:D

Thanks goes to android central.
  1. Download the update from Google's servers here. Make sure it's named update.zip. Not update.zip.zip, or anything else but update.zip Check Google to see how to view file extensions for your computer operating system if necessary.
  2. Plug your G2 into your computer, and copy the update.zip to your SD card, making sure you don't put it inside a folder. Drop it right on the top level (root) of the card. Have a look here if you need further instruction about transferring files.
  3. Shut off your G2, and power back on while holding volume down. When you see the white screen, choose recovery and hit the power button. When you see the picture of the G2 with the red triangle, hold volume up and power to see your menu.
  4. From the menu, choose Apply sdcard:update.zip, and let it do it's thing.
  5. Enjoy your OTA, without waiting for the carrier.

Has anybody done this yet?? If so were there any performance changes?? I understand the WiFi tethering and calling is the main point of this OTA, just curious if there were any other improvements...

I've updated manually and I can say the WiFi calling works beautifully and also helps keep me up and running fine while at home. I only did the update about 5 hrs ago but so far everything is running smoothly. :o

the OTA broke my Angry Birds had to re-download and start over. other than that it has been a lot better as far as the data connection

I was so scared when i read this since i got the update this morning. luckily all my hard work is still saved.

i love that i am able to tether again. i'm glad the random shut off is going to be fixed now.

Things are so much better at home now. I can function without any dropped signals or inability to do anything with data. As soon as I walk in the house, the WiFi connection kicks in and puts me in WiFi calling mode which not only helps me make and receive calls, but makes data useage pretty much flawless. I am a VERY happy camper now. One of these days I may even try the Hotspot feature. :o

i attempted to wait for the updated, but i couldn't stand to wait another minute...
i am installing the manual update right now.

Could I use this to restore the phone to stock if I screw something up or have to send it back? I came from a behold 2 to this, and I wanna tweak it a little, but would like to have a copy of stock as a backup.
