Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

As per the various stories circulating yesterday that the LTE bug was mostly psychological, it seems that Verizon/Google's "fix" will mostly just be an adjustment to the reporting meter to make it more accurate:

Verizon Galaxy Nexus signal problem fix coming, meter being changed | The Verge

The title of that article is wrong and misleading. It says there is a "signal fix coming" in the title, but the article states "the radio firmware itself will remain unchanged, and Verizon says 'there is no issue with the performance of the device.'"

Ouch for me....And the others having reception issues...

Check out this awesome app I just found via Reddit: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.sudomakemeanapp.wifiqr&hl=en

The easiest way to have your friends and family connect to your WiFi network!
WiFi QR Share enables you to easily create WiFi QR code images. Your friends and family can scan these QR codes (with the app "Barcode Scanner") right off of your phone's display to let them join your network without having to type anything at all, no matter how long or complicated your password is.

I believe the point is that people like you having actual reception issues are in a small minority; the actual problem for most people is simply inaccurate reporting of signal.

AnandTech - Investigating the Galaxy Nexus LTE Signal Issue
AnandTech investigation finds Galaxy Nexus signal accurate | PhoneArena

"AnandTech is careful to mention that bars are effectively meaningless as a comparison metric, and they are careful to use the dBm ratings throughout. And, it's also more to prove that the bars are more of a psychological placebo than anything else. Even at one bar of LTE strength, you should still see the same speeds and quality of service."

What are you getting her?? All the guys in here seem to have a heck of a romantic streak from what I've read.

I've been after the spousal unit for a wish list since October.... told me she didn't want anything, so that's what I'm getting her..... NOTHING...

Well, that and an onxy & diamond Omega slide, a 3 stone ring and couple gift cards to her favorite spa & nail joints

But that's it, nothing else damn it.

What are some of everyone's favorite apps they can't live without? You all seem to have some of the coolest apps and I am always looking for ways to make my phone better.

I laughed when I read the last line. Couldn't help it

Aside from being able to play against computer controlled AI opponents, you can challenge a friend to a game over bluetooth or WiFi. Since you normally would find a table hockey game in a pub or bar, at least in Canada, this could make for another great drinking game to play with friends, as long as they are hockey fans. Of course you can always play the mini-games by yourself if no one wants to play with you.

I awwww'd out loud. Damn I hope one day to get gifts like that

Oh my goodness!! Hmmmm.....thinking......

Ok - what about a night out for her....either a movie or a show and dinner. All centered on her favorites.

This is a great idea.......we never go out...baby is too important and hard to leave with even family. I think this is the thang to do! Thanks BB!

Yep. I am disappointed in a similar way with 4g coverage, even though I have 3g everywhere I go. I am pretty sure battery life concerns are marginalizing our fringe/weak reception area coverage whether we are on the border of or have our 4g or 3g coverage obscured by buildings or something somewhere we frequent. I don't really agree with this, but that seems to be the deal. I tend to think we should be able to put our phones into a power hungry fringe radio mode if we want if there really is something going on where they are just giving up on holding a signal as it gets to some db threshold.

I think that, in my case anyway, the signal scare is more the reporting than anything else. I haven't dropped any calls or lost 4G except for this morning when everyone else was.

Condolences to you and your families (both work and personal).

Just to clarify,My family is fine.He was An NYPD Officer,we are all brothers. Its sad on many levels because he could have retired 2years ago with his pension kicking right in.Then I look at myself loving this job every day, thinking I could have retired 7 years ago at 43 years old.

My house is actually 3g only and about a good mile or two from even any random spots of LTE coverage on VZW's maps. So I frequent lots of areas that are very borderline 4g and have found that my wifes Charge holds the 4g signal better in such areas. Pretty sure hers burns more juice in the process also even though I have great 3g coverage through out.

This though makes me wonder if I should have just jumped ship as here in Dallas Fort Worth we have AT&T LTE and the coverage that is quite similar or maybe even a little better and when you don't have coverage you get MUCH more respectable speeds. And all this while using GSM/LTE single chip modems that are much more power efficient and maybe even reliable since they are related tech rather than two different worlds like CDMA and LTE.

Okay, whats next?

I got su.zip pushed, the custom recovery done. I have the SU app in my app drawer and now I am kind of lost what to do next?

I followed these instructions:
[HOW TO] Root the VZW Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE, Flash a Custom Recovery and Make a Backup

I keep reading something about renaming system/recovery-from-boot.p what is this about?

You can rename that file to .bak or you can delete it through root explorer. That will keep your recovery on a reboot

Again, not AT ALL true...All of this seems incredible fishy to me. VERY fishy. I do not have a defective device, I am pretty sure of it. I can go down the road 1000 feet in either direction and have full 4g coverage with an average speed test rating of 25 down and 15 up. I have 1 bar right this second in my own house @ -113dbm and get 4 down and .6 up. All of these reports and people saying its dbm that matters, I completely agree, but why is it that my 3g connection is at -107 and on my Droid X was always at -70 to -80? There is something wrong with the radio's. Personally, I think it is something like if you are not within a couple miles of a tower, your signal is just awful. I was told my tech support that I was RIGHT in between 2 towers, both being 3 miles away which could be why my reception is so bad and that as soon as I leave the development, it instantly gets better.

I still just can't buy the fact that everyone is saying there is nothing wrong with the radio, and people are just freaking out over the "bars". I don't give a *bleep* about bars, I just want to be able to take a phone call in my own damn house without it cutting out and dropping.

I think I got it figured out. I went into root explorer and changed the system/recovery-from-boot.p to -bak then installed rom manager (free) from market, had it reflash the recovery then did a nandroid backup :D
